- Is Mountain Biking really harder than EMTB? Steve takes three bikes back to a grueling rock slab climb that he hasn’t been to in 6 years to see just how different a mountain bike is when compared to a lightweight and full-power E-Bike, we know the E-MTB will be faster on the climbs but, by how much?

I love my E-Mtb. I like the technical uphills as well now. Looking forward to an epic adventure in the not too distant future.
Im getting back into the hang of mt biking, on real trails, but doing it on a Spectral ON CF8......its an eye opener alright!
We have rocks, on top of rocks, on lava cap, with cemented in lava cap boulders for trail around here.
The E bike gives you that burst in between the worst spots, to get up and over, just enough momentum is kept up to climb some amazing things.
My skill is improving but a long ways to go. I keep realizing my 45 years hard core on dirt bikes/road bikes/street bikes/gravel bikes..............it all works together to keep me moving. Its all about time on 2 wheels....and learning new techniques.
My 1st time on an e-bike. It's like bicycling 2.0. Probably will never go back to analog personally!
Today I did a 1000m climb 44km and still feel quite happy. On my analog bike, I have to put the same effort, just reduce the altitude and distance.
It's not like e-bikers always want it easy, sometimes we want to explore new areas! Some paths are so steep that require swapping the derailer and cassette to be able to climb on analog.
Omg Steve, what a forgotten rocky muddy road! But great for testing the skills :)
Just got my Fuel EXE a couple months ago. My 2022 Stumpjumper is great fun going down hill, is more poppy and handles quicker but the EXE is so much more fun on the flats and going uphill. I've been riding places that I would never have ridden on my analog. Adding more adventure to my mountain bike ride makes it so worth the extra money to buy one. I will keep my analog bike and still ride from time to time but I don't regret buying the EXE for one second. What great fun!
I agree. I just buy myself a 2022 specialized turbo levo. I do not regret it one bit. It is so much fun. 👍😎
Brought an e- bike around a month ago , my analog bike is in the basement and that’s where it’s staying!!
Analog bikes are just torture.😂
Analog bikes don’t even look like they’re fun to go uphill especially technical. It seems like analog bikes are only good to go downhill.
@@shawnstradwick5637 I agree with you. It’s the slow pace and the pain that I don’t want to go back to.🤣
When your battery dies, then the bike is a pig to ride it's awful.
@@lookwhotalkin It happend to me twice I was having too much fun. I am smarter now and won’t let it happen again.😁
Yes, you are right about if the battery dies. That would suck . I live in Cleveland and I have not been on too many single track trails that are long enough to kill my battery. But if your batteries going to die, try to make sure you are going downhill. Lol.😎
Cool video. I like these comparisons. I'd love to see MTB v EMTB where you ride for like 1.5 hours on technical singletrack on each, then compare distance, HR, and effort. Do more miles balance out the overall effort when compared to an analog bike?
No worries Donnie, i'll try and get it done soon
Great comparison guys, I have both an MTB and an Emtb, I like both and use the MTB as a commuter and some steady off roading, but the best thing is that it shows me how flipping good the Emtb really is. You really do grow complacent that the Emtb is "normal" and can become a chore, if that is happening to you....ride an MTB again for a few days, and you'll love the Emtb as soon as you get on it.
Appreciate it, thanks Duncs
Really interesting results. EMTB highlights what we EMTB riders have known for years, more time to enjoy the sport, more of a challenge to get up rocky tracks instead of walking, more fun for longer. The ex-e does look like a great bike and would love to try it to compare to a full EMTB. Great video Steve.
Nice one, thanks Dave
Great vid Why oh why do us ebikers always feel the need to justify our choices of bike After all it’s just good honest fun 🤩
👍
Thanks for this very informative and entertaining comparison! And a big 👍 to the person who choose the soundtrack!
Hey no worries I'll pass on the message
Since I got my Trek Fuel Ex E I ride at least 50% longer on every ride....Cheers and thanks!
I could watch a Steve video about shoelaces and love it. Just wondering how he would work in the stick time😃
Great little video. I have a friend whom is always on me about fitness aspect related to E-MTB and heart rate zones. Nevermind with a E-MTB it opens up a lot more trails to explore.
Cheers Dave
I have an ebike and an analog. I ride the same trails on both. I find it is two different sports. My goals are different on each. I have a blast on each. On the ebike I look for technical climbs to conquer, on the analog I am looking for fast flowy downs. Something I have noticed is that I think I am faster on the rocky tight downs on the analog. One trail I ride is rocky and windy. I think the lighter bike (analog - 28 lbs, ebike - 50 lbs) is just quicker handling which allows me to go deeper into the corners and pick better lines. The is little to no pedaling on this downhill. I have local flow trails I would not bother to take my ebike on, long gentle climbs and fast flow through the trees. It would be OK on the ebike but not really a challenge. On the analog it is a bit of a fun grunt then a hoot down.
Really fun comparison. Thanks for doing this.
No worries Ross
What was the percentage HR for the full powered bike?
The only reason I have my specialized enduro is for shuttles and bike parks with chairlifts.
2 mins available from a tyre upgrade on the treks!
Climbing hills with normal mtb means suffer and torture 😥🥵😵💫
If you're after heart rate, try almost running out of battery. The anxiety easily gets you up in the triple digits! 😅😂
I don't know.. always thought the idea was to blast DOWN those kind of trails and not up, Fire roads up... Trails down ;-)
But OK, the EMTB's do give a different option in that I must admit, but I still prefer the BIO bike for blasting trails..
Power is the thing , saying that I dug out a singlespeed the other day to go get some milk from the local shop , and no one tried to steal it
Husky more fun factor, u get longer and faster home to your wife and kids :) But keep the enduro, xc, road and commute bike....
I’m curious as to which power mode you used. Given your other videos I’ll assume trail/turbo (some combo). I just bought two emtbs (I curse you for making me spend so much money, but it’s also the best thing I’ve EVER done), A Fezzari Timp Peak and a Levo. I started off riding both of these in Eco mode, thinking I’m getting a stronger workout that way, but just recently realized that Trail mode-though proving more assist-inspires me to fly up the hill. The ascent is now as fun as the descent and I’m pedaling really hard. Another phenomenon is braking while going uphill. Who would have thought that would be a thing? So thank you so much for educating and inspiring me. I’m 58 and live/ride in Los Angeles and Maui (thus two bikes).
Maybe you mentioned it and I just missed it, but, what motor setting did you have the Fuel ExE set on? 1, 2 or 3? I took the Fuel ExE on a demo ride this past weekend and was impressed with it.
Highest power setting
Steve, A very good look at the three & I think that's what riders on a standard mtb, should do ; take a ride on all three & it will blow their mind ! At the difference.
Thanks Andrew, yes huge difference
Hi Steve, good comparison video. Were you using Turbo / max assist on both eBikes ?
Hey thanks...yes max
Both bikes will push to you your limits. An analog, when you're burnt out you will stop and push an ebike you will carry on
Nice ride up the back of the Abbey Hotel, 😊
very good comparison’s for us average Joe’s who haven’t yet completely committed to our purchase of our new ebikes. 😊
It's a big decision right?!
It was. being an ol skool mountain biker of 35 years 😮 I compared it to my first full suspension bike purchase. What a pile of shit that was. My Husqvarna MC has been a blast.
Fair play riding up limekiln on a bike. Do you ride a lot of stuff around there ?
watching this... I'm sure damned glad I moved lock stock and barrel to Mallorca years ago!!!!
I rode my analog bike today and on climbs I hit 180bpm while on my Emtb I would have probably been 165 to 170bpm
Is somebody gonna act surprised here?
If you're not crying and pushing the bicycle along whilst gasping for breath it's just not proper bicycling in my opinion.
There were endless opportunities on that road to be rolling about crying on the rocks, in the mud and stuck into the hedge that the presenter could have chosen to provide the authentic bicycling experience.
The e-bikes both looked just far too enjoyable ! It will never catch on.
🤣
Do you think the downhill times were much different?
Climb 500 feet in a mile on each. Get back to me on that! OTOH, I suppose if I lie down on the floor with my MTB, that would be easier than climbing 100 feet in one mile on an ebike. I'm 70. I'm going to get an EMTB. Not because it's harder! And I'd get a 52 pound full power ebike, but my wife can't put it on the car for me.
Fred Flintstone, Amish bikes
What about hr zone for the full fat?
yeah...big difference.....
Limekiln Wood nr Tintern?
Nice one
Don't call them analogue unless it's analogous to masochism.
Abergavenny??
Braaaaap
Analogue bikes.. What kind of wording is that, are we to expect dmbn (digital mountain bike network) it's ridiculous.
Eyewash!!!!
Three mountain bikes 🤔 or one mountain bike and two motorised mountain bikes.... Motorbikes 🤣
ebikers, always trying to justify having an emtb!
@@downhill64 snobby emtber, nothing new there. Never said I didn't like emtbs!
E bike riders are hooligans I m not fast on the straight lines but I will push you in the wheel on the single tracks at 23 kph 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 and asking myself can it go a little faster plz 😅
Same shit diferened video lol
What's diferened?
