It's not classified as strings, but there is a whole debate on why it should that I have no opinion on. Basically, in simple terms, inside a piano are a bunch of strings and then there is hammer like objects lined up at each of those strings. When you press a key, the hammer like thing will hit the string. This is why there is so much controversy about what it classify's as. I hope this helped.
