Thanks so much for sharing the conference with us; I ordered Dr. Bill's book before your presentation was over! Funny story: I have been gardening since the 70's but I had no idea what lady beetle eggs looked like.......til I squished them - thinking I was helping my son's garden......when he came home and said......."WHO killed my baby lady bugs???" Exit stage left......quickly! Lesson learned, as are many from watching your videos each morning before gardening!
As a bug nerd, this is the kind of stuff that led me to love managing my little ecosystem! Let me just host an epic battle in my yard real quick. Oh we have moquitoes, aphids, and beetles? Let's see what the dragonflies, spiders, wheelbugs, lizards, toads, wrens, and bats have to say about that ;)
I plan on setting up a beehive next year. I havent seen a single bee this year. Luckily we have some bumblebees around but compared to my childhood memories things have definately changed.
Thank you so much for all the consistently high quality content you share, Jon! You have me the confidence to start gardening :) I've been going back through, and watching the Annette Larkins interviews, as you're both the inspiration for anyone wanting to be longer-term, healthy raw... you're both amazing. Much appreciation to you, love to you, and Lauren
Great video guys! Your message is so important, Dr. Bill. Thank you for sharing! Do you know any new ways to outsmart Japanese beetles? Some years they strip my roses nearly bare. I grow "earth-friendly", hardy varieties, and never spray, but they suffer when those beetles appear.
wish it was that easy where I live. Leaf hoppers, pill bugs, aphids, powdery mildew, and blight destroyed my garden for 3 years from not spraying. Now I use garlic, black pepper, onion, hot pepper sprays I make my self to keep plants healthy.
I have a hummingbird feeder which attracts many kinds of hummingbirds. Are those beneficial. I have a bird feeder and those bring lots of finches. I also have a jacaranda tree.
I bought a cucumber plant from Callaway's and transferred it into a pot. It's growing well and flowering abundantly. It even has a couple of budding fruits but one fruit is starting to turn yellow and it's not even an inch long yet. I took off some of the big leaves around it thinking that it might not be getting enough sun. Is there any other advice you can give me?
S Hale I've been doing what John suggested, rubbing each flower to mimic what a bee would do but the flowers don't last very long. the next day after i touch them, they're wilting. Is that normal.
I have a gooseberry bush and every year it gets infested with little green ‘sawfly’ caterpillar. It takes me only about 10 minutes to pick them all off! …but I do leave a few on because I want the bush to put more energy into making berries and not too much into leaves. Plus isn’t it a good thing to let the plant build up its own toxins in the leaves to resist pest attack?
you can mimmick the SARS response without letting bugs attack your plant..make insect frass tea and it will keep the plants strong and resistant. the chitin in the shells of insects is what triggers the response. crab shells and shrimp shells also contain chitin.
Keep up your great videos ! Did you do a video where people had gotten wood chips, 3-4 ft piles and then added granite dust, after the piles aged, the kale planted later; leaves were 3-4 ft long and 1-2 ft wide. I saved that video on my channel but haven't looked for it again.. That was amazing, requires no digging and tree cutting companies give out crushed bark piles for free. I saw 2 european honey bees the golden ones, yesterday in a small patch of clover, near a freeway, city... was nice to see them there. And a classic red lady bug landed on me same day ... :)
I'd love to hear your opinion on the best hydroponic system currently on the market. I live in Key West so its very warm. I plan to set it up in a spare bedroom cause the white flies always seem to kill my plants. Growing in a small space. Message me if I need to pay in advance. Thanks.
What's up gardeners of the ancient land, it's me anyloverguy, this is very good for my garden, I grow many vegetables to feed my ants and other insects I have and maybe I can use the non beneficial bugs and feed them to me ants, circle of life continues
spinosad, BT, predator nematodes, predator mites, are some things in my arsenal of natural living pest control. and keeping healthy plants with strong cell walls is also key to keeping insects from infesting your plants in the first place. insects usually search out weaker plants.
ya you can get bee flower packs. they have humming bird and butterfly flowers packs as well. i got all of em, but i paid four dollars for a small tin of each one. ive seen bee, humming bird and butterfly flower packs at lowes and homedepot and about the same price is normal seed packs. they usually have single pack flowers with one type of flower for them. not all but many bell shape flowers humming birds like them to get their peaks in. my neighbor has humming bird and butterfly flowers and saw some last year, never see them around much either. hope that helps, the site i got the seeds from were seedsnow.com if you wanted to know.
Adopt as pets and share your garden? apply for a gopher sanctuary certificate and get a tax reduction? I had a little farm house with organic beds, and a paddock, which I let 6 hens patrol, the grounds at that house were over run with red biting ants, i got bitten all the time. I won't use poison, tried to flood them, lol... eventually just decided I was an ant miilionare, perhaps I could have had the biggest ant farm in the state... have moved since then. Miss the wonderful well water.
Benevolent ones I assume... ? I would rather have gophers than snakes.. but Ty I was sort of kidding around.. ;) couldnt help myself Maryann holmgren may not appreciate my humor ?
I fucking hate bugs. Letting them into my hard freaks me out. But i hate bad bugs on my weed plants. I will try this stuff out. Watching this whole thing was worth it to watch 16:20 old dude laugh. He sure loves him some insects.

maryann holmgren nuke them

What about black WIDOWS
Spiders in the house often die because they can't find food...
John, next time get a second mic
Monsanto is killing the bees
I tried and can't rely on the beneficial insects to come in on time or I won't have a garden anymore.
they probably were there. You can leave a host plant for the bad bugs to attract good bugs
@@jewel.s.journey thank you ... I'll try that.

Catch a wolf spider and have it inside to keep the roaches at bay
Don't kill spiders!!!!!!!!
Anna De La Torre I kill black widows. It's responsible parenting with children playing in the yard.
S Hale or teach your kids what they look like and to stay away... I would think that helps to
What about growing MUSHROOMS !!!

Anyone got a predator that kills squash bugs and cucumber beetles?
