If there's one football boot trend that I wish would catch on, it's AG stud patterns. With how common it is to play on artificial grass these days, there is a huge lack of availability, and even awareness of AG specific football boots. If safety and reducing your own risk of injury is important to you, you should definitely get some AG boots.
With that in mind, in today's video we'll take a closer look at the AG-Pro versions of the Nike Mercurial Vapor 14 Elite and Phantom GT 2 Elite. Two stud patterns designed specifically for use on artificial grass, but two stud patterns that are also very different from each other. I go over what the differences are and which of these two layout would be best for you. Which AG-Pro Nike stud pattern do you like best?

Honestly Jackson, one of my favorite stud patterns is the Magista Obra. Used it on both artificial and regular grass. I feel like the GT is very similar to that.

AG-Pro Mercurial 13 have the best studs ever created for an AG boot (The one you mentioned used by Neymar when he was with Nike). Thanks for the informative video, Josh!
fully agree with you mate. the versatility you get from the Vapor 13’s AG-pro was great + it looked like something actually worth the price tag, for both the Vapor and Superfly models
Watching the Canada vs Mexico game on that horrible turf field was very interesting. I noticed that the majority of players were still wearing the fg versions of their boots. I find this crazy considering these are professional athletes playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world. You would think the clubs and management would be more strict about what boots they wear.
Finally, a new Joma Champion.
I immediately thought the same thing when I first saw this colorway. Total Joma Champion rip-offs! 😆
I have worn both and mercurial’s ag pro is so much better in term of not getting stuck while also more grippy actually, as far as you are playing on the ag surface. So good
Great video jimmy, could you review the academy models in their ag variation? They look to have the same stud layout but seem like they'd feel very different from the top end models

I don´t think AG on natural grass is so terrible. If the ground is firm, you can play with AG with no problem. 10 times AG on FG rather than the other way around. The MG from Puma truly works on either. Yes, it isn´t the best performer, but works really nice.

I don’t recommend using the AG-Pro stud pattern on fg long term from a durability standpoint. Those hollow studs are quite short and if the fg pitch is dry they will wear down quickly due to the hollow shape.
I’ve used my GT AG pro on both ag and harder fg fields and they are holding up great 👍🏼

@@jaystevens8811 good question. How long is a season these days? I only play pick up these days (I’m old now), about 2hrs twice a week. I do rotate boots but it’s hard to say how many hours I’ve put in. They are usually my go to pair since we play a lot on turf and fields in SoCal are usually hard. The studs are starting to wear down though now. Maybe like a season to season and a half’s worth?
@@GoodWillRacing decent same as FG then mine are ruined after a season an half. Studs wear down. They’ve ripped so same sorta distance I’m gonna grab a pair this season 👊🏼

I have these phantom boots in AG, df version too. Play mostly on natural ground but sometimes on AG fields. Love the boots. Love how the soleplate is nice on harder natural ground surfaces (helps avoid ankle rolling). Saw the reviews on the newer phantoms gx, not as convinced because I heard the soleplate is super flexible! Like to have a boot a bit more responsive

If more studs is better to spread the pressure I'd love to know what you think of the Puma MG boots.
Also, your take on how AG boots compare to AG trainers (boots didn't exist in my day). I've tried both in later life (50+) and I think I still prefer the trainers...... But that could just be me.

I have a different AG pattern from the Nike GT. They have about 20 studs on them. They might be called MG.
I wish the speed flow ag had the carbon insert. Really what pushes that boot over the rest for me

My 8yr old has tiempo legend 9 academy boots for play on natural grass. I'm not buying him AG specific boots. Should he wear his tiempos for an upcoming camp or just regular athletic shoes?
Wear them, he will be fine. FG Tiempos have rounded studs anyway.

The rubber AG-specific studs are terrible durability (Nike Tiempo legend 9 Elite AG-PRO). They're already breaking after ONE use on AG. The hollow plastic "FG/AG" studs were much more durable and never had an issue wearing down. I honestly think the whole Nike soccer cleat brand needs a serious overhaul on quality control and manufacturing durability. I refuse to buy any more soccer cleats from them until they start making them more durable.
Like much more the ag pro than the new ag nike has released...
