I lived the same situation that´s relate the song. But, cause my english is very bad (I'm from Argentina) only after a long time I understand the meaning of the song. It's incredible how stories repeat in times and places so distant. I hope Chris know the important of his music.

My interpretation from way back when, and from experiencing a nearly identical situation at the time this song came out, haha. He and the girl have recently broken up. She's gone on a trip to Costa Rica while he's stuck in New Jersey. He's trying to be happy for her, but is experiencing a ton of emotional pain. Most significantly -- he misses her a lot.
