  • How to trim your brass cheap and fast when making ammo. I find the worst part of reloading is the brass prep and especially the trimming but here are two cheap and fairly quick ways to trim your brass as long as your chamber and/or cartridge doesn't require an odd trim length.

    My dad used to use mount a drill to his bench with a large hose clamp and a couple of block of wood and use the old lee trimmer. He also had some arbors that held the deburring tools that went in the drill as well. I just splurged for the RCBS electric pro trimmer. takes a couple of minutes to set up but goes real fast trimming and deburring at the same time.

    Thanks for the demos and efforts.I really love crafting accurate and consistent bolt action hand loads. And to achieve them, I keep it simple and compartmentalized. Simple=repeatable.Repeatable=accurate. I don't need adjustability. I need whatever I do to be the exact same every time and so I use the older Lee case trimmer and when I have my barrel reamers made, I have them made ~.010in more than this tool's trim length. Perfect every time and I only have to trim every 4th reload. I have an expensive trimmer and it stays in the box...

    Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I like the Hand Press method. I wonder about consistency and accuracy of the quick trim though. Lots of wiggly parts. I guess I'm going to find out. A little on the expensive side if you're trimming multiple calibers. The dies are about $12 each. But hell, it's only money.

    I have the trim-it II, which was the same concept, but I quickly found I did not like it. So now it sits in a drawer. I like the old hand crank, and like the idea of this new add on from Lee, but another Con you might want to mention is you can't use it on a progressive press. Other than that, it's a good tool and will shop around for one and Try it out

    I really like all Lee Precision reloading gear except just two things. One is the measure scale so I use an RCBS scale. The other is the case trimmers so I use a Lyman Universal Case Trimmer with pilots. I really like all my other Lee reloading gear and it does a great job from the turret press to the dies to the tools to the Lee LoadAll shotgun loader.

    • @David_Quinn_Photography

      is the Lyman the best to use for a new comer whos reloading one caliber?

    • @rbm6184
      @rbm6184 9 месяцев назад

      @@David_Quinn_Photography If you only plan on loading one caliber you can take a look at the Lee Loader kits that are one caliber kits. However they do not have case trimmers so you may need to get a Lee Precision Cutter and Lock Stud if they don't have a case trimming feature. Also these kits do not full length resize the case. So for rifle cartridges they only neck size and if you do not use carbide dies you will need to lube your brass cases. These kits are meant for brass that has been fired in your specific gun's chamber and no other.
      My advice is to get a LEE VALUE TURRET PRESS KIT. It is cheap and the best value and if you choose to load other calibers down the road you can get more dies and even go auto prime if you want. The turret is better than having to constantly switch dies on a single stage press. Its only $169.99. Or get a LEE BREECH LOCK 50TH ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGER KIT for $151.99 that is a single stage press. I do not recommend the hand press kit but you could go that way if you don't mind it being more labor intensive. Whichever kit you get you will still need caliber specific dies. Also Lee products come with complete instructions on loading with the tools and their die sets also include some load data for the caliber. You will need the die set and a kinetic bullet puller and a good set of analog dial calipers no matter which kit you get.
      Since this post six years ago I do have Lee case trimming tools now both the Deluxe Quick Trim and the Lee Precision Cutter and Lock Stud and am satisfied with them. The Lee powder scales are not bad either its just that I prefer other scales. Best of luck.

    I use steel wool around 00 to 000 grade fine to chamfer the inside and outside of the case mouths. Very carefully you can do it without cutting yourself. I find it quicker than the chamfer tool, but I use it too depending on what brass I'm working with.

    Thanks for the video, Deuce. Where's the ball bearing from your Quick Trim? The bearing rests between the spring and the housing. Don't you need to transfer it over to your Power Quick Trim so you don't wear out the spring grinding it against the housing? I've seen this on other videos. I own each one and it seems to make sense.

    for about the same price as a lee quick trim die + power adapter, you can just buy a CTS case trimmer for use in a drill/drill press. its literally just a chamber (spaces off the shoulder like a chamber) with an end mill. the end mill is completely adjustable, so you can make it as long or short as you want. super accurate, and VERY clean cuts. assuming that the cutters EVER wore out, you can just buy a new end mill for a few dollars.

    I found that I had to pull the die out of the press every ten rounds or less to dump shavings. Problem is not all of the shavings fall out of the die during trimming which slowly (or quickly if you trimmed a really long case) increases the gap between the cutter and the case mouth, so my case length creeps up. Pretty obnoxious, even with LnL bushings. I plan to go this route ruclips.net/video/bGuUHmODi3o/видео.html .
    The original lee trimmer had it right, gauge pins just work. I'm currently doing this with a power drill mounted in my vise run sideways like a lathe at low speed, works great and no shavings can build up. The shell holder is still a problem, one I plan to correct with a 1/4" t-handle or stubby driver to grasp it. In the meanwhile, mounting the shell holder in the magnetic bit holder for my drill gives my hand something to hold on to and wearing gloves helps with getting more traction on the knurling. It would be a rather simple modification to drill and tap a short threaded rod into the side of the shell holder which should solve the leverage problem for good. That's the plan. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    The "brass catcher" that you're supposed to slide in over the shell holder, catches almost none of the shaved brass.

  • @p47rr
    @p47rr Год назад

    Every twenty five rounds. You should use a air compressor to blow out brass shavings into something. I use a card board box. Make sure to blow out the right end. You don’t want oil where the case is held. If you don’t blow out the shavings. The case will start spinning. Wear safety glasses. One mistake I made was to hold the drill all the way down first. Then run the press ram into the cutter. Bent both blades. Wasn’t thinking. I purchased a black & Decker hybrid cordless screwdriver/drill. It folds or is straight. Make sure to wipe the case holder with your finger each time. One chip of brass will cause you to trim the brass to long.

    You didn't mention that the trimmer pins wear down and shorten trim length so you have to buy a new one after a few hundred trims. Also, the trimmer pins will eventually wear a hole in the backing plate also shortening the case too much.

    I am new to rifle ammo loading. Only done handgun. When trimming the brass how do you determine the size you want it to be trimmed to?

    • @thewatcher611
      @thewatcher611 3 года назад +1

      Load data will tell you. After you decap and resize, you'll trim it to length. I have the less expensive ones he showed here. They are already set to trim to the proper length, provided you use them as intended. I put mine in a proper tightening drill chuck, and i can polish the case with steel wool, or a 3m pad if needed, trim, chamfer, deburr, all of that with it in the chuck. Dont take it out like he does to chamfer and deburr. Dont use a weak elec. screwdriver either. Get a real drill, with a real chuck. The thing I don't like about the lee cutter is the chuck is not a quick change type, like on the quick trim.... Always consult load data.

    The case length gauge pin is "cartridge" specific, not "caliber". I know that is nit-picking, but there is a difference between the two. Also, the Lee 3-jaw chuck is the answer to the case-holder challenge.

    Different metals cause crossthreading

  • @dumbcough
    @dumbcough 11 месяцев назад

    Sorry,but you should never take a file to the end of the length gauge to adjust the cut.The thread that goes into the cutter side is not a standard thread it is made tight(there are different classes of threads),so that you will be able to adjust to either make the case longer or shorter.Which means that a vise or someother tool will have to be used to hold the length gauge to turn in or out thus adjusting the length.Turning it in will make it smaller, and out to make it longer.Filing the end will only make the tool no good as there will be no adjustment.

    Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice
    this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ
    who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins
    and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that
    you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you
    are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to
    wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the
    Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from
    the inside out.
    Look for signs that you are saved. Things like
    spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a
    craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are
    known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then
    keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew
    chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!!
