- I've seen this engine mentioned a few places, I'm not a huge rotary fan but it seems this could do a few things better than a normal rotary (as long as it braps) Funny name as this engine doesn't use pistons and the thing it has instead of pistons isn't liquid.
The firing order shown here is (chamber?) 1 2 3, I'm not sure how they number their chambers but this follows the angular rotation convention, and coincidentally ends up as 1 2 3.
The reason I did this before a rotary is that these are only single row engines, and i'm still not sure how to represent a multi row rotor.
it’s mesmerizing how much it sounds like the actual engine
No kidding; this guy seems to have cracked it
I never thought you would do rotary engine firing orders! I kind of want to see the Wankel rotary firing orders, as there are two, three, four, six, and twelve rotor Wankel engines that exist.
Then we have the non-existing ones such as the 5-rotor... (3.3L of displacement that of which could use 13B rotors as a theoretical engine with it sounding like similar to 5 cylinder engines since 4 rotors sound like 4 cylinder engines) ...or also known as I personally dub it the 33B.
The 8-rotor... (Personally dubbed the 53B also the same concept as the fictional 33B, sound probably like flatplane or a usual crossplane)
The 10-rotor... (60B with 6 liters of displacement, could closely sound like a LFA V10 or similar tone of sound to the other screaming V10s like the Porsche Carrera GT with a 4.8L V10)
...and 16-rotors, possibly with 10L of displacement if I'm correct which could sound like a V16 or the W16 found in the Bugattis.
@@SolaricAngel116 I've always heard rotary/wankel compared to piston engines in that a 13b 2 rotor is equivalent to a 2.6 liter 6 cyl 4 stroke. Equal to 6 cyl because the rotor has 3 sides for combustion (like 3 cylinders), and it has 2 rotors. For 6 sides total. Then it doubles in displacement because it has 2 powerstrokes per revolution vs a 4 stroke that has 1 powerstroke per revolution. So 1.3l 2 rotor = 2.6l 6cyl, 2.0l 3 rotor = 4.0l 9 cyl, 2.6l 4 rotor = 5.2 12cyl and so on. I think they sound similar to those equations too. The 2 rotor does sound like a high revving 6 cyl. 3 rotor almost sounds like a v10 but not quite its unique, and the 4 rotor does sound like a v12.
Wankels have the same power “strokes” per revolution of the eccentric shaft as two stroke engines and their crankshafts. Two rotors sound like two cylinder two strokes, three sound like three and so on. Listen to a 20b, then listen to a Saab 3 cyl two stroke or a three cylinder snowmobile. Former rotary owner here... lol
@@KD_0991 So, what you're saying is that these are equivalent to...
a 3.3L 5-Rotor = 6.6L 15-cylinder,
4.6L 7R = 9.2L 21cyl,
5.3L 8R = 10.6L 24cyl,
6.0L 9R = 12.0L 27cyl,
6.6L 10R = 13.2L 30cyl,
7.3L 11R = 14.6L 33cyl,
8.0L 12R = 16.0L 36cyl,
8.6L 13R = 17.2L 39cyl,
9.3L 14R = 18.6L 42cyl,
10.0L 15R = 20.0L 45cyl
10.6L 16R = 21.2L 48cyl
And so on... right?
@@collinhensley3760 So, the theoretical examples I set here such as the 33B, 53B, 66B (The 10-Rotor, should've been 6.6 liters and not 6 liters.) 80B (12-Rotor), 106B (16-Rotor, should be 10.6 and not 10 liters.) will sound like a supposed 2-stroke version of a engine of the same cylinders, if I'm not mistaken, Collin?
You actually did it😮
This should be shown in Engineering classes mate... 🤯🤯🤯🤯
When RPM increases, it reminds a little of the engine 3 cylinders in line
DUUUUDE! Since you are motivated enough to do this, I can only imagine what will come up next. I dont really care for rotary engines but this brings something new to the table.
F1 season 1983 is forever
Is this just me or the sound itself similar with 3-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine?
The firing interval is the same as a 3 cylinder but the speaker arrangement is a bit different. I should have probably used smaller speakers for this.
@@WilliamMoser i made a My Scale 1/18 Mini Wankel Rotary engine. Can i put sound like a My RX7?
@@WilliamMoser Could do a Mazda Miata MX5? Firing order is 1-3-4-2 like a diesel Rotary.
yes, exactly...similar sound to a 3 cyl or 6 cyl engines because: this engine is 4 stroke engine like the classic wankel - single rotor wankel have 1 power stroke / rotation, so it uses a firing order like a 2 stroke 1 cyl engine, and have so many power strokes / rotation like a 4 stroke inline 2 cyl engine...so now, comparing the single rotor liquid piston to the single rotor wankel: the wankel have 1 combustion chamber / rotor, liquid piston have 3 of them / rotor, so, single rotor liquid piston is effective like a 3 rotor wankel...so next: the single rotor liquid piston have 3 power strokes / rotation, which gives a firing order similar to a 2 stroke inline 3 / rotor, and following the theory, in conclusion: the single rotor liquid piston have so many power strokes / rotation like a regular 4 stroke inline 6...

Finally! I love the addition of the 10k rpm 😉
Since the combustion area of a rotary stays in the same spot, and multi row rotaries are usually about 120 degrees rotated from rotor to rotor, you could probably pull off a three rotor just fine, or even a two rotor.
I am curious as to what shape you'd use though.
Yeah I haven't really worked the shape out yet.
OMG I DIDN'T SEE THIS U ACTUALLY DID IT HOLY
Dude it would be awesome if you could do 2, 3 and 4 rotor. Since there is one exhaust port, you could do a top down view or side view, so essentially an inline. You would have a 1-2 firing order with an exhaust pulse every 270 deg of crank rotation per rotor. For 2 rotors they're phased 180deg apart. 3 rotors would be 1-2-3 phased 120deg. 4 rotors would be 1-3-2-4 but rotors still phased 120deg apart iirc. I wonder if that would work for your setup? And the brap would be from overlaping ports where the combustion is skipped.
The tone of this thing is very interesting. 2-5k rpm sounds identical to a typical subaru EJ, then past that it morphs into a rotary.
I'm so pumped for this design! Can't wait until it makes its way to the wider market 🤞
Yes!! All the RX-7s will be so happy now!!
Were watching history in the making with this new engine, I've excited to see a Turbo Diesel Version
This one is awesome!
Cheers!

In theory if you switched two of the sparkplug boots it'd turn the other way
Don't think so Tim
My guy, you think we can get a future Mazda sports car with one of these engines?
Dude, I have a suggestion for an engine. This comment is pretty long but I'll try to keep it on point.
There was talk awhile back about a "cam crank" engine in Australia called the Revetec. It could be arranged in a H (not a boxer, just a flat engine), a V (60 degree or 120 degree), an inline, and even an X. It could run as a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke, though all the videos of said Revetec engines were 4 strokes. Supposedly since the cam crank had three lobes (and could possibly have more), the timing gears for the camshafts could be roughly the same, if not then exactly the same size as the crank's timing gear since the crank produced more than one stroke for a single revolution.
Anyway, what I'm asking is if it's possible to do such a firing order video, you wouldn't mind doing so? I would love to hear what each configuration with different numbers of cylinders would sound like at higher RPM.
I remember reading about that engine some time ago, wasn't really sure what the point of it would be even if it did work. I don't have the time to do videos these days, but this one would sound much like similar configurations I've done, but with higher frequency noise for a given RPM. I think
@WilliamMoser I understand. Still, I really wish the concept pulled through and made it to production. It would've been hella nice to have an H-8 crate motor swap done in my older Chevy pickup (that I unfortunately no longer have 😭😢) or an X-shaped 4 cylinder in the back of a VW Beetle.
Anyways thanks again for sharing your wisdom and making so many fascinating videos. Take care and, as of this current-dated comment, happy Thanksgiving.
As a suggestion if you haven't thought of it already, is for different rows you could have different colours, so you would view it like this engine is, but row 2 could be blue? Flashing in the same spot as the chamber in front of it?
could work, it gives me another idea too, cheers!

Yeah that's part of it, I'm thinking a Wankel wouldn't look as interesting as the liquid piston but might sound more interesting.

Can you do a theoretical 2 rotor liquid piston where the other one is 180 degrees offset? As well as maybe a 3 rotor one where each rotor is equally offset and it's even fire, but not "big bang" where any two chambers fire simultaneously?

It would be, tricky to show visually though.
@@WilliamMoser sorry for the late response, youtube didn't notify me, very true! i'm not sure how your setup works but maybe put them side by side like an inline engine?
