We, as grandparents, have completely stopped giving “things” as gifts. We have 5 grandchildren who all have at least 2 sets of grandparents each (plus all the other relatives) and they get so much “stuff” they they don’t even know who gave it to them😳 We put money in a college fund for each grandchild on their birthdays and at Christmas. We choose instead to give them “experiences” tailored to each child. For instance, we have one who loves cooking so one year we gave her a week long cooking school for kids. Every summer, we take them for a week and call it “Camp Nana/Papa” and do fun things with them without their parents around....it’s exhausting but oh so much fun! Our oldest is 13 now and still wants to come for the week in the summer so we must be doing something right🤣

My husband and I are doing the same. Savings account deposits on holidays and birthdays with a couple small gifts through out the year. Time together playing and making memories is the very best gift we can give them!!

My husband and I had to force both sets of grandparents to stop purchasing our eight boys "things" They were upset but we did not have space. We told them to keep the "things" at their house, those items piled up, and they finally understood what we were saying.

It's like when you walk into the room and you are overwhelmed by all the stuff and you don't know where to begin. The kids feel like that and then they can't see what they have or can't find anything. You are doing a great job and it's wonderful your husband is helping. I've enjoyed this challenge you are going through and see that I can make progress in my own home. TFS

Same thing happened years ago when my sister and I organized our nieces playroom (couldn’t even walk in at first 😂)After they went to bed,we made piles of “like with like”,Barbies, puzzles, etc. and threw away the obvious trash and broken items. The next day, they went through each category and got rid of WAY MORE than we would have. Turns out,you just have to make it doable for them, who knew?🤔😂. On a side note,on almost every single one of those hoarder shows, the hoarder says that their Mom would just get rid of their stuff without asking 🧐 and it was obviously traumatic.

We asked grandparents and other relatives to limit gifts to books and things smaller than a shoebox. It really helps with the “bigger is better” mentality.

I agree it is so important to get your kids involved, as much as their age allows. I had mentioned recently that I had stuff for a donation together and my 20 year old daughter came down with a few things to add. A good habit to have, move things on that you are no longer using. Great job by the family!

I only found your channel a couple days ago, and I already appreciate your partnership with your husband (and therefore your whole family). You obviously work well together and support each other through processes like this, even when one of you is taking the lead on a particular project. I so appreciate the two of you just living, demonstrating through the way you exist together and work with each other, that there is a healthier partnership available to couples and families, rather than pushing all of household-running onto one person. There are more equally yoked options, ones that set better examples to our kids. You're proving it. Thank you for that ministry (because I really think it is one).

Hello, Shannon! Great job!!! That was a lot of hard work for your family. Just a suggestion: maybe you can ask the kids to place all toys back where they belong before picking up a new toy or set of toys, and as a reward, you can all get more time doing things you love/ fun stuff like a movie or a game instead of spending the time cleaning or tidying up . I always told my son to place all puzzle pieces back in the box before we start a board game, or put balls back in the bin before we play with the cars and vice versa. And so on. This way, there is no clutter to tidy later on and they do add up.

I’m so enjoying your channel! I love how the whole family participates! I don’t know if you watch Mai Zimmy’s channel, but I think you might like how she boxes up some of her kids toys and puts them away. She’ll rotate boxes so it’s like they get new toys every so often. It also helps keep so much of the clutter contained. Sometimes they’ll lose privileges if they don’t clean up after themselves and toys will disappear until they earn them back. Living With Cambriea does toy declutters before birthdays and Christmas in anticipation of new stuff coming into the house.

  • @corinnestauffiger5693

We talk a lot about giving toys away when they are not used anymore. Surprisingly they even came with own suggestions about what to give away. Itry to reflect my observations with them: you have not played with this for months, please think about giving it away. It takes time but it sinks in. But your kids did a good job. Make the boundaries the bad guy, that is what the minimal mom always says 😬👍💪
I really liked that this was kind of a family project. Often I see just see the mother do this alone.
Presents: we do wishlists. We discuss with the kids what their wishes are befor an event. The we might add some non-toys options like new colothing. We go for smaller things or we try to stay in one category. Like prefer to get more Legos than a new category. Or we ask for „using-up“ things like bubble bath or craft material. Experiences are also great. My daughter loved to shop with her godmother for a new dress.

My mum had a one-in-one-out policy when it came to stuffed animals (with a few exceptions here and there), which I'm really grateful for as it taught me to easily declutter sentimental items (as, like any child, I *adored* my plushies) and replace them with new items that I love. That's how we kept our toys to a minimal.

I think I'd tell the kids 'if you don't put it away after you've finished playing with I'll collect it up and sell it, or donate it to a child who will look after it'. They really don't need so many toys, it is wasteful and mostly plastic which is not good. Go minimal and feel the freedom. Good luck. 😊

I really enjoy your videos...”real people”. Decluttering videos are so inspiring and as I declutter my own stuff, I am rethinking gift giving. I don’t have children so I never experienced the influx of toys into my home, but I am an Aunt and unfortunately have participated in the influx😞 of toys into my sister’s home. Living and learning! I did want to suggest that you place a “donate box” in your play room to encourage your children to continue to get rid of items they no longer want. I have to give credit to a “Hoarder’s Heart” for that recommendation. She has videos of her boys helping declutter their rooms. Children definitely seem to know what they want and what they don’t want. Great life lessons.

I’m new to your channel and appreciate you sharing your thought process along with the action. One suggestion for keeping it clean - add pictures to the front of your labeled cubbies. You can print clip art or cut pictures from a magazine or toy packaging and affix with clear packing tape or contact paper. OR use card stock or glue to cardboard and attach with sticky-backed Velcro to make it even easier when you need to change the label. I know some of us like more uniformity and less visual clutter, but the visual clues can really help kids find and put away their toys. Thanks again!

For incoming gifts, I’ve gotten very clear with wish lists. I email specific items to the grandparents and include a note that if they want to get something not on the list they have to ask first as we have limited space. The first item they gave us that wasn’t on the list stayed at their house to be played with there. Ideally I’m able to keep the items to consumables that I know the kids will use up, e.g. play-doh or paint, so we don’t actually acquire more, but maintain.
Also, we’ve started a tradition with my daughter and mother-in-law. For my daughter’s birthday she does a clothes shopping trip with her Nonna. Nonna gets to buy cute clothes, which she loves; my daughter gets to pick out her own clothes, which she prefers; and I spend less money on clothes because my daughter keeps growing and needing new things. It’s a win/win/win.

I regret soooo much letting my kids have more toys than they needed and having big birthday parties every year for them because they don't even remember the parties .My advice for you is to limit the number of toys they can have, have small bday parties and save the money for college. Believe me, you're gonna need it.

    • @LeafLikeOnATree
      @LeafLikeOnATree  3 года назад +1

This is such great advice. We already don't do big birthday parties (just family gatherings) and it still is too much 😂 We use to live in scarcity and now we live in plenty, but that scarcity mindset stuck around and hurt us by us collecting an overwhelming amount of stuff (especially clothes and toys.) I never said no to hand-me downs and still struggle with that. I don't even want to think about what college is going to cost... yeeeesh!

You and hubby make a great team, but all the kids and you and hubby make an extra great team. I've often wondered, not having kiddies myself, how parents can possibly stop the inflow of products through gifts. Everyone feels they ought to give gifts to kiddies - grandparents would be hurt not to in some cases - and it seems impolite to demand everyone stop. It's certainly a modern day dilemma for mums and dads.

The labeling of the bins I would change to the bigger font size...easier to read and put back in the correct bin. You are doing an awesome job. Maybe before Christmas go thru the playroom and donate a bunch of toys to be ready for the new Christmas toys.

As a grandma instead of sending toys for birthday and even Christmas I opened a bank account and what ever I would have spent on toys I put into their accounts . I also give them all a few small useable gifts at Christmas . One child now has over 5,000 from just doing that . other family members have started to do it .. the kids are excited about the $ .. I tell them they don't get it till they are 30 (lol) .. toy would have been long gone .. Now I even take the kids to the bank and they get to put the money in . or I give them a card with the deposit slip and the total amount .

Might not have kiddos, but my dog loooooves stuffed animals. She has a BarkBox subscription for every month. I have laundry baskets filled at this point. She plays with every one. It doesn’t help that they make so many cute ones that I’m now addicted to seeing her play with a cool one i see at the store.

How do you like the bark box. I have 3 puppies, do you think they could share one box?

    • @missmustache4207

@@LeafLikeOnATree yes, make sure you sign up when they have the promo, the extra toy and an extra treat in ALL your boxes for the year. Then you get 3 toys and 3 treats in every box.
Not the extra toys/ treats in 1 month, the promo better then that.
Ive been getting it for over a year and the toys are the best! Well made. You can also put in your pet allergies and they will adjust the treats.
      Well worth the price.
Since she has so many toys when we get the box and i notice a toy that might not excite her in it, i sell those on ebay and they always sell, helps with the cost. She loves the interactive toys and there’s so many hilarious ones.
Ill comment if i see the promo happening

My kids only got one big basket of toys at a time. I kept the rest locked up. They could switch out when they got bored but you'd be surprised how long they could play with one basket.

    Looks fantastic 👍
Just a little hint, I had 3 children in a very, very small house, so it was almost impossible to stay on top of the "mess" lol. So I decided that the kids needed to have the responsibility of their own mess, each night, 10 minutes before bed time I would tell them, whatever is not put away in its right place, it would be in the bin when they woke up in the morning. It worked after a few days of missing toys in their rooms lol.

We might have to try this. We just have to commit to the follow through. That's where we have failed in the past.

I think you guys are perfectly normal to “occasionally” just grab something and put it in another room while decluttering. We have all done that. It’s OK! You guys and your girls should be so happy with yourselves and now they can truly enjoy their space. Our rule…when it got to that stage… “new toy in…old toy out”. You just have to cuz it’s never ending!
What the he#*! Your fingers were broken! 🤣😂 Awesome job! 🥰 Karen
