I was raised Catholic but left the faith because of those judgemental, scornful, people. I got so tired of seeing the women - with whom I'd sat in church! - badmouthing anyone who'd failed to attend that week. I went to several churches and found nothing but hypocrisy and judgment at every single one. Church, turned me away from church. With that said, I have met a handful of genuinely good Christians in my time - my mother is one of them and she raised me to always ask questions and temper faith with love and reason. She, a deeply spiritual Catholic woman, taught me to question the bible, the church, and god - not in theory, but directly. Her questioning has allowed her to accept the falts of the church and maintain her faith, mine led me to agnosticism.
That's what I've always said. The church has been what is causing the huge decline in followers over the last 30 years. Not evolution being taught, or gay marriage or the internet, they may have helped but had the church actually.folloaed.the word Jesus spoke, we would have WAY more Christians.
@@JS-po8oc The problem with the Church is it is run by humans...and humans are inherently flawed creatures. @@batorsagandszerelem4474 Did you reply to the wrong person by chance? I'm talking about why people are leaving the church, not a out why you should join it.
I'm Catholic and the reason I stayed with the religion, despite what people say, is how I was raised. I was never forced to go to church every Sunday and believe every word the Bible says. I'm glad my parents never forced anything on me, it made me develop my own faith. :)
@@JS-po8oc It's kinda like instead of just all those outside things opening the door and showing people they can walk out, organized religion has also set the house on fire.
I just don’t understand how Catholic priests say, “love thy neighbor as thyself” then continue to reject their neighbor, and still try to stand on the moral pedestal... 🤔
Though to be completely fair in this instance - and I'm trying to read things in the most charitable light here - it's entirely possible to separate the value from the person; i.e. a single value does not make up a person's entire identity. Just as we don't always agree with our friends' life choices and thus not actively support them in what we think is a mistake, it is entirely possible for religious people to disagree with this one aspect of a person and still treat them decently and even get along through the many other values they share (e.g. it's entirely possible for a Christian priest to get along with a New Age neo-pagan even though their religious views are mutually incompatible). Also, there is a difference between not actively supporting someone in one aspect of life and deliberately seeking to harm and/or undermine them.
Could it be because the catholic church is an institution that is, and has been since it's creation, merely using religion to create a power base for itself, with no real concern for ideals nor morals?

mao zedong did nothing wrong !!! (if you ask the chines government) chines government: by the way don't look at the LITERAL mountain of corpses we kind of made, upsi !!
my problem with the catholic church among a ton of other things is this: you've got like the 10 commandments right, they're pretty big, explicit rules. And not committing adultery is one, honoring your parents is another. Thing is, the church does not treat adulterers like this. It doesn't say, don't associate with them, don't support them.. and they're breaking A COMMANDMENT. So the degree to which the church does not support LGTBQ+ says this is more of a puritanical culture reason, than a purely religious one.
The church should be condemning adultury, sex outside of marriage, excessive drinking, pornogrophy also. They shouldn't lift up people who act contrary to the bible into leadership not because they're bad people but because leaders are called to a higher standard. Christians should hold each other accountable in all areas of life and not just pick hot button topics that make it easier to hide their flaws. I believe homosexuality is incompatible with the christian religion but I also don't care what you do as long as you stay out of my face. There's much more important things to talk about.
@Ryan Sheridan I think what ianericson is saying is that it seems the catholic church has a bigger agenda against gays than the many groups of people that openly break the specific ten commandments such as people who engage in premarital sex, so the persecution of gays seems unfair by comparison.
Kendre Brooke Kendre Brooke yeah because anti-adultery, anti-fornication, prohibition, anti-pornography campaigns , laws, and public condemnation has never come from the Catholic Church. We should feel fortunate that they *aren’t* as powerful and vocal as they used to be.
As a gay catholic, it’s been a time. Middle school priest told me I was a sinner and would always be separated from God’s love for who I was, high school priest told me I would help bring truth and justice to the world for who I was. I'm probably one of the people he talking about but I'm not going anywhere. I like to know what people are saying on the other side. For the record, every Catholic and Christian I know (and that's a lot of people) is at least a little angry about the fact that Catholic priests have done what they did, and especially that many were and are known to the church and were not even excommunicated, let alone turned in. It's a very hot topic in Christian circles, and some people talk about firing every single Catholic priest and starting fresh without a view of celibacy

Catholic church/lgbt debate. I should preface this by mentioning that I am French. I believe culturally, that has an influence. The only priest I ever met and really got to know, I'll name him R, was only a few years older that I am. (way to destroy the old dusty stereotype) We met because we were both involved in a local theater group. It took me weeks to hear someone mention off hand he was even a member of the church. Flashforward to a few months later. The whole crew goes out for coffee and we're the last two to linger at the end. I take the opportunity to mention that I am pansexual and proud, and I ask him hat his view on this are. He told me that he believes that love is love and that as long as I am a truthful lover and I care for my partner, he supports me. So that was mind blown number one. Then he tells me. "My Boss agrees with me." (as in "Him") and then he says "my boss also agrees with me." Turns out... Our parish's priest identifies as gay. He says it's caused him some trouble during his learning and training (sorry if there are terms for that, I'm not familiar at all), but that he's found more love and support than he expected. He said he wasn't a virgin but had never known a woman's body and that having made the vows that he had he would never have "entanglements" again. He does not believe that it makes the question of his sexual orientation moot, however. He's active in several charities and supports them openly, including one that is devoted to providing emergency shelter and housing for kids and young adults kicked out of homes because they are lgbt. Thankfully, this is not as large a problem in France as it seems to be in the US (what the actual HELL parents??!) but it usually compounds with poverty and illegal immigrant status or refugee. Many of kids seeking that help come from neighboring countries. When I hear bigots say stupid shit, I think about him. I think about the member of the clergy that gave that powerful speech to (the senate?) a few years back. And there is hope.
Thanks for sharing your story. I’m a catholic but at this point I don’t like to mention it because I get severe back lash because of all the bad things that have happened within the Catholic community. I fully support the LGBTQ community and I do believe in science.
And that's is an exception not the rule .. its the same as the rest of humanity. But i'm glad that you had a nice interaction with a nice person. Yeah I'm not Catholic/Christian/Whatever but I did go to a Catholic grade school and then a Dominican high school. And that one time the mother did call me by name she immediately said “eww, that tasted bad in my mouth.” You saying that just reminded me of that. It sucks when people don’t respect you for whatever reason. Must suck even more when it’s your family tho.
@@emmargue675 I'll be honest, I thought that was normal. I mean, my dad said he was proud of me once when I was a kid and that was pretty great so I think I also don't relate to being shunned by family since I've never really cared about how some of them barely seeing me as human. But back to the original topic, the parents of my highschool sweetheart of now 4, almost 5, years have never called me by name(When they tell their church friends or family about me it's always "Her friend"), I also never thought it was weird that the present at christmas had no tag either. The dad barely looks at me when I shake his hand and the mom is still terrified at the thought of us getting married so I figured it was normal/expected lol
This is probably my favorite outro. My favourite intro was the one where he changed from the throat punch to emotional threat.😂 Oh Phil, please and thank you for keeping on being you!
As a Christian what I don't understand is how can you spread any hate towards anyone regardless of sexual orientation. John 4:8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. Pride month is about loving each other and there is nothing more heavenly than that.
In one regard, as another fellow Christian, I can see where you're coming from. Jesus himself was probably the most loving man to have walked the Earth, and his whole thing was about loving those that society had cast off and not dismissing them but instead loving them. His very point was to "seek and save" those who were lost. However, as a Christian who is more on the conservative side, Jesus also condemned that which was wrong. It's been used before, but when Jesus protected the woman caught in adultery, he said to them not to throw a stone unless they had been without sin. However, he didn't say to the women, "Oh yeah, and you can keep on adultering." No, he said, "Go and sin no more." If you view *anything* as a sin, whether it be homosexuality, killing animals, or using fossil fuels, then you cannot accept that behaviour regardless of how lovingly it's done. It doesn't mean you completely reject the person who does those things, but instead, it means that you reject that behaviour. And I know that the response is that a person's sexuality is part of who they are, but according to the Bible, that's not entirely true. A person's sexuality is to be done to glorify God (and to propagate the species). Paul frequently talks positively about those who an unmarried. Clearly to him, if in some ways it was preferable to be unmarried, then clearly, sexuality wasn't a deciding factor.
I applaud your willingness to cherry pick from your holy book in a way that makes you a better person, but you need to understand that your holy book is full of terrible atrocities, awful advice, and loads of hate speech. As I said, I'm glad that you are capable of ignoring the bullshit and only taking the good. While I think that it highlights why your religion is false, I wish more professed christians were like you. "Good people will do good things and bad people will do bad things, but it takes something like a religion to convince good people to do bad things." - Matt Dillahunty

Now if the Church had actual demi-gods or mystical wise men that teach cosmic truths, I might have some interest in joining.
But if it's just a bunch of old men in robes with lusts and vices and human idiosyncracies pretending to know the will of God...sorry but I can't put 100% of my faith and trust in all that.
Scott Wilhelms but a smoker isn’t proud of being a smoker, whereas these catholic priests seem to take a lot of pride in their status.
Emperor Palpatine also valid!
@Emperor Palpatine This is a bald face lie.

@@Kleoath Oh man that surely won't be surreal and bittersweet for them at all. I'll try to say nice things in their general direction if I see them.
What happened?
my problem with the catholic church among a ton of other things is this:
you've got like the 10 commandments right, they're pretty big, explicit rules.
We should feel fortunate that they *aren’t* as powerful and vocal as they used to be.
ianericson they do that’s why if you are Catholic and divorced you don’t get communion which is the highest punishment.
If your church is super cool with open adulterers, you're going to a shitty church. Never once been to or heard of one like that.

HELL YEAH PHIL!! By far, one of my most favorite video of yours.
"My Boss agrees with me." (as in "Him") and then he says "my boss also agrees with me."
Turns out...
Thats actually a really sweet story and I'm glad you and your priests got the support you deserve
If the church actually lived up to what it was suppose to be instead of people cherry picking thru it for shit to support there views , religions would be much nicer and the wold a better place - Ex- altar boy
Yeah I'm not Catholic/Christian/Whatever but I did go to a Catholic grade school and then a Dominican high school.
