  • In this week's episode, I'm talking about how I became a picky thrifter! What is a picky thrifter you may ask...well today you are going to find out what happened to make me have a different mindset on thrifting. Do I still have my days of cartfuls of goodies at a thrift store...yes but I'm still a bit pickier rather than trying to rescue every single item I find!

Awesome podcast! My husband made me one of those racking systems for all my bins. I do have the 27 gallon black bottom/yellow lid bins from Sam's Club. This has worked out so well. I can now easily access everything...no more having to unstack to get to the bin you need.

Grest video, Sonnet! I can relate on a personal level! During a postpartum depression, I couldn't motivate myself to clean, and decided that I could do anything for 10 minutes. So I started with scrubbing my kitchen floor. By the time you do that for 10 minutes, you might as well finish the job, and this turned the tide for me. I would work on something for 10 minutes each day. Before long I was back on the ball. And this was before I became a psychology major! As a practicing psychologist and professor later on, I used behavioral contracts all the time. WIth a very depressed client I got them to agree to do three small things every day. Example: empty the kitchen wastebasket, mail a birthday card, wipe off the kitchen counter. For them at the time, these acts were hugely significant. After a couple of weeks, they would be in "three things" mode and be getting moving in general. With grad students, I divided them in groups of three and had them set up a three week behavioral contrace. Key things: 1) the behavior had to be clearly defined, e.g., a 20 minute walk three times during x period of time; 2) a time limit (I had them do it for three weeks but length depends on the nature of the behavior in question; 3) an extrinsic reward at the end, not just the satisfaction in herent in the walk (like a new pair of boots after meeting the contract--something extra, added--an actual real reward). The hardest thing for them was being really, really specific about the behavior. People would try to put in, "eat better" and I made them get it down to something like pack a healthy lunch for work three days each week. You have set up a behavioral contract for yourself (end of summer) and it is specific--empty the greenhouse. You will at that time owe yourself a reward! A real one, not just the relief that you will be able to entertain us in your yard in October! When some of your members did the thrifting hiatus (which was a behavioral contract) I did the same thing, thrifting only for globes and bookends, which are hard to find and sell wll for me at Best of Janesville. Looking forward to next podcast! I love The Eclectic Cottage and agree that everything she does is top notch. Such a sweet person, too. I could go on and on about motivational strategies, but that is enough from me! Pat from Whitewater

Was this ever timely! Wow…just today I ran over to Menards and bought a bunch of shelves. Now that I do have a booth…the garage has been bad…we can’t get a car in there😳. So last fall we put up a plastic shed on the side of the house. I refuse to pay a storage rent. Hope it pays for itself eventually🤣🤣🤣. But it’s been a life saver! I don’t have a basement (which is actually a good thing). I didn’t even know this was going to be your topic! The other thing about being a picky thrifter …I will only buy furniture (and other stuff) to paint that is in really good shape and sturdy. Got some things going to the curb tomorrow! Not gonna waste my time fixing stuff! So it was good to hear how you got organized! Thanks so for the motivation😁

Thanks so much for sharing this. This has been my goal for this year also. I just got a storage unit and I have all my Farmers Market Pop=up stuff in one corner. Goal was to organize and store my other inventory for my booths there too, just havent gotten to it yet. You have inspired me. What size totoes did you use. Some of my stuff is kind of big for the medium sized ones?

I am curious, do you use any kind of inventory, or pos software to keep track of your purchases and sales?

I don’t keep track of my thrifted items with any software or inventory method, but I use my online store to track all of my products. 😊

Have you seen Lisa on Our Shabby Cottage? Great crafter and thrift flipper too! I’ve visited her store and she is very organized. Love your suggestions about hoards and inventory. Thank you for sharing. My husband and I moved out of our downtown after being there for almost 30! So squeezing all our hoard into a smaller space is ongoing. We need all the help we can get! Thank you again!!

I agree--Lisa is really talented. Different style from me, but I always watch her. She is inventive. And, like The Eclectic Cottage, I think she has a store.
