  • Every rock hounder’s dream! What started as a metal detecting trip to East Texas turned into an amazing opportunity to collect some beautiful petrified wood and more for my lapidary projects. Enjoy!

Ahh, you found the treasure! I have buckets of that from my Husband’s family farm. There are a few whole logs there that came up when his great uncles dredged a pond. I was looking at them and said it looks like something blasted , knocked them down and burned them for a bit and then they were covered with sand. A few months later, I read about the Chicxulub Meteor that wiped out the Dinosaurs. It hit the Yucatán peninsula which had volatile gasses and exploded them all the way into the stratosphere. I had a geologist tell me petrified wood only happened in volcanic areas. I said there is only sand and no volcanic rock . They were petrified by the silica of the sand after 15 to 30 foot waves from the blast covered them. ( there is a video reenactment of it on YT ). It shows central Texas as a bay that shoots up towards Dallas. The Texas coast was also more inland toward Victoria. He then said “ok, now I’m interested. I hope he’s checking it out.
I find most of it slightly harder than just quartz. So plan for more time In stage one especially the translucent pieces.

Texas roadsides have been one of my most productive areas. I am surprised you picked up 2 agates…East Texas has loads of petrified wood but is light on agates. Great day! Some of that wood will color nicely tumbled. I am currently finishing tumbling my favorite little chunk of fossilized wood that I found on the Nueces in that area you did an earlier video on. The banding and colors are really nice. I wish I could get out to that spot more than once a year. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your treasures.

I appreciate your rockhounding adventures. We have plans on visiting Austin and San Antonio in early April. I think I have a handle on the location along the Nueces, but I could use a tip on safe access to the Llano River. The video above was awesome, thank you!

Thanks so much for watching Lynn! I hope you find lots of goodies in April. You’ll have no issues accessing the Llano river from downtown Llano. There are several options. Good luck!

Hi Kenneth, thanks for watching. I’ve been detecting much longer. In fact I bought my first tumbler just to help clean my finds. It was only after several years that I decided to try my luck with rocks! 😁

Hey Clenton, thanks so much for the offer, I’ll keep it in mind. Right now I’m not set up to sell anything but someday I probably will. I have a couple of videos in the works which will show those stones getting tumbled. They should be done soon 🤞.
