I broke up with a guy because I couldn’t get past the fact that he was 38, Black, born in the US, and didn’t know who Nina Simone was.. & he claimed he knew music. 🥴 But this one was a HUGE one for me. And no I don’t regret it. She’s a whole LEGEND.

Alot of men... if they do not want to eff a woman they do not want to bother listening to said woman's music....furthermore some men just hate women and do not listen to any woman artists at all.

@@thehoneyeffect YES that part!! Now that you mention it, I’m realizing that he didn’t listen to any women at all! All he listened to was Hip Hop and had never listened to a full body of work (so not even deep album cuts, just the singles so occasionally a woman is singing the hook but that’s it). So his taste in music was questionable to begin with. But to your point, he never intentionally sought out records by women, which says A LOT. I def don’t regret my decision. Lol

I love this explanation or analysis of her stance in the art she created. It makes me think of recent pop culture RnB bickerings about who personifies or is qualified to be 👑 of RnB, or a "real" singer. I certainly didnt live IN black culture, but growing up in 90s, it was hard to not have a perspective on really what that meant for certain artists rising to the top of charts & crossing over to really become international stars, even more than qualified as their voice may be. I like that you point out there not necessarily anything wrong with having a stage persona, cause that is sometimes a freedom of art & expression in itself, but as it's trending to re-share videos or contort other ⭐️🎙 opinions like 'Whitney was classy', true singer... compare to Beyonce, it makes me think that before Bobby, & even during her interviews post marriage, her white audience loved her for coming from Gospel, singing true love songs, and I can't help but think her, even The Boss are examples of reaching an audience for sticking to a genre & rarely adding controversy to their image on stage or brand. I never thought either of them, or a lot of singers in 70s-90s shied from who they were, as I fanned out like all teenagers for records, old interviews, magazine clippings & that shaped my view on activism, too- to hear someone snap back at Barbara Walters etc...
The timing is of essence, too. In 80s, 90s it was progressive & liberal to want everyone treated the same, as long as it didn't infringe on white people's comfort. So, I think my mom or dad weren't so radical to share Nina Simone or other poets in our home because there was a sense in that world that white supremacy was gone or a non threat to the whole country. These times, as you said it are what more comparable to 60s-70s *need* for activism & a line drawn. I hope banning books inspires younger gens to read more. Teenagers don't want anything more than what they're not allowed to have. At least there are still songs & art. Context like you give, Amanda is such a powerful link cause I think a lot about how/why things get misunderstood

She was a socialist. Number one reason why other artist won’t “show up” the way she did. She and Paul Robinson are very rare celebrities.

    Love Nina
I love and am inspired by a rebel...
Sometimes even by a devils advocate who just challenges things that are accepted.
The level of exposure that comes from being yourself in the public eye sounds terrifying to me though. Can't escape from a facade.
