- Shakshuka is an easy, healthy breakfast recipe (or any time of day recipe) in Israel and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa. It’s a simple combination of simmering tomatoes, onions, garlic, spices and gently poached eggs. Essentially, eggs in tomato sauce. It’s nourishing, filling and one recipe I guarantee you’ll make time and again - whether it's for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Enjoy!

I literally went “woaaah” when she opened the spice drawer. I NEED THAT
Haha! I live for an organized spice drawer :)
Me too
So jealous! lol
Same my face was like 👁👄👁
Bev Lim I’m a guy that loves to cook, I did the same thing! Looks like 200 to 300 dollars of spices!
My mouth was wide open as soon as you opened your spice drawer! wow!!!
Haha. I have a whole other video all about my spice drawer if you're interested. :)
Same 😂
I love it! :)
@@Downshiftology YES PLEASE!!!
me too haha
As a North African, I definitely recommend this dish. It tastes amazing every time!!
Just finished serving this up in a bowl.I have to say that this is delicious. It was also super easy to make, and i’m 14. I would definitely make this again.
Wonderful! I'm glad you loved it Christianne. :)
This is an original turkish food i swear
I'm Palestinian and shakshuka was always on the breakfast table growing up. My mom would always add a whole jalapeno without cutting it so that it would give a great flavor without being too spicy. It's interesting that you're eating it with a fork, we've only ever eaten in with pita bread or Arabic Taboon bread. I would love to see more middle eastern recipes on you channel. Did you try Mansaf while you were in Jordan/ Palestine?
Also, if you loved this recipe, you'll love the, Together: Our Community Cookbook that Meghan Markle worked on. It's on sale for around $11 at Target. Lots of middle eastern recipes that are easy to follow/ don't require exotic ingredients
Thanks! And I'm gluten-free so don't eat pita bread. But I'll definitely have a few more Middle Eastern inspired recipes early next year. :) Thanks for the book recommendation as well!
@@Downshiftology Yay! Can't wait
I actually eat it with a fork too! Lol I know it’s not the way to eat it but when you’re dieting a fork is the way to go haha 😆
@@journeyoflife8229 Haha true! Bread is such a stable in the middle eastern diet
omg that spice collection 😆
Love all my spices!
@Hestia Demeter yep. although, how many white people do you think are watching videos of every other race? probably not many. and not everyone shows their spice drawer/cabinet/stock.
A great idea to this is to make a big batch of this, store it in the fridge and then reheat in the morning and add the eggs. A quick breakfast in no time and I'm sure the more the sauce rests, the better it gets. 💗
i was just thinking how big of a portion this is :s im making tomorrow thanks :) i will refrigerate the rest
Ohhhhh this is a great idea.
I’m middle eastern I love this dish! I add avocados on the side
Me too! Can't have too many avocados. ;)
Yes, Shashuka, avocado and naan bread, it's out of the world, and so nutritious, God's goodness to us. Praise God for all he has given unto us.
Just a slight rectification: shaksuka is originally a Tunisian dish that's been transported to Israel by immigrants. I'll try not to make this comment political, but Israel has been trying to "create" a culture for its newly developed country and they've been stealing a lot of Palestinian Art and cuisine and in recent years they expanded this cultural theft to other Arabic countries. Nothing makes me happier than to see people gathering around a love for a dish that has been passed through generations and me, myself I love trying new dishes and food from around the world. It just makes me appreciate more humanity and what they've achieved on this planet, but I'd like it when I attribute every dish to its original roots as a way of respect to all the people that ever cooked that dish and helped preserve it.
I just finished making this, and it was delicious. I walked to the store just to pickup some herbs so I could try the recipe out straight away.
Made it exactly as described in the video, although my eggs took a little longer to cook(10 mins.) and I used chopped tomatoes, as that’s what I had on hand. It seemed a little wetter than in the video, but after cooling it a little, the consistency thickened.
Thank you so much! 10/10
Glad you enjoyed this shaksuka! ❤️
Amazing
I am from the Middle East (Palestine), this dish is deeply traditional especially for lazy weekends morning breakfast. But I recommend to try it without onion (as we used to prepare) and with extra extra Chili pepper. I SWEAR you will love it.
Mohammed Hasan she used onion
It makes me so happy to hear you say that Mohammed! My family is from Morocco and we never used onion. None of the Moroccan Jews I know use onion in Shakshuka. It's like the golden rule of authentic Shakshuka - no onions. Otherwise it's just cumin flavored spaghetti sauce. Thank you for the confirmation! Shukran!
@@jewlicious Its Algerian people do onion in the recipe ... Marocan doesn't use the onion :)
@@jewlicious let's be honest morrocan Jews are not even native to morocco. Shakshukais a middle Eastern and north African dish were people in different countries add what they like to it. You're obviously not a native to the MENA region.
@@enlightenlife2840 Tomatoes have only been consumed in MENA for about 200 years so take it easy there. Moroccan Jews have been there for way more than 200 years. Jews were in Morocco before Arabs were. I was born in MENA and I live here too. For the record.
I LOVVVVVVE Shaksuka! Even though I know how to make it, I STILL can't resist watching when another video pops up in my feed. I do mine with breakfast sausage. Best breakfast ever!
It's definitely a go-to breakfast idea for me as well! Love how you're adding sausage to yours too to beef it up 😊
Eggcellent! Delicious, authentic and your presentation makes it easy for those of us with two left paws who can burn water. Thank you.
I’ve never cooked anything before because I was afraid of trying something new let alone screwing up but tonight I’ve decided to make this for myself and it came out wonderful, I followed your recipe step by step, I added a jalapeño to give it more spice but overall it’s one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten and I’m proud to say I cooked it myself. I’m definitely going to practice more and hopefully become decent enough to feel confident and comfortable, thank you for helping me break out of my shell.
I made this today, and it was fantastic! I love how straightforward and simple this recipe is. The only problem that I had was that the tomato can that I purchased actually had a lot more juice than what was shown in this video, and the recipe almost became too watery. I let it simmer for a long time, though, and everything worked out in the end. I also added sprouts and avocado slices on top.
I've tried this using tomato sauce, and adding small tomatoes, cherry tomatoes or some similar kind. I've been happy with how that's worked out. It's a fun dish, it can be made with many different ingredients.
Crushed tomato makes a pretty good sauce when you add some herbs, too. "Vegetable Juice" is great if your stew needs a bit of thinning. Much more flavorful than adding water.
It's absolutely yummy. It's a maghrebian (moroccan, tunisian & algerian) plate we prepare it here must of time.
Love from 🇲🇦
Wonderful!
Tunisian to be exact.
you forgot Libya
To be exact it's Tunisian
@6
So? that doesn't mean that it isn't Maghrebian
Hi guys! I have many recipes coming your way, inspired by my recent travels, but I wanted to share this Shakshuka recipe with you first. Have you ever had it? It's so simple yet abundantly flavorful. I also have a Green Shakshuka recipe on my website (linked in the description), so give that one a try as well! xo - Lisa
Hi Lisa, I'm going to make this for breakfast on Christmas Day as it looks so festive! Btw, you missed the eggs off the ingredients list on the printable recipe. 💛
Hi Lisa 🙋🏻♀️ I was raised on shakshoka for all time healthy dish 👌 it is originally from Yemen 🥰👌I loved it thanks 🙏💝🌿🌷
I LOVE shakshuka. I’ve never had it in a restaurant or anything, but I’ve been making a version of it at home for a few years.
I am from Turkey. This is a very common egg and tomato dish known as “Menemen “ . There are different types of menemen with white or yellow cheese or egg scrambled with the tomato and green pepper sauce. The never ending discussion here is about 🧅, to add it or not. Thank you for sharing this version with us...
Shakshuka this is the most lovely dish in Algeria 🇩🇿 specifically when it’s spicy 🌶 onions tomatoes bell peppers 🫑 olive oil eggs in the end with some Algerian home made bread kasra yummy 😋.
Algerians Marocan Tunisian and Lybia people do this breakfast all the time... ❤
Omg just made this just the smell when you take the lid off 🤤 sooo good definitely making this a staple each week.
Yes, I am from middle east, we make shakshuka but with less ingredients.. try it with fresh tomatoes with onion, eggs, salt and black pepper. It's really delicious.
(Fresh tomatoes) make huge difference in taste
Very good 👍 👏 👌
It’s time for me to go back on the whole 30 again and you recipes look so good. Thanks for being there for us.
Thanks Norma! I'm so happy you love them!
Yes yes yes!!! More food from your travels please!!!!!
I'll have more coming next year!
I totally agree with you we definitely need more food from around the world
OMG…that spice drawer is LIFE
with us, in Algeria it is also called Shakshuka it is usually eaten in summer with traditional yeast bread called "Kessra" ....... thank you for this video
It looks so yummy! I can't eat bell peppers, so I'm so grateful you did a green shakshuka version! Thank you💚
You're welcome! The concept of shakshuka is so easily adaptable. Hope you enjoy the green one!

I just made this for dinner and it was awesome. I added a can of chick peas to provide a little more bulk and it was very filling.
That's a wonderful addition with the chickpeas! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
OMG! I just made this and it was amazing!!! I like crunch and salt so I fried tostada shells and added garlic salt. I loved it so much I ate 3 servings! Thank you! 😘

I went to Jordan and Egypt in 2021. Love this dish!
I love this dish and this type of food. I had a friend who taught me this and many like it. The food is energizing and delicious! Thanks!
It really is energizing and definitely made my gut happy while I was traveling.
Looks Delish! Can’t wait to make this recipe… And, I also said woaaaah when she opened the spice draw. Thanks 😊
I LOVE THAT SPICE DRAWER.

If you want to do the Greek version, add some Feta at the final couple of minutes!
Can never go wrong with some feta on top :)
I'll have to try this!
And olives
I looove shakshuka. It's one of those perfect meals!
I am from Turkey and we never eat şakşuka (in Turkish language:) for the breakfast! And we never add eggs to that. I just wanted to share this information and it is really interesting for me to see another version of our şakşuka! :)
I love middle eastern food. Need to try this one!
Spice collection goals! Also this recipe looks great! I have tried something like this before at a breakfast restaurant. I loved it!
Made this exactly as instructed and it was FANTASTIC! Thanks for the recipe!
Glad you loved the recipe Rob!
I love that spice drawer 😍
I love this recipe my local bakery use to serve it and dont anymore so tomorrow morning it will be in my belly! Thanks for sharing
I cannot live with this without rice. My beautiful 2 cups of rice.
I cook your shakshuka oftentimes, and it has become my family's favorite breakfast! Thank you so much, Lisa!
So glad to hear that 😊
This remains one of my favorites, and I'm about to make it for my wife for Mom's Day. Keep'em coming Lisa, you're the best! -MOE
Happy to hear this recipe is a staple :)
A lady went massively viral on X concerning her views on having children. She mentioned wanting to cook Shakshuka for the first time. Sooooo, here I am! 😂 My chickens just started laying eggs and I have many cans of San Marzano tomatoes. Thanks for the recipe, I subscribed.
Hi, I'm from Turkey, and we have shakshuka too, however with slightly (!) different ingredients. Instead of the eggs, we put in fried eggplant and peppers and is usually eaten as a meze (side dishes).
We have these for breakfast in Jalisco Mexico. Called,"Huevos Aogados". They are delicious 😋
AKA Huevos en Purgatorio, Huevos al Diablo, etc.
OMG YOUR SPICE DRAWER! It's a DREAM!!
Thanks so much 😊
That spice drawer is a thing of galactic dreams my gawdd!!!😍
Hahah thank you!! 😊
Looks delicious, but I would recommend seasoning this dish much earlier, and add a knob of butter at the end.
So it’s basically ratatouille with eggs... LOVE IT 😍
Been eating for a long time when I lived in Tripoli Libya my best friend Jewish mother used to make it for me all the time
I made this for breakfast this morning and it is very good! My 11 year old loved it, and my super picky 13 year old says it was just "ok", but she ate it, which is huge. I will definitely be making this again.
Happy to hear your children loved this recipe 😊
I’m from Tunisia, and we usually add A LOT of tomato paste and Harissa
I am not from the Middle East, just next to it :), but we used to make similar dish, (no cumin, though, just salt and pepper for spices, and sometimes omitted garlic in the morning). We were mixing whipped eggs in, instead of cooking them whole in separate wells. P.S. And I am as impressed with your spice drawer as almost everyone here :)
I’m from Israel and this is almost exactly how i make it! I love eating it for dinner with pita bread or challah bread And feta cheese on top😋
Sounds great! 😊
It tasted so good when I made it thank you so much
Nicely done :)
Same in Morocco, we call it also "bayde bel maticha" literally Eggs with tomatoes hhhh. We add also some black olive, it gives a nice flavor, and of course we eat with hands, with a fresh bread (check tafarnoute bread btw).
Thanks for the name! I tried this while I was in Morocco and it was amazing but I could never remember the name to look up a recipe. Just need some Mint tea to go with it 👌 I loved your Country
Excited to make this tomorrow. Thank you!
Hope you loved it Carolyn! 😊
I tried it and it was wonderful ❤️ thank you for this wonderful recipe ❤️
Shakshuka is a Saudi dish! I was surprised when I found the video because it’s a recipe from my contry😂😂 thanks for bringing it here!

That’s my favourite 😍😋
🥰Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼
They look amazing so good.
They eat them too in Mexico they called them Huevos Ahogados
Oh wow, didn't know this - just looked up the Huevos Ahogados and it looks yum!
Have just made it for lunch. Took less time to make than sandwiches!! Middle child pulled a face when given the plate yet...his plate was sure clean when finished! I have some left over (made double) we’ll have that for breakfast tomorrow. Can’t wait already!
Wonderful! I'm happy it was enjoyed!
I Like that she uses onion and garlic almost in every video. I really love onion and garlic. And she is so beautiful! I’m soon gonna try her recipes, are someone tried already?
Finally managed to try it last Sunday. We celebrated the 1st advent here and wanted to make it a little more special. And it was!! Insanely delicious! We‘ve decided it’s a keeper for our family. BTW I love your channel. You’re amazing!
Thanks so much Ana! Glad you loved this recipe.
Arabs been doing this for ever. This is arab inspired 100 percent
Nope
It's most likely an Amazigh dish from the Maghreb.
Super tasty! Thank you for sharing!
I just found your channel today and holy cow! I'm so glad that I did!! I LOVE to eat healthy and I'll be trying several of your recipes :)
Another yummy dish that I have to try!
Definitely something that makes for a great meatless meal during Lent. Thanks for this one.
Made this for my husband and he love it...thank you 😊
Thank you for the video .
This is a Moroccan dish not Israeli .Jews who migrated from Morocco to Israel took it among a lot of other culinary traditions .
Best regards .
I got inspired to try a version of this last night - and I made it again this morning. So I had to come back and watch the video to see what I was missing. Mostly I got it right, and it was delicious! I considered a generous portion of the sauce plus three eggs to be one serving. 🤣. It was so good!!!
Sounds about right! Lol. I usually do two eggs for myself...but who's counting. ;)
You look amazing.. it must be a combination of eating well and living the life you dream of.. I don’t do either and I look 10 years older than I really am.. I’d better straighten up soon
Good recipe ! Todah Rabba !
This is definitely on my to do list 😊
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the recipe David. :)
My mom made this on Sundays minus the chili powder, instead adding green Chili’s, and a little less tomatoes. Juevos Rancheros is what my mom called it! I will try this version!
thank you, lisa 😍 that just tastes like an exciting vacation 👍🏼
It sure does!
My fave breakfast dish now!
It's definitely a staple around here 😊
I blv it's a Palestinian/Moroccon dish, but I have it with peeled Fava beans.. n it's heavenly, pretty common in Egypt. I never use herbs on top but will def. try, urs looks delicious
Me encantó tu receta 😋 le prepararé
This looks amazing! I was hoping this was a recipe you'd do after your trip. I can't wait to try it
Thanks Sarah! And yes, shakshuka had to be tops on my list. ;) Though I've got more coming!
@@Downshiftology Awesome! I'm looking forward to them 😊
The green variation of shakshuka was delicious! From now on I will only have Brussels sprouts the shakshuka way.
Looks awesome! Would you be able to prepare the sauce (before adding the eggs) so you would have it prepped for several meals? So instead of making several single servings, just heat up enough sauce and add two or three eggs!
Yes, absolutely! You know I'm all about the meal prep. ;)
Made this today for dinner----delicious! The family says thank you!
Wonderful! Glad you enjoyed it Christine!
its an Arab dish actually , Israelis learned it from the Palestinians long time ago, i liked your recipe even though its slightly different than ours witch i think its the original one, love to see more middle eastern dishes especially from jordan.
It's not an Arab dish but an Amazigh dish from North Africa. Israelis learned it from the Jewish immigrants from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Palestinians learned it from the Muslims from North Africa who visited the Holy Land. The same way North Africans learned Muhalabieh and other Middle Eastern desserts
정말 좋은 레시피입니다~^^내일 한번 만들어 봐야겠습니다~
I will travel to Tel Aviv in this month end ! yummy ,by the way !!,

100% true
My husband and I really enjoyed the recipe. Thanks!
Happy to hear both of you enjoyed this recipe 😊
If you like this try huevos rancheros. It’s a spicier version.
I cant eat huevos rancheros or vhilaquiles due to recent dietary restrictions so this is a great alternative to my hispanic palate... def will throw in a jalapeno to simmer w the sauce to.makenot spicy lolol
I can imagine if adding Greek yogurt in the side would be perfect too ! Yum yum !
Put two eggs for every person around the edge and a good sized blob of yogurt or whipped cream cheese or sour cream in the center. Then when you portion it out, everyone gets part of the dairy.
Loved it! What brand of pans do you use to cook? I want a new pot set and I do not know what brand to buy.
Help me please!
I use All Clad mostly. This one is linked in the video description.
@@Downshiftology Thank you!
Miam Shakshuka this Tunisian dish is so delicious 😋😋 Shakshuka comes from verb Shakshak which means mix in Tunisian dialect (Only Tunisians says Shakshak )and becomes popular in North African countries and all over the world
It looks like “menemen” rather than “şakşuka”
Melis Barin From what I read, both dishes are almost the same, though shakshuka* also has feta (does menemen have feta, too?). Would you care to tell me the difference between these dishes?
*Sorry! My iPad is not showing the option for the s you used to write shakshuka, so I had to spell it differently.
@@TheCatWitch63 I think it is safe to assert that shakshuka and menemen are the same dishes which have different names in different regions. Apparently, Turks call this recipe menemen while Israelis and North Africans call it shakshuka. You can definitely have feta cheese or some other melting cheese (e.g., mozerella) on top. It is also common to have sausages as topping in Turkey. The funny thing is shakshuka is a totally different dish (more like a platter) in Turkish cuisine whose main ingredient is eggplant. Here is a link to that. ruclips.net/video/vXbrGAOmmy8/видео.html
And below is even a song dedicated to this recipe. Don't ask me why on earth would someone compose a song for shaksuka :D
