PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING:
As I didn't think I put it eloquently enough as I was tired, I wanted to talk about the conure cages again.
These cages are temporary set ups whilst we work on bonding either two or all of them together. When they are bonded, they will move into a huge flight cage together. If they do not bond, they will each get their own individual flight cage.
If we were to house them in flight cages now, it would make it much harder to put them in together as there would not be a neutral and novel space which is necessary for reducing the chance of territorial issues.
This video is a snapshot of our day and does not show the many hours that our conures (and cockatiels!) are out and about training, flying, cuddling and foraging. They are mainly in their cages for sleeping, eating and some independent play in the afternoon.
The conures use the entire height of the cage, from foraging in the substrate at the bottom, to playing with toys on the middle and top levels. They are perfectly happy in this temporary set up and if I thought for one minute that they were stressed, we would change their set up immediately.
I wanted to write this as I know that people on the internet make assumptions without the full picture, or write unnecessary comments for the sake of it. I get nasty comments regularly about my glasses and visual impairment, so I wanted to give everyone as much information about what's in the video before people jump to conclusions and pass judgments.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed the video!
You get nasty comments about your glasses?
I didn't think that, since u r so smart in bird knowledge I knew u had a reason to keep them in a tall cage. We hope u feel better soon!
I really did!

I get spots from masks as well. I'm trying to get hedwig and gizmo to go on the floor but the big table in their room is a lot more appealing to them🤣.
I've always wanted planet coaster, I'm so jealous 😂
That play stand is cool, the birds use a chair that i put their chop on in a bowl. Amazon shop will be cool! i think i saw David's book on there!

Nice video and great idea to show human's routine parallel to birds routine.👏👏👏
I'm a little bit enivious about the bird's good mood in the morning. Our birds are all morning grouches.
And it's funny to see every birds eats the veggies too. Except Chips and Fisch: seeds first💪. That's how we know and love Cockatiels for.
Thanks for watching! They’re not always well behaved! If it’s sunny outside, it’s chaos!
Lol they are both obsessed with squash seeds so they must be crunched first before the veg 😂

Great video your birds are so adorable I love watching these kinds of videos my daily bird routine is wake up to screaming feed the eclectus as quickly as possible because a hangry eckie is an annoying eckie hang out with Red because his calm and just sits on his stand and chews his toys then let all the crazy birds out and they just fly around or find places to nest or things to eat or chew try to do some cleaning while their out of their cages and not as likely to kill me have a shower with a bird or 2 that are behaving try and catch them all or bribe them with food so they’ll go back to their cages then repeat the process till they go to bed
Thanks for sharing Kylee! Every day is chaos with birds haha!

My favourite fruit is mango :o
Mine too! :)
What about watermelon though 🍉
@@AaronLewisOfficial watermelon is great too, but have you every had a fresh mango milkshake? It's a game changer!
Can you explain why you don’t cover your birds? My birds are in my bedroom, but I wouldn’t mind either way, but I thought they needed dark time… also can you describe a good night time routine… I have two cockatiels
Covering can increase hormonal behaviour, has a risk of crop impaction if they chew on the cover, and traps in stale air. If your bird is in your bedroom they might benefit from partial covering - either top and sides with front open, or top third only!
I have a video all about sleep on my channel!
By the way sophie where do you buy the conures' and cockatiels' foot toys? If you don't buy them then what items can I use as foot toys? Thanks
They aren't huge fans of foot toys unless its pieces of wood or paper!
@@BirdNerdSophie oh ok thanks
I want to know the drink you have for breakfast. I went to the transcript, sugar free summer free squash? Is it homemade?
No it’s store bought juice that you dilute with water 😊
Do you do chop everyday and mix it up after a week ? And when do you take the bowls out at the end of the day ? Is it just fresh in the morning then seed rest of the day ?
We make a week's worth of chop and change the ingredients weekly!
They get chop and sprouts from 8am-2/3pm, then their dry mix for the rest of the day!
Is the chop comprise of raw or cooked vegetables? I lightly steam my veggies for my parrot as i'm not sure if he'll like them raw.
Raw is best - cooking veggies makes them spoil faster and removes nutrients! 😊
What kind of substrate do you use? I’m looking to stitch over from newspaper as it looks so much easier like that.
We use easichick 😊
Hi sophie &David, can i ask how you prepare avian feather tea please. I'm sure I've seen a video with David putting water on it and giving it to the birds. On the packet, it says to use a fuser, i dont have one. Also do you dry the flowers ect and give to the birds and can you use as a topper straight from packet. Hope this makes sense. Thank you for all your advice V X
Hey! We just put the flowers in a cup with the water - no fuser here! And yes you can use toppers straight from the packet! :)
@@BirdNerdSophie Hi Thank you again. I have the Avian feather tea, is that ok to give from packet please. You've heloed so much with your video's and advice, really appreciate it. Thank you x
LOL obviously eggs are good for birds, it's what they feed on when in the egg and usually about 8 hours after
Absolutely! It’s cool that they’re still living off the yolk when they hatch!
Can 3 birds be in one cage?
Nice video!!
If you have a big enough cage then yes!
Hey Sophie! I absolutely adore your channel, I love your adorable little birds and your personality is just calm and fun at the same time!! I am considering between a gcc and a cockatiel. I know that birds all have individual personalities but Im just looking at general characteristics. I am looking for a calm bird, one that doesn't want to play every minute. Of course I would love a playful bird, but not one that is super hyper! I can handle the noise between both of these species. I am also wondering which species is more cuddly? I don't really care if the bird is cuddly, Im just curious :) Which bird is generally more well rounded but still has a lot of spunk? Thanks so much Sophie!!!
Thank you so much for watching! You're right, it really does depend on the individual! I wouldn't say either are particularly calm, though if I had to choose, I'd say cockatiels. Conures can be more playful and over-stimulated easily. If you mean cuddly up against you then conures, if you mean asking for scritches then cockatiels, though there are many in each species that don't like to be touched!

Sophie- the substrate you guys use we can’t get here in the US - Kaytee says 99.9% dust free and it is NOT 😖🙄 I’ve tried Carefresh as well but it seems dusty? Any suggestions? Thank you so much for all the best info!!
Hey! Carefresh is absolutely fine as we have used it before! Otherwise any untreated and dust free pine shavings would be fine!
it's really wonderful you have many birds and taking a very good care of it.
recently i got 1 pair of budgies and i am so much occupied to setup and give them comfort in new cage.
it's really time time-taking. I am wondering how you manage your job or income while doing so much other stuff ?
it would be really helpfull if you please share it.
Thank you so much! We work from home and RUclips is part of our work so it all comes together nicely to be able to look after so many rescue birds!
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you so much for quick respond and solving my doubts. 😇
I had a set of budgies and I noticed a lot of ppl made smart comments about the amount of work I put into the care of “just 2 budgies” 🙄 we made the choice to bring them into our home so I believe it’s our responsibility to give them the best care but I will say you’ll get a routine faster than you think. I got a food processor (cheap a Walmart under 20 bucks) & I done one batch of all their nuts & put those in a ziplock then done all their veggies in another batch and each day I just scooped their food into their bowls at breakfast & sprinkled their nuts into the veggies. They also have Harrisons high potency pellets in their cage throughout the entire day with oats, flax seed & oats. Budgies normally need the high potency pellets due to the horrible seeds & breeding. Fruits get added couple times a week. Again once you get a routine it’ll only take ya 5 mins a day. Prepping maybe 20 mins a week.
@@amandakay789 thank you dear for guidance and tips 😃
@@MeetMalli I’m sorry I just realized how crazy my comment read, I was half asleep 😂 I have an African grey also & my morning prep to get their food & water is 10 minutes. They all get chop (veggies) fruit a few times a week very little & nuts. Budgies will hate chop if they’ve never had it but the processor turns it into a mash almost so when they go to pick out their favorites the other stuff gets on their beaks & they eventually realize they like it. Mine came from a pet store unfortunately but their chop is now their favorite time of day. Seeds cut their lifespan by A LOT. It can all seem very overwhelming trust me I know, but you will get into your own rhythm & have it down packed. I was able to convert mine from seed to pellets in under a week. Best advice I can give you that I wish I had in the beginning is just make sure they have cuddlebone & stay away from all the “treats & supplements” from pet stores other than millet. If you don’t want breeding/hormone issues stay away from mirrors Hunts & any kind of nesting boxes. And obviously no nonstick cookware, candles, air fresheners or cleaning products. Even use in a separate room WILL kill them. I
Just in case you didn’t know some of those things, if you did I apologize lol
Hi Sophie, so do you feed the birds 3 times a day, plus leave seed out?
Usually twice a day - fresh in the morning and dried in the afternoon! Occasionally they get something at lunchtime like a small piece of cooked egg or herbs!
When they are out, they get access to foraging opportunities and training with seeds!
Me being thick but what is the substraight at the bottom of the cage made of? And where do you get it?
We use easichick - stockists are here: easibedding.co.uk/easichick/easichick-retailers/
what brand is the big cage with the cockatiels?
It’s the Liberta Oregon Flight Cage 😊
Hi Sophie, so sorry your poorly! Can i ask what bird stand that is in this video, the tall one please? I'm looking for a taller one rather than tsble top or play stand. Thsnk you so much xx
I think it's the rainforest t bar stand!

The brand is Liberta!
Pretty much the same day here, minus doing it all alone :(
Good to see you get some time to yourselves as well.
Cannot speak of GoT... I get a migraine when it is mentioned lol. Just wish that guy would finish the books.
I think it's important to have time away from the birds so they can have independent play and so they aren't so clingy with us!
Hope you and the birds are well!
@@BirdNerdSophie All is well, feel better! Looks like you could do with some serious rest there!
Do I need to cook the broccoli and carrots in the chop or just raw
Raw is best :)
Sophy, I have a question about their dry seed mix. I have had a huge problem sourcing striped sunflower seeds. For months now I've been buying the single ingredients for sprouting and dry seed mix, and the most difficut thing to find at a decent price are striped sunflower seeds. Their price is ridiculous. Where do you buy yours? We don't miss anything else, only those seeds. I've been buying 150g bags, very dear. Please can you tell me where you buy yours? I'm really frustrated!
They! I get sunflower seeds out of the shell as they are cheaper and will sprout too! I get them from Buy Wholefoods Online 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie thank you, I'll have to try them. I eat the un-shelled ones myself, so it would be easy to use those, but if there is no shell they won't even look at them! I have the weirdest birds in the whole world.
Hi Sophie, (I am from Paris) you said covering the cage promote hormonal behavior, that's what I am trying to avoid because they are hormonals and particularly one who relieves on the curtains, but the cage is in my bedroom unfortunately I don't have enough place at home. And as you know we are in longest days in year so how can I get them asleep before sunset if I don't cover the cage while continuing to leave my room lit? I still can't find a compromise to find a balance with the birds at home 😔 thanks for your work (I am following on insta too)
Hi Zak! Thanks for watching and following! As a compromise, you could partially cover the cage so it isn't fully covered, close the curtains and use a small lamp in the evening instead of having the room light on!
@@BirdNerdSophie thanks for answering! I will try 🤗
All my birbs hate carrots 😭 what should I do to try to encourage them to eat it bc when I put it in chop they leave it out 😭
You could try cooking them? They lose nutrition when cooked but it might tempt them to try!
Is it ok to include any types of worms in a conure’s diet? If so, which worms and how much, how often. Trying to get more protein in my baby’s diet. Thank you so much!
I only recommend mealworms - others types like earthworms can give your bird internal parasites!
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you, Sophie! What do you expect the portion recommendation would be? I can’t seem to find consistent information elsewhere online and am interested in your take.
@@er1cf a couple a day are fine!

Hi again, can i ask if you spend that amount of time every day with your birds? I feel so guilty, when i need to go out even tho i spend loads of time with my Tiels. I've also got senegal, sadly, i cant have him in the same room at the moment. My girls are scared of him even tho he's in a cage. Love to you all xx

I thought it was sad how much you felt you had to justify the birds cages. We all know you’re devoted slaves of your birdies and those of us who’ve been lurking here for a while know you guys love your birds and wouldn’t give them small cages. You should just ignore those unkind commenters on the net.
People can be very judgemental on the internet so sometimes find myself having to justify things strongly to try and avoid nasty comments! I will be uploading a new vlog soon showing their new set up now the temporary cages are gone!
Is it safe to keep bird on vegetables ,fruit , sprouts and grains means no seed and pellets and does veta farm essential pellets are good i searched but want opinion from you please please please reply reply reply please reply
Of course it is! And it’s much healthier than a formulated pellet or seed mix from the pet shop.
@@BirdNerdSophie ok thank ypu
