    A tough chin IS referring to the ability of not getting KO. We know it's not something you can train which it's why we talk about it so much. Chuck Lidell started his career with the strongest chin we've ever seen and ended it with the weakest, he's ability to take pain didn't decrease, but his brains ability to take shots and not go unconscious decreased dramatically.

      @@lowerclassbrats77it’s probably both but I think it’s related closer to one “big” knockout and the brains reaction to that as opposed to accumulation.

      That just hints that Chito taking all this damage is terrible long term. Would be better for him to get KOd in the first round

    • @OoLiiMiiT3D
      @OoLiiMiiT3D Месяц назад +6

      @@user-zp4xp3hq8iNa its accumulation and age. With age the damage from all the years of taking punches shows up. A big KO shot only adds to the cumulative effect, the same as taking 100+ punches to the head like Chito Vera here. But also genetics and ability to brace for it. Sometimes fighters get knocked out cold by a punch, and then they come back with a granite chin (Glover got brutally knocked out twice within 12 months, and ended his career with taking multiple potential KO shots to the head by Jiri and Jamahal Hill. Hill even kicked him in the head a few times, and Glover only stumbled)
      But it can be unpredictable too. Most people who lose their chin after one KO shot though, its more mental with them, because they fight scared and basically "run" into shots on accident, due to the fear of getting caught, like Volk fought scared against Ilia, after Islam KOd him for example.

    Maybe the fact that he suffered a (probable) fracture is what "saved" him from getting ko.
    The facial bones are constructed in a way in which they can sustain fractures in order to save the brain from trauma. So in this case the (supposed) broken bone might have worked as a cushion for the brain.

    If you think that knee would knock him out on any other occasion then you are not familiar with Chito Vera. He indeed has a chin that is uncommonly sturdy. In EVERY SINGLE MMA fight he’s been in he hasn’t even been put on shaky legs, let alone KO’ed or knocked down. No, you can’t train to achieve a better chin but you are clearly unfamiliar with just how “un-knockoutable” Chito Vera is.

    Wild performance on both ends, thanks for the quick videos. I think it's a combo of both, Vera is likely on the extreme end of the distribution in terms of being able to withstand TBIs without going unconscious relative to the average person (look at his career), but I do agree that similar shots given x different times, a decent proportion of them would KO him.

    If I'm not mistaking there is actually evidence in peer reviewed studies that discusses types of chin and facial structures being able to withstand more force before going unconscious. I believe the study touched on how people who have a facial structure closer to Neanderthals are able to withstand much more than the average facial structure. Just wanted to point that out because I definitely think Vera's facial skeletal structure might have had something to do with him being able to withstand some shots that would usually knock someone else out.

    An underappreciated part of getting hit is your brain knowing that you are going to be hit. If you can prepare or see it coming its much easier than when you aren't prepared. That's why Benoit folded from a seemingly medium punch from Porier and Chito didn't from Sean's knee. Granted that only works until you get hit so much your brain turns off when you're hit, but seeing the punch come is so much better for not getting KOd

    Well, he was mauled for 5 rounds so his durability is something nobody can discuss.

    O’Malley got a lot of shit for not accepting his first loss to Chito, but I always respected that. He was being honest instead of reading from the typical UFC fighter script. “The better man won tonight/ no excuses”- dude, screw all that if you genuinely believe that the other fighter got lucky- I’d rather hear your authentic reaction instead of trying to keep appearances by lying to all of our faces.

    Impact seems not to occur until after the knee was past 90°, wherein the force seems to be less impactful.

    Chito didnt know what round it was. It wouldve been to his advantage to fight backstage for 3 rounds then enter the octagon

    If O'Malley can beat Topuria, maybe we can start to consider him being one of the top 5 fighters in UFC history. And as generous as top 3.
