Universal Power i wholeheartedly agree. I owned 4 of them from the late 90s-2002. I now have a ‘88 560sel, no comparison to those pieces of plastic junk.
According to the Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 page on Wikipedia, there were 317 examples of this special model imported into the U.S. for the 1980 model year, but the MBZ brochure covering that year does not cover it. 576 units were sold here in 1979.
Check out the Waxenberger 300 SEL 6,9 . The only remaining example is in a museum in Finland. The original Finnish owner basically had a road legal "red pig" racing 300 SEL 6,3 (with an enlarged engine). And yes, the Waxenberger "Red Pig" was designed by AMG in 1969. The engine reportedly develops between 380-400hp and the Finnish owner (a wealthy magazine mogul named Urpo Lahtinen) used it to race on ice and also to beat American muscle cars in Finnish drag races in the early 1970's. That car was truly the "first AMG" .

Wow....what a delightful vehicle.......great condition,too....Mercedes had to produce special bumpers for US specifications,otherwise they were not allowed to go into US sale. But what the heck,the bumpers look good enough,right?
