I once got to play this song with Dweezil Zappa and two drummers. 8 of the greatest minutes of my life! Dweezil had a Music Boot Camp in upstate NY 5 times over a few years. He called it Dweezilla. I was at every one. Some amazing connections and some amazing experiences that will last a lifetime.

That was a bass guitar, in the hands of Jack Bruce, most famous for being one third of the band "Cream" with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. The basic tracks were recorded at Electric Lady Studios, NYC November 8, 1972 Engineer: Dave Whitman. FZ-lead guitar, Tony Duran-rhythm guitar, Jack Bruce-bass, Jim Gordon-drums.

This began as a studio jam with Jack Bruce on bass, Jim Gordon on drums, and Frank on guitar. Then Frank did his editing/overdubbing/production magic. I don’t know if Tony Duran’s rhythm guitar was on the initial session, or added later. I think Frank’s narrow, frequency choked guitar tone is a response to Bruce’s fuzz bass tone, which covered a lot of frequencies! Great playing from them all, whatever the circumstances!

I listened to Frank Zappa so much as a teen, I took his music for granted.
Thanks John, and patreons, for bringing it back, to my old ears.

It took some time and effort, but I have a copy of every FZ album on CD, a large number on vinyl and the ZAPPA family trust keeps them coming.

"Grand Wazoo" (the title track) needs some Air-Time. The entire album is as good as Sleep Dirt, and tells some great Musical stories without using any words.

I believe this was a studio jam with Frank, Jack Bruce(bassist from Cream known for his improv skills) Jim Gordon on drums, and a second guitarist whose name I can't remember. Inmo, Jack steals the show here. His fuzz bass rips our faces off right after the riff/theme is established, then its all jam mayhem until Gordon's drum break brings us back to order(lol) and they bring it back home on the riff. Brutal! Great jam!

I read somewhere that Jack was asked if he wanted to jam by either Tony or Jim and when he showed up they didn't have a bass amp, and he didn't bring one, so that's Jack playing thru a couple of cranked acoustic guitar amps. Frank once said that he didn't care for Jacks busy bass style.
