One thing I love the most about Les twins as a dancer is the fact that they never settled with just being back ground dancers. When they performed for Beyonce it was Her featuring Les Twins. They took the dance scene to a whole new level.

Thank you for the dialog. I just have one example I'd like to highlight for the discussion. Laurent's recent Newart video. He balances on a small table?stool maybe? Holding his body parallel to the floor, legs moving upwards. I think core strength is important to being more creative. It makes sense that the stronger you are the better one can pull off different moves and hold for as many BPM. I'd enjoy any comments about that.

In French pronounce like LaRee with the R being a a sound from the back of your throat and not formed from your lips and LowRen same guttural R and with the N just being a nasal sound and the T being silent. But they don’t care how you say their names, probably, unless you are French! (The French care about their language far more than Americans value English.)

One beautiful thing I love about the twins is how they support each other, hype for each other and appreciate each other...imoresseach other... Larry will scream for Laurent when he makes a crazy move, Laurent will scream for Larry when he makes a crazy move 😆, especially the way Larry will b jumping, sometimes you might wonder what he is jumping for, but when you know muscicality you will understand why he scream... Above all, they love each other deeply which keeps them progressing each yr..

Ha! The workshops have some of the best surprises I’ve seen from Les Twins. Some favorites of mine are the San Francisco and the LA workshops in 2017 when they knew that they had won the premier season of NBC’s World of Dance, but couldn’t and didn’t let on. The 2014 Vienna Workshop still entertains me. I have never seen Larry so full of himself or Laurent so patient until somewhere close to the end. There are great moments in many many of their workshops though. It’s a treat to watch a reaction from someone as knowledgeable as you are. I don’t understand the point of reactions from those who can’t see the elephantine differences between the two in dance and personality. One thing they share is the impact of French aesthetics and culture from about 15 years before the Fin de Siècle (the period at the end of the eighteen hundreds until now). To see them using the architecture of Paris to stage their video performances during the pandemic lockdown did not surprise me. I kno from Laurent’s occasional posts that he values the art and architecture surrounding Parisiennes. I also think about the the art nouveau influence so markedly seen in the ironworks found in the metro entrances, various buildings and the Eiffel Tower when I see their black-clothed silhouettes. The last dancer who had a strong connection with his audience and mesmerizing innovation was Nijinsky who was a dancer and choreography from Ukraine (Russian Empire) and was trained at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg. He joined the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo in 1909 becoming its star male dancer. The dance troupe took Paris by storm, and as a consequence riveted the international dance audience. I think we both have a pretty good idea who has stunned a global following and pushed the envelope of the very idea of dance in this century. Treasure every second that they give us. They clearly absorbed the history of France and added astonishing cultural references from many other regions throughout the world plus modern lifestyle and media references in their art form. We are watching a once in a lifetime phenomenon in the art world, not just dance. Of course they are not always perfect dancers, but the magic of Les Twins’ poetry and passion and ability to connect with the viewer is undeniable. (Ahem! You are not the first to remark on Laurent’s death drops, but they vary considerably in different performances, in several ways depending on the context of the origin, the choice the following movement, the spread of his feet, the weight on one leg upon occasion and the tempo of the music. (I’ve seen him rise from it comparatively slowly even in the last year. That’s hard to do!) I would love to see you join Criminalz Crew! Your personality would fit right in. They are such great people.

The Twins have been dancing since they were literally 2 years old, and NEVER stopped dancing since! Just over 32 years old and they already have over 30 years under the belt. That’s probably 2-3X the dance experience of their peers.

    • @78SR

And dancing together! They were so aware of their own and the other’s movements since birth and seemed to be immersed in the idea of dance as they journeyed through life. That’s why we all watch them do something as simple as walk down the street with great fascination. They are kings of motion and gesture. I don’t think they ever had normal growing pains about whether they looked stupid. Imagine growing up with so much confidence in your body.

I just watched this for a second time. You are so much more articulate than most on this subject. I am old. The advantage of being old is that I am very much aware of the passage of time in the arts. I grew up always looking for art. I danced for 12 years (ballet and character dancing) until I noticed that my tendons had no intention of cooperating with my ideas. I read constantly and could not stop drawing. I’m a painter, who is steeped in art history and curiosity about cultures throughout the world. Les Twins seem to me to have brought something to the art world that has been missing in all of the arts with their creative energy and humanity. Their entire lives have been about the quest for art, particularly Laurent. Larry is somewhat limited by the injury to his back, suffered years ago from not wearing his seatbelt on a plane during turbulence. Lately he has been exploring more n his dancing and it’s a nice surprise. And Laurent continues his pursuit of expression as always. I keep wondering about their internal voices and everything they have sacrificed (normal lives) fto be able to feed their genius. The Derulo tour has been fascinating to watch as you can see and feel Laurent and Larry tinkering with more and more ideas as the show has grown to be much more a statement of art since it’s inception. That Les Twins love to create is clearer than ever. I doubt very much that they will ever stop working and critiquing the direction of the dance concepts that come to them in everything they do. I can’t help but see them as persistentl’y involved in creating art throughout their entire lives, much like Matisse and Picasso. I agree with you that the battles are perhaps the least interesting part of their work, but the format of the battles has become it’s own thing and the crowds’ expectations help to keep the format from changing. Remember Les Twins’ storytelling work wasn’t well accepted as hip hop in the early days. It’s good that the Udats are trying to change the format. The storytelling in the current tour with the whole dance crew has been a hatching of innovation.

I'll say 1. The video was great, I like these videos, I wish you would at the end do what you did as in breaking shit down, and analyzing it. It teaches me, and I like that more than just you watching a vid as a reaction.
    2. They are my favorite dancers, because they changed everything in the game. They blurred the line for what "hip hop" is. And for what they endured to get to where they are today.
In their 2019 Camden workshop interview, they said their first battle was a set up and when they arrived they were jumped and in their words "destroyed". They said they had to walk home naked, and when they got home their mom was "actually happy it happened". They were rejected HARD by the community but now they are JD judges and partners. And still to this day the biggest name in dance, combining the battle world and mainstream like no one ever has before.
Larry in an interview with Kapela on IG live talked about how in 2008 and 2009 JD they earned so much respect that before the 2010 JD prelims that people were asking for autographs, pictures and begging them to come to their school. Larry said after the prelim they were boo'd off stage by everyone in the room. So they left to Japan because they felt betrayed.
    3. Really any workshop is good
