Great review of the color set ups. The same colors, red and blue, were used in “Contempt” but also to symbolize the shared colors of the French and American flags.
Great video! Have you read on any of the Superman comparisons to this? Not sure if intentional, but the similarities are uncanny, and could offer another explanation to the colors/lighting in the film.
Thanks! I have seen the videos about Superman and it's definitely plausible. That's the great thing about films like this; they really make you think. Thanks for the view and comment!
i hate this fucking movie (not saying it's bad) i just hate it. it is so UNCOMFORTABLE to watch. and i can't explain why this film gives me anxiety? it feels like nails on a chalkboard i HATE it
This is a very interesting analysis but IMO this is a very over rated movie. I really don't think there's much more going on than meets the eye here. I think PTA likes to add quirky things to his movies knowing they can be interrupted in different ways just to make them move interesting. I'm not saying his is a bad movie but it's just not nearly as profound as so many people think. You can spend so much time looking for a deeper meaning, searching for clues, etc but at the end of the day there is nothing more to this story and characters than what is presented on screen.
I don't think it's fair to definitively say there's not much more going on here than meets the eye. Regardless of what the filmmaker intended, it's fun to analyze and explore films beyond the surface level. Something like this that can be endlessly dissected is kind of what the whole beauty of film is about.
Great video essay! Saw this movie yesterday and loved it. This is a criminally underrated film!

+Scott S It's been awhile since I've watched Contempt. I'll have to pay attention more next time. Thanks for the comment and view!
When he needs me plays in pop eye, olive oil is wearing clothes that are very similar to Lena's. Pop eye as a character is also super naturally strong

anyone know why Barry's tie changes from red to gold when he is on the plane, then back to red once he's in Hawaii?
because they couldn't find that tie when they were filming the scene

Agree, the film gives you such a weird feeling, which makes it so great.

Can’t be overrated if neither Chis nor Jeremy has ever reviewed it. It’s a hidden gem.
