  • The next fly tying video in My Trout Fly Series, I tie up a French Partridge Mayfly.
In the previous video, it was all about the nymphal stage of an Ephemera Danica, the largest of the Mayflies. A common anglers term for these is a Green Drake. Although some I believe refer to the male as a Green Drake and the female as a Yellow Drake. My understanding is that the name Drake came from the resemblance of the adult mayfly to the shape of a mallard drakes wing. However, I maybe completely wrong πŸ€”
Hope you like the fly pattern πŸ‘

What are the different properties between french partridge and english or grey partridge?

They're both in the same family of game birds. French / Red-legged is a slightly larger bird, and the feather used here is a more striking flank feather than what you'd find on a grey partridge πŸ‘

@garrickeckardflytying thanks Garrick. In my youth they were all Grey Partridges and Red Legs were interlopers. I have a grey partridge skin and feel guilty for not using it enough.

Not a problem at all. I think red-legged are now more prominent than the indigenous grey partridge. Nothing wrong with subbing grey for the head hackle, especially dyed golden olive for these style of mayfly patterns. Gosling with dyed golden olive flanks from a grey partridge is a lovely variant.
