A incredible feat by a junior to win a GS at just her 2nd major tournament, within 5 mths after finishing her sch exams. The unprecedented run does not change the fact that she was playing mainly lower levels at ITF tournaments. She only joined wta elite tennis after she won the USO. From ITF to wta on her 1st full time pro tour is a huge adjustment. She's going thru transition pains. And her body has to adjust so quickly to top tennis fitness. She's having to learn at every tournament in all her debuts. It's still is incredible that she won all her R1 matches at the 4 GS while many top 10 seeds didn't get passed R1. She will journey on. It's always surprising how many people write comments that are more a reflection on their dissatisfaction with their own lives than on anything Raducanu has or hasn't done. More surprising is their complete lack of awareness of it.
Exactly - some have pure bitterness envy and only a cold vibe in comments on her and most people with any intelligence think...why. Every one of their words is totally negative on her and conveniently omitting where credit is due. I went back and watched highlights of her Wimbledon 2021 and U.S. Open matches. The biggest difference between those 10 matches and all the matches after the USO, is that currently she’s not playing with confidence and attacking short and slow balls. There are now so many eyes on her and much is expected of her, especially due to her high ranking after winning the U.S. Open. This added pressure is causing her to slow down her swing and play safe, because she doesn’t want to hit the ball out. She’s still playing with 100% effort, but her level from playing not to lose is always going to be below that of her full potential. Another player with similar issues as her is Sofia Kenin. I think what Raducanu and Kenin should do is to start seeing a good sports psychologist, in order to learn how to deal with the added pressure of success and to get their old carefree, confident self back and to start having fun playing tennis again.
I think for Emma that’s probably a little premature, if she’s still struggling in a couple years time then maybe, but it’s literally been 12 months since her tour debut. If she didn’t win the US Open nobody would be even remotely concerned, they’d be congratulating her on making top 50 as a teenager. She’s adjusting to the physical requirements on the professional tour, once her body catches up she’ll start going after it more and she’ll be challenging for all the big titles consistently.
If Emma had got knocked out in, say the second or third round of the US Open in 2021, we'd all be looking at a future star develop in the first 18 months of her professional career. She needs time to develop, and the Press need to back down on their high expectations of Emma. Don't forget that she's been plagued by injury, had covid and been stalked by a weird older male
