I've been trying to respond to comments more often lately actually! I mostly read comments on my phone while I'm out of the house though, which makes commenting on them sort of clumsy. When I'm at home I spend most of my time recording or working on other channel stuff, but I'm going to keep trying to improve my audience interaction.
I like how Nothernlion can plaster his face to mostly anything on the thumbnail.
This game has given me the biggest feeling of accomplishment I have ever experienced. Nothing can do it laik dis. >:3
Tell me about it :") When you reach over 60 seconds of the last level the nyou lose then they show you that scene of all levels with the music, I almost fapped :"O
ehsanjames32 actually, the screen turns white and you can't die for like 4 seconds cuz no obsticales appear on the screen when you get to after 60s in hyper hexagon
Ilija The Ja Nope, when you finish the sixth level they play you a long scene of all levels, I did it twice, once on my phone and once on my ipad.
ehsanjames32 hm, maybe it's different on android idk
Ilija The Ja once you beat it for the first time that happens
this is the art of minimalist gaming: it's simple, beautiful, and solid in its gameplay.
Terry Cavanagh is a genius, not just in the brilliant game design, but in picking Chipzel's music for the soundtrack.
Super Hexagon... isn't a puzzle game.
I doubt that it's a racing game either
It is a Dutch game
Yes he did. He always says "we". I like it. Makes me feel closer to him, you know?
This is the video that introduced me to Northern. Crazy to think this was 7 years ago
I would like to point out, A) I would call this action/arcade, not puzzle B) there IS a flash game on kongregate, just called hexagon, it is produced by same dev, and it is slightly easier.
I find that putting your consciousness on the back-burner actually helps, in my opinion
Hexagon: 109:02
Hexagoner: 84:41
Hexagonest: 75:14
Hyper Hexagon: 69:16
Hyper Hexagoner: 64:39
Hyper Hexagonest: 67:37
.....Im pretty happy that i played and completed it =)))
Man I beat all of those scores by atleast 100 secs. Please don't try to show off.
***** Pretty ironic
Thought that way too
not too great, but:
Hexagon: 358.52
Hexagoner: 82.43
Hexagonest: 63.48
Hyper Hexagon: 118.55
Hyper Hexagoner: 100.00 (I am proud of the perfectness of this score.)
Hper Hexagonest: 88.42
This has probably already been said, but you're actually right both when you say the levels are random, and that they are preset. The levels are built up from a variety of different patterns. Some patterns are exclusive to certain difficulties, while others are exclusive to certain stages within a difficulty.
Beyond that the levels also have preset patterns they follow in terms of when they deploy the patterns. Hexagoner is random solo pieces until 5 seconds, where it will always use a pattern.
Love the music in the game, reminds me of the good old c64 days.
Each level has 6 "tracks" (as I like to call them) that each have a set pattern
For me this was one of the most enjoyable Let's Look At recently. Props for being able to remain semi-coherent during most of that.
Thanks for the preview NL, picking this game up later tonight now!
So much for hearing the awesome soundtrack.
Imagine playing.... this... while talking about it non-stop! Ryan, honestly, I am impressed with your ability to deliver an amusing product while playing games like these.
Just bought this and it is insanely fun! Thanks for sharing it~
This freaking thumbnails get better and better.
No. Swag is either a noun meaning container of flowers or its a word used to express style, commonly used amongst teens.
RockLeeSmile's channel IS outstanding and he's a good friend of the channel. Check him out!
The levels are randomly generated from premade components. Also this is actually a online free flashgame on Terry's website :)
"Making you less likely to do well" is what "adding difficulty" means. If you play this game, you will get better. Take this from somebody who has actually played this game, it is really fun and really difficult.
holy moly my eyes @_@! Props to you Northernlion for being able to play this for so long. I feel sick just watching this.
15:48
"NOOO! ...Why did I become Aziz Ansari for a second?!"
That was fucking hilarious.
When she says Excelent, I feel like God loves me more than everything
I just realized that Northernlion broke 100,000 subscribers. Congrats on that, man.
Damn, your new thumbnails are lookin' good NL!
How to not suck at Super Hexagon:
1. turn off v-sync, you will experience a lot less input lag.
2. don't use a keyboard. some people like using a mouse, but I personally like using an xbox controller.
3. don't freak out, stay focused and don't give up.
4. if the adrenaline from the songs keeps you going, use that. some people like calm music to stay focused.
5. don't say you can't do it. you can. eventually, with enough practice, you can master this game. it's extremely repetitive.
Northernlion, I got this game just a week before you released this video. This is the only game that I play on my iPhone now
Love this game. Though one thing this video doesn't convey given the narration is how rewarding the music is - you get a few moments further and the music kicks into some new chord change and it just adds to the intensity and rush.
I think the levels are generated from a selection of waves of obstacles, like the Super Gravitron in VVVVVV, certain combinations of walls will always appear together.
14:56 "Let's try this one more time..." famous not last word from Northernlion!
The generation is like the binding of Isaac. The rooms are preset but the order they appear is random and some rooms are specific to certain levels.
That was the original, named 'Hexagon'. Super Hexagon offers more difficulties, another amazing song and has more different obstacles to overcome.
NL voice from 2012 hits different.
Btw, this game's music is by Chipzel, she's a musical genius :D
WOW, he made VVVVVV as well? Amazing.
There's an ending, Terry played to the end of Hyper Hexagonest, a video is out there somewhere, it's pretty freaking awesome.
I say that race against the singularity of a black hole is the perfect marketing idea. Also it sounds really fun.
What you cant really tell from the video is the fucking EPIC soundtrack.
You're pretty good at it then, it took me 3&1/2 hours to finally beat the first stage, and I'm amazing at these kinds of games. It's addicting.
"one more run and thats it." looks at video time, laughs
I love your content Northernlion and I do try to watch everything but a minute in and I can tell this is going to make me feel sick..
I left a like anyway and I'll probably still listen to see if there's any banter or 'The Northernlion Stories'
Oh yes. Boy have I been waiting for this one.
"the point is to give you epilepsy" -northernlion
This game is brilliant. Simple but divine personified. Terry Cavanaugh, you're an effing genius.
p.s., each of the levels has a certain set of patterns it can present,
but the sequence of those patterns is indeed random.
Picked this up on the steam winter sale for 30 cents last week. Great buy.
So Terry took the idea of "doing things the hard way" from VVVVVV and made a whole game with it.
My nightmares have truly come to form.
I love games like this, they're great time-wasters (in a good way of course)! The last game that had this same kind of "one last run" attraction was "The Impossible Game." Stayed up until 6:00 A.M. trying to beat the levels. Good times...
You've never spent much time with old NES/SNES action games..or even arcade games?
Trust me..this is true difficulty..everything can be done..things just require you to be able to keep up a steady flow of activity..and it slowly require you to get more and more precise.
I'm sure his smile is infectious too.
This game is fine tuned to mind find you as hard as possible.
First it determines rules and then it breaks them just to see your reactions.
lol... When he when into the first level I thought it was just a trippy loading screen XD
A good way to play this game is to start on the hardest levels then go to the easy ones so that way It will get easier and it can train you up.
I am genuinely amazed you managed to keep a consistent commentary during this. My brain turned to mush about three minutes in. Now I gotta go...not see colours. @.@
"The point of Super Hexagon is to give you Epilepsy." --NL
Watch the vid again and picture the hexagon in the center as the bottom of a hexagonal tube, have fun with 3D!
Lol he's mentioned her in almost all of his video since he moved to Vancouver. She played Nintendoland with him and you can hear her talk.
The levels are semi-random. Each level consists of a random assortment of set segments. (Much like a level in Isaac consists of a random assortment of set rooms.)
This game is like listening to a song, listening to nightcore, then going back to the first song.
I like this game because it is very original
Randomly generated, for the most part though, as the obstacles are not random but are randomly placed in your path.
You should try to organize a Super Hexagon competition between you, JSmith, Michael and RockLeeSmile
It was -90% off for 0,29 on Steam once - just a steal. Amazing game.
"Rhythm Maze Game."
I commend you for your ability in keeping a train of thought and forming coherent sentences while playing this seizure inducing game..
The ending of the game is truly awesome.
I have come to a conclusion after a really long time of watching Nothernlion, he makes being bald awesome.
Since it's only $2.00 on steam I'm buying it, this looks dangerously addicting the way I found Chime to be.
This reminds me of a really old game.. not sure why but it does.. looks a LOT like it in-fact..
Should really have a lets play of this, would be awesome to see you rage :P
Its best to start on the hexagonest stage when u first get this game. Going from fast to slow is way better then show to fast. Hexagon:94 Hexagoner: 165 Hexagonest:60
Hyper Hexagon: 74
Hyper Hexagoner: 121
Hyper Hexagonest: 33
I literally laugh when he was talking about fcing Jordan
It feels like it randomly chooses difficult phases determined by game difficulty, the chances of each phase is at random, but the set form of each phase i.e. back to back exit closing hexagon seem exists in every level but at different phase changes, rotation and speed.
Ryan...it blows my mind that you can play this AND do a commentary at the same time. O_o
Guys, there's a free demo of this on Kongregate if you want to try it out. Just type hexagon into the search bar and it's called "Hexagon". It should be the second choice that pops up, my best time on that is 47 seconds.
"Get out of there!"
If you actually Full Combo'd Jordan while on the phone with someone, you have my eternal respect.
Worth well more than 2 dollars which is the price. Totally worth it. I completely suggest getting it
Hexagon is what you are thinking of. Super Hexagon is improved
This is like hexagon havoc from Mario party, and i wanna be the guy made a baby, and super hexagon was the result.
Northernlion is now a hexagon.
It's simply not a puzzle game. It's a reflex game.
It's actually called "Impossible Super Hexagon"!
What I learned from this conversation is that Northenlion has finally gotten a phone :P
Ryan probably has the hand-eye coodination of God after playing SMB and this game.
After watching this video a second time, I have decided to bless it with my Like.
Swag, by definition, is a festoon. Swagger, also by definition, means arrogant with false pride.
One more time- The Northernlion story
the music seems to control the path. more fast paste music seems to cause more difficult scenarios
I love this got it on my ipod
I would love to be able to play this to the beat of my own music!
If just the normal (hard) mode is enough for you, its available for free under the name Hexagon.
for once im actually rooting for you to win NorthernLion
This really reminds me of The Impossible Game
Not at all. There are only a couple, very distinct skill sets at play, here. You see a pattern, figure out how to navigate it and execute with your fingers. Seeing becomes memorizing, figuring out becomes remembering and navigating becomes muscle memory as your skill increases, but the game doesn't end there. It has to ramp up, right? So it makes it more difficult to accurately recognize a pattern, the patterns become more difficult to learn, and you get less time to react. Perfectly fair.
The original Hexagon is playable on flash, it's a lot easier, but still presents a challenge.
Northerlion are you gonna do any lets plays with any of your friends, I haven't seen any in a long time.
This game might give you epilepsy, but that's kinda the point: The Northernlion Story
