Hyper V Virtual Hard Disk Administration | Expand Shrink Compact & Convert [HYPER V TUTORIAL 05]

This video is all about Hyper V Virtual Hard Disk Administration. This is the 5th practical video on Microsoft Hyper V series on Windows Server 2019. This video includes all the available actions which could be applied on a Microsoft Hyper V Virtual Hard Disk.
Expanding:
------------------
The term "Expand" is enough to understand what you are going to do. Expanding a Virtual HDD increases the net size of a Virtual HDD.
Shrinking:
----------------
This action will automatically be visible if you've previously expanded your Virtual HDD. Here also the term "Shrink" is enough to understand what you are going to do. Shrinking a Virtual HDD reduces the size of a Virtual HDD but you can never set the new reduced size that is lower than the actual size of that Virtual HDD.
Compacting:
--------------------
1st of all Compacting does not mean disk Shrinking because shrinking reduces the net size of a Virtual HDD whereas compacting does not modify the net size of a Virtual HDD. Compacting reduces the physical disk space that is consumed by a Virtual HDD file by removing the empty blocks. Another thing you have to keep in mind that Compacting is applicable to a dynamic Virtual HDD, not to a Fixed size Virtual HDD .
Converting:
------------------
Converting straightly means to convert a .vhdx file to .vhd file and vice-a-versa. Disk conversion is applicable to the Windows & Linux Virtual Machines on Hyper-V with thin or thick both disk type. After converting a disk you can attach it to a different & existing VM and you can also use it to create a new Virtual Machine.

Thanks for the query. Yes it's kind of Disk defragmentation, applicable to the physical disk where the Virtual HDD file is residing. Compacting is processed by removing the empty blocks of the physical disk.

Is there any way to shrink the virtual hard disk size than original size. I have virtual HDD and that size need to reduce. I need to increase the size of host PC of virtual HDD.

Hi !! Thanks for your query. Shrinking a Virtual HDD is always applicable to that VHD which was previously expanded. Watch @4:52 Min for detailed info.

@@TechAreaNetwork I came here to see the conversion from thick to thin (vhd to vhdx) but did not see this in the video. Do you have a video on that?
I have a VM and the size is getting out of hand despite there being space available that windows should see, I believe converting it will fix the issue
