    I liked this movie before already, but this video made me truly appreciate just how well made it is. It's almost bizarre in the end. This movie and Sandler's performance are so good, that it actually seems like some cruel joke on Sandler's part. Like, he made just to say "Yeah, I can actually be in nice things. Now, suffer more, as you watch my comedies!"

    My fiancé is super skeptical about my appreciation for this film because of Adam Sandler's presence but it really is something special. Paul Thomas Anderson couldn't make a bad movie even if he was half asleep in frog pajamas.

    Kudos. This was a great analysis. I just watched this movie for the first time, and I'm curious. I didn't see Barry only as an angry man with social anxiety. I actually viewed him as being on the autism spectrum and thought all the bursts of color, light, and sounds were meant to allow us to see the world around Barry in the way HE experiences it. I even thought the picky from his sisters and their cacophony of noise at the party was over the top so we could see how Barry felt it through enhanced sensory issues.
    Things like repressed anger, anxiety, being called "gay" or taunted disrespected by people/family, seeing colors, being awkward about sex/intimacy, being naïve about giving out personal information, being fearful of loud noises, strangers, and uncomfortable experiences, having a clumsy, unsteady walk/gait, longing for intimacy, having self issues and symptoms of depression, crying awkwardly/quickly and leaving a neurotypical person unaware of how to deal with it, being a loner, being meticulous and precise, dressing in a way that doesn't seem the social norm, fixating on things (like the pudding and flyer miles), even the harmonium itself (because often people on the spectrum have this 'connection' or natural rhythm with sound/music....ALL of that seems textbook autism spectrum (old school Asperger's). Am I the only one who saw it that way?

    If I’m not mistaken, Barry wears the same colour tie he saw Lena’s dress last. Like if Lena wears a purple dress, the next day Barry wears a purple tie.

    I had the same reaction after seeing MAGNOLIA...I read that P.T. Anderson was going to do a romantic comedy with Adam Sandler...I thought, No Way! After seeing it when it came out it was unbelievable, to me, how great of a film this is. More people need to see this work of cinematic art. Paul Thomas Anderson is the greatest living director of our time!

    I would love to hear your analysis on the scene in the beginning with the piano. Right before it was dropped off, Barry saw the delivery van crash and flip violently in the peace of the morning, only to then see it simply drop the package off. Also, I think Dean backed down to Barry cause he realized that the man was crazy as hell, because he drove 500 miles with the phone in his hand still!! Lol Ive never laughed so hard at a comedy with no blatant jokes

    Yeah I heard a theory that Lena is stalking Barry, thus the woman in the grocery store, and maybe that's happening but I think its ok to just look at the film as symbolic and not literal...

    I was sad to see that you left out the light that comes on in the phone booth when he finally reaches Lena. I also always assumed that (because of the presence of warped stimuli, unsuccessful social interactions, and violent fits of anger) that Barry suffered from Asperger's Syndrome. I guess you might consider this a fringe theory? But it wasn't ever a theory in my experience...I just assumed it.

  • @TheCyberwoman

    This is an amusingly positive analysis for a couple of reasons. The first, obviously because of its sharp contrast to your Happy Madison marathon. I know you mentioned several times that you were using it to promote a better film, but it's still a sharp contrast. I listened to hours of horrible Sandler, and even watched The Do Over to your commentary...so it's some what stark compared to this. The second is your recent discussion of relationships/sexual relationships in word funk. I don't think you as a cynic. I also don't think of you as someone who puts much stock in romantic messages. I know you specifically said the film posits, but it's still weird to hear you say it's "worth the effort" in such a factual tone. You seem so happily and productively single, it makes the analysis jarring. Still good though, makes me regret having overlooked this film. Can you believe I've now watched The Do Over without seeing Punch Drunk Love? I always enjoy your work, from the educational to the silly.

    The love was great for Barry, but what was in it for Lena? She seemed to serve no purpose except to provide Barry love. I did not get what Lena saw in him that made her want him as a date. I am guessing that was intentional.

    • @harrizburhan
      @harrizburhan Год назад

      My take is that she thought that barry was someone who's happy to have such a big family with 7 sisters and all. Lena is the opposite after all, she has no siblings and tries to emphatise with barry but soon learns that barry is someone who is really vulnerable and hard to open up to people. He slowly open up himself to lena and there's a certain charm to that

    I'm glad to see this film brings people a lot of joy. But films like this do little for me - the symbolism is too fussy, too schematic in design. The shot composition and colour schemes are very Film-School-in-a-box. The film comes alive in moments of well-observed behaviour but when I watch it I just want it to be less self-consciously artsy and let the characters breathe from under the overly mannered fittings. Philip Seymour Hoffman gives a wonderfully sleazy performance that I would have loved to see developed more. The stuff with the sisters is interesting too but is touched on rather than dived into. PTA has become a much better director since this film as his technique has become far less heavy-handed.
