So they originally wanted to call the song suicide however the record label wasn't happy with it. So they changed it to chop suey, i.e., chopping the word suicide in half.
Small correction. they wanted to name it "Self-Righteous suicide." everything else you said was right. Also, the phrase "Self-Righteous Chop Suey-cide" was thrown around very frequently in the days leading up to the songs premiere.
If you really want to dive into Serj's and SOAD's frenzy and genius expression, check out Suggestions by them. Might as well go for the whole first album. Always a pleasure to watch your reactions and analysis. You rock! 🤘❤

After the -14F temps (-25C in non-America) and being near death with a cold, I can listen to a Finnish speaker, say Anna, and by just listening to her conversation from Finnish to English and Back to Finnish is something that I can appreciate the Finnish language even more. I am a classic rock/hard rock genre guy but there is a lot that I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on American artists from the 50s, 60s and 70s as well. Continue the great work.
Chop Suey is about the social repercussions of drug use. Daron, guitarist and the writer of the song, explains in an interview that the expression 'when angels deserve to die' was inspired by the people who say that drug abusers deserve to die and don't aknowledge the problem that they are having, taking away their worth. The song points it out when it says, 'I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide' referring to drug consumption. The 'wake up' part is just random household arguments that revolve around the subject of the song. The 'father' part represents the dispair of living such life.
Yes, but could be a second awakening from the perspective of drugs, seeing the "normal" ones that never used drugs, still asleep. With the obvious chris, musl and heb underlining And deeper than that, that suicide is still about the self, and there´s nothing righteus about it. An escape that is denied and punished by most religions without allowing an understanding of the roots of a primal psicological state.
Mix in the catholic thoughts of being forsaken by god if you commit suicide in any way or form. So people overdosing will end up in hell and some churches and families will not even hold a burial for victims of suicide. I think that this plays a major role in the part of "Father...."
Originally the song was to be called "Suicide", but they switched it to "Chop Suey!" which still retains half of the original title written in different way, "Suey" instead of "Sui"cide. Chop in it's literal sense, chopping something in half, makes the new title a word play on the original one. The food dish itself doesn't have much to do with the song, other than a short clip of Serj eating it in the middle of the music video. Daron, the guitarist, is the one singing the harmonies and backing vocals. Ehdotan edelleen kappaleita Holy Mountains, I‐E‐A‐I‐A‐I‐O, Empty Walls ja Rumi seuraaviksi reaktioitaviksi kappaleiksi :)
Great assessment of SOAD. You are very fair and ultra informative with regards the lyrics and singing style. Enjoyed hearing your wisdom and educated views and angles,.
The diction in your language (Finnish?) is very compelling. You're a vocal coach or something along those lines so it makes sense, but damn your voice is smooth. I love SOAD but I'm coming back just to hear you talk.
Your little twinkles on your keyboard playing A-minor and F-minor and diminished progressions immediately made me think of any number of Opeth songs and how they delightfully illustrate the context of what you're explaining. I'd love to see you work them over on the channel here.
First, I really appreciate your bilingual reviews, and Finnish sounds amazing to me for some reason. Not sure how far into more heavy bands you want/enjoy to review, but I suggest e.g. Harlequin Forest from Opeth. Atmospheric, diverse vocals and good song composition imo
Aerials and Spiders are two amazing songs by them. There's others too but i suggest reacting to those ones first. Also check group named Cannons and their cover of Golden. It's a great one and this band deserves more recognition.
For me this song was always about feeling abandoned by the heavenly father and misunderstood by our earthly father. And just wanting to know why. Love the vocal reaction Anna as always! Great Song choice!
Hi Anna, YT just dropped some of your reactions into my page (finally the algorithm did something right 😉) You could, for sure, give a Master Class in music composition teaching how chord progressions invoke a particular emotional response. Well done woman 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

If you like the melodic parts of System the most you will love Serj Tankians solo stuff. He has more melodic and even classical attempts mixed with rock/metal elements on his solo project. "Elect the dead" is one of my favorite albums still to this day. Songs like "Empty wally", "Sky is Over", "Lie Lie Lie" and "Honking Antelope" are in my rotation list every month.
The "father" part was from when they were recording the album with Rick Rubin, and they were like "we don't know to say for this part", so Rick told Serg to pull a random book off of Rick's extensive book shelf, open to a random a page, and see what it says... It sounds like a passage from a book because it is lol So beautiful 🤘
Just in case somebody missed it, those are quotes from the Gospel, they're Jesus' final words as he's nailed in the cross. I'm not even religious but it's such a powerful image it gives me goosebumps.

Anna, I'm glad that you enjoyed reacting and analysing this. Please could you consider doing an analysis of the band 'Godsmack' the two tracks which I suggest are: "I Stand Alone" and "Voodoo", the reason that I suggested these two is because the lead singer's (Sully) voice is very different on them both.
