I run a small company called Bicarius, that focuses on battling counterfeits through high level technology and I must tell you that this is just a tip of the iceberg. To give you perspective, as of 2015 1 in every 5 products in Kenya is counterfeit and this is on the lower side. The numbers are worse on ground. You should also know that even pricing and branding between the two is indistinguishable. Based on our market research the numbers are worse especially for foodstuffs, textiles and even beverages.
As a resident of Busia ,born and raised I must say it's a great piece but just a tip of the iceberg of what really goes on here."Magendo" business is complex and risky and for the few who willingly take & face the risk, they make alot of money in a very short time. Then there's also the thing of factions of smuggling cabals (Kuna cabals za sigara, cheap liquor including changaa, cabals za stolen vehicle parts etc) and the lethal of these cabals are the police officers . There's rivalry killing and intimidation too. The funny thing is that residents know and talking about it is something we almost don't do . You guys should do a deeper dive series about the whole thing
karibu kenya tuko na tabia zetu tuuuu the only country of impossibilities to possibility tutapora tutaiba tutaua, mahakama itatuweka huru baadae media itangoja flying squad wafanye majamboz waanze kurepoti fulani wa fulani is missing. karibu kenya hakuna matata
What should an ordinary man do, when the government overtaxed everything? The higher the tax the lesser you get coz people will try to look for alternative.

Hii ya Busia isn't shocking. I expected the deadly one Somali-kenya boarder. Enda Eastleigh and see how they sell medicinal vitamins. Kama Kuna shida Mombasa, do you realize traders will complain but Eastleigh people don't but when their is a fight in Mogadishu kumekauka Eastleigh. I expected that research.
I live in Wajir, 70% of the commodities we use here are from somalia, from sugar, maize flour, cooking oil, Roll ONS(Nivea) soap...almost everything. You can't get packed sugar i.e kabras in this town except from a supermarket and it's very expensive. The get sugar from somalia and it's sold in Uhuru bags and it's very very cheap. That's how porous our borders are.
