In the Umeda Undermall, what's stopping you from going straight to the exit on the lift platform you ride over to the pipe? Is there a certain amount of the level you have to complete before riding it over? That's what I still don't get. Easily my favorite level in the game, with that being said. EDIT: After thinking about it a little, I'm pretty sure it's the ON-OFF switch at the midway mark that changes the course of the lift, which permits you to ride it over to the exit pipe. Only necessary in the secret exit route though.

Correct; this is also used in the normal any% easy route to exit the level with a reserve mushroom.

If you're too slow, the vine will stop on the next block. This will give me more time to adjust my positions in the next section.
