All the following states have an a,lung higher than California in order to be charged with a felony. In Massachusetts and Nevada, the threshold is $1,200. Ten more states, Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Rhode Island, and Utah, set their threshold at $1,500. Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina all have a theft threshold of $2,000. The highest threshold, $2,500, is found in Texas and Wisconsin.

My daughter was a freshman in college where she was a passenger in a car and was taken to jail for lying about her age to get into a club where her friends were playing in a band. This was in Provo, Utah. She ended up with a misdemeanor B on her record. She had to jump through hoops to get into grad school and that record almost prevented her from being accepted. Years later, she and her husband were traveling the world for 6 months and she couldn't get into Australia due to a "crime" when she was 18 years old, had a graduate degree and was a working professional. These records have impacts the rest of us don't realize. A felony will stop people like these girls from being able to turn their lives around if they decide to try to do so. I would like to see a path, a way for them to wipe their record clean if they, for example, get a college degree and have no more crimes.

I agree. A felony for petty crime is a dangerous precedent, but no doubt heavily lobbied by the prison industrial complex. I could see heavy fines, even some jail time for repeat offenders, but felony? And this new law makes illegal drug use a felony, too. We went from way too lax on shoplifters to over the top. Our country seems to be divided into two awful choices until we pick the one the corporate lobbies like best. Not a coincidence. People don’t learn.

When you mentioned the prison system, yeah, I think privatizing prisons was one of the biggest mistakes in any efforts to manage crime and create a better society. Realizing they are now part of that system made my stomach turn because they are now profitable to that system. OMG.

Because the limit for theft to be considered a felony needed to be adjusted for inflation and the incarcerated population needed to be reduced. That was way back in 2014, but something new started happening during the pandemic. Organized retail theft became more common and selling stolen goods was made easier by social media. Therefore laws need to be changed again to keep up with changing times. I think as citizens of the US you should know these things.
