The biggest fault in Joey and Garnt's argument is that they always use themselves as an example for people "addicted" to gacha when clearly they know they are capable to spend and have enough willpower to stop. It's like they're trying their best not to make it seem like it's bad because they're not really addicts in a defense where they should be looking into those who are definitely addicted to gacha -- which also is hard to defend because bottomline *gambling = bad*.

Hey, I'm a game design student and i've interned at a couple of studios, one of them was developing a gacha game. Let me just say, they have entire teams dedicated to making the gacha system maximize profits. The tactics used are pretty disgusting. For example, we were asked to mathematically determine what rate for pulls/pricepoint for premium currency/scarcity of premium currency to implement based on the total development costs minus advertising. When we brought the rates to upper management they said "great now cut it in half, then use those rates for promotional events." It's like price gouging but only we know the fair prices.
Double Edit: To those asking for the essay link, it was submitted to Ontario Tech University, and is technically their IP until I graduate, posting the link online before then could be some kind of academic dishonesty so I'm a little hesitant to, might revisit this comment later when I know it's safe to.
Edit: Developers can set their pricepoints to whatever they think is fair. That's okay, people need to eat after all. The problems I find are the methods used to drive sales.
Limited time banners cause Fear Of Missing Out as well as dailies, studies have shown that creating false scarcity will increase profits, the problem is that the product ( a 5 star unit in this case) doesnt become any better by adding a time limit, but we put a premium on the time limited banners. We're charging for the priviledge of using the limited time banner rather than making it cheaper because its limited. Also refer to the Skinner-Box theory if you'd like to learn more about the fundamental brain hacking gacha games entail.
I could write an entire 40 page essay on the topic of monetisation and microtransactions in modern game design, in fact I've done so already but this comment is a bit too long for youtube as is.

Joey is exactly the type of person Connor is talking about at the end with the Mario Kart situation. On one hand he complains about how he won't even start certain games because he hates losing so much but on the other hand says he doesn't "look at games that deep" when Connor talks about improving to prevent losing. You can't be salty that you lose when you don't put any effort in to improve and that's exactly Connor's point, unfortunately Joey and Garnt were too caught up in making jokes and deflecting to understand what Connor was actually trying to say.

I agree on the most part with Connor, but in one aspect I am the exact person Joey talked about. You know, I love games since I was I kid, and ever since I got a computer and some games on it, I've been wasting my life on them, and I'm the kind of person who grinds, so like I labbed fighting games (and got to the point of even being invested on community aspects of a bunch of competitive games), and to this day I waste my time on them, but I have some sort of wall preventing me to get any kind of result in games no matter how much time I spend on it. I remember spending days of ingame time learning to do all kinds of stuff, watching tips and pro games and getting all that knowledge and practice, and I would still get beat by people who never touched the game.
Everybody's different, so everyone is bound to have a personal experience no matter how similar the situation is.

The reason why Joey and Garnt's counter seems so bad is because they don't have much to say. Not that they don't have stuff to say but rather they don't have much to convince Connor that they agree with him but his solution isn't the win-all that he likes to think it is.
Connor suggest a form of gacha police but the other two said that how would the gacha police know you are not addicted? They answer, it can't BUT Joey and Garnt agrees that it still should be implemented as something is better than nothing. But Connor kept going as if Joey and Garnt doesn't agree.
And Connor's solution of the game asking you how much your limit is, is a self-regulatory measure which Joey pointed out. Joey points out that self-regulation only works if the person wants to be regulated, which most addicts won't do.
You seriously think a gacha addict that wants to gamble would honestly put a limit for himself? Not really, which again the others point out. But Connor doesn't seem to believe that and think that putting it will solve everything.
So the other two boys are the one ended up taking to a wall and not the other way around like most people think.

He was talking about how a lot of people legitimately can’t control themselves and those are the people that the protections need to be made for while Garnt and Joey were just saying that they can personally control themselves or are fine with their decisions which wasn’t the point. It also seemed like they didn’t acknowledge that there is a large group of people that don’t know what they are getting into and predatory mechanics have a much higher potential of hurting them than someone who knows what they’re playing like Garnt or Joey

I never really knew just how bad someone who's truly addicted was until I met this guy off of discord who whales pulls until he gets the SSR shit and then posts the salt to "flex". He's not even genuinely flexing, most of the games he touches he barely understands the mechanics. I even caught him not understanding how rates worked and just pulled off standard banners, just because the banner featured a character he liked (but he could've saved for a banner with better rates, while also getting that character with pity). Worst of all, it's not like he's some rich guy and actually afford to continue; he just lives with his parents (which is fine) and works the usual day job, but it doesn't seem like he's saving anything for his future; that's the worrying part.
Everyone's worried about him, and a few people did try to help but honestly, we're all just waiting until the day he crashes. He's never rude to anyone and it'd genuinely hurt a lotta folks if he just keeps going with his addiction.

      @aratafreecs3445 2 года назад +8

@@dasherplayz4471 Referring to the original argument, my problem lies within wanting to learn something, and after trying it out once, immediately dropping even the slightest bit of wanting to improve on that. I didn't want to bring up the whole argument again and shortened it a bit, given my phrasing without immediate context, that might not have been obvious.
You or anyone can play anything as casually as you want, but complaining that you're not good enough but not trying to improve on the other hand, is something I won't accept from anyone.
That being said, what's necessary for me to enjoy a game is a challenge of some sort. I get people not wanting to play inherently hard to play games, there's nothing wrong with that. But not having even a bit of a challenge in any game makes it immediately boring for me and I'll quit very fast. I am not playing a game to get the feeling of being an NPC by having a difficulty comparable to reading subtitles while watching a show. Might as well do that then, I'd get more enjoyment out of that.
I know you didn't say anything about the point I'm going to make, but the mindset of that and playing without wanting to improve are on the same page for me. I do not understand how people don't want to improve their skills in a game in any way from the start. If you start a game just to have fun and don't want to put in any effort whatsoever, you are in my opinion not going to have fun. With zero will to improve and very little skills in a game, you're just going to get beaten up, lose matches, everything like that. Where lies the fun in that? I do not enjoy losing, and I can't imagine anyone that does, without having any benefit from that.
There are not even really games you can play without any will to put in any effort. Story games? Can't solve puzzles. Can't beat anything in combat, except there's a baby difficulty. Shooters? Get shot, no kills for you. MOBAs? Die. Grey screen is all you see. Sandbox games? Can't build anything that works without trying to figure out the mechanics. Racing games? Bump into walls, lose every race. RPGs? Can't find any item you need.
What do people who play like this enjoy out of that? Do they just quit the game after the tutorial?
I'm sorry, but I don't get the appeal of that at all. I don't get the argument. My mind is not able to understand how anyone could have fun like that.

People don't always play to win or lose, they play to have fun, and winning is not always fun. Sandbox games? They just wanna build some structures complicated or not and the only way to win is killing the end dragon. What you wanna speedrun minecraft? After beating the end what else is fun in the minecraft world (not servers) since there is nothing to win according to your logic. Fps? You just wanna shoot people and you have fun because you are competing with people even without a winners mindset? I lose rounds more so than I win? So what, why should I care game points or internet points or kd ratios.
Fighting games? I just wanna fight as my favorite character and just fight with other people. You don't play to win, you play to have fun. Winning is not always fun, if someone makes a game where you win by pressing a button is it fun? Its facing challenges whether you win or not.
Losing without any benefits? You know Winning also doesn't net you benefits except for the satisfaction of winning a video game. And I will ask you why winning in a video game is fun? Overcoming useless challenges that only waste time and brings little to no benefits in your life other than the satisfaction that you won something(useless unless you are one of the top players of fighting games, mobas, etc...). If people have fun by winning then why not study hard and "win" in school, win in your academic life by being put in the no.1 university. The same could be said about sports, are you winning? What do you contribute to society? Enjoyment? The internet or media has got that covered.
So why would you feel good to win? Overcoming something? But what if you are having fun because you are challenging that obstacle in a game, is that called fun?

Gacha is actually more dangerous than gambling.
    1. Access. Being on your phone the access is unbelievable, not to mention most casinos require IDs for age limits and such.
    2. Odds. Imagine a casino with gacha rates...
    3. Gacha is not alone. Systems like those apps for fantasy football, lottery and equivalent mediums are all the same.
Truth is, you need legislation to regulate these things. (Thank you Europe for giving us gacha rates lol). However, in the long run these systems that exploit human weakness will never be gone, whenever they are struck down they transform and persist.

God, Garnt and Joey's commitment to wanting to just make jokes rather than engage with Connor's argument about giving up after one try was incredibly frustrating to listen to. I get it, these are well crafted jokes for someone who is upset about not winning. But Connor isn't talking about that and I can just feel the irritation from him as he tries to clarify the same point over and over again.
And Gacha mechanics should be heavily regulated or just removed altogether. I'd rather just have games increase to $70 than be nickel and dimed to unlock the whole experience. And if you don't nickel and dime, what's the alternative? Wait 2 years before you get the character you wanted since day one? It's just a ridiculous system that we've all convinced ourselves is alright.
I think what Connor was talking about with fans getting upset with criticism of gacha were all the loot box apologists swearing up and down that it wasn't gambling. The two aren't much different and you hear very similar excuses for the existence of each.

God, this episode was hard to watch.
Starting off with Joey's r/forexposure-level comments on the artist industry, like complaining about artists with small portfolios setting high prices (why do you care? If they're too high, no one will buy and they'll lower them, let them do what they want), and that artists who aren't super skilled yet aren't considered "artists" (if you do art you're an artist, that's it).
Then of course, the gacha. I recommend you guys watch Jim Sterling's videos on the gacha industry- it is blatantly predatory towards people with addiction problems, and needs regulation big time, no excuses.

It's a straight up fact that gacha companies, hell games companies in general, have done extensive research in the best way to psychologically manipulate people into spending money, and to keep them spending money. What your do with your own money is your responsibility, but any reasonable person would take into account the effect of having someone constantly whispering 'SPEND MONEY' in your ear every moment you play.
Joey and particularly Gigguk here come across as two guys utterly failing to empathise because they have money to burn and aren't on that hook. Connor may not have a perfect solution to the problem, but at least he doesn't act like it isn't there. It's a shame that they didn't even touched the part when you remove the gacha element, the gameplay and the story. They haven't realized that 80% of the players that stick to those games are non-spenders. Because they enjoy the gameplay/lore.
But yeah, I kinda agree with your sentiment. Especially recently with Genshin's Zhongli debacle, you can see that spenders are really out of touch with the f2p/low spenders community. They didn't know that people who optimize and budget the little they have exists even.

It's like saying someone who's a musician, whose life clearly revolves on a specific field, just try out sports, something completely to what they know, and tell them to get good, where what they want out of it is try it out. So they're point in not wanting to get into competitive games is not invalid tho. Just cause someone's not that into something, doesn't make them less of who they are.

In Belgium the shop content in Gacha games is blocked because it's considered gambling. They say it's to "protect" the users, yet you can just go online and gamble your money away on the lottery (because it's government owned and apparently that's allowed). Anyway, my point is that I think people should be able to spend their money on whatever they want. Gambling remains the same whether you want to gamble in Gacha games to win a png waifu or you want to gamble to win money. It's hard to draw the line somewhere because let's say you block off the shop in gacha games, why is it that I can still go to the shop and buy Pokemon booster packs. Isn't that the same? If I'm not mistaken the booster packs don't even give you the pull rates. In the end I think it comes down to awareness and self control.

    • @NothingXemnas

"Awareness and self-control" is why driving and firearm license require courses and tests. And why medicaments, alcohol and tobacco require some restrictions. No one is prohibited from getting access to them if they are within the requirements! Your example of prohibition is ridiculous, that is true, there are drug addicts anywhere in the planet, even where such drugs are illegal.
However, your argument about double standard as your point ("if Pokemon TCG is not restricted but gacha is, then lift the restrictions on gacha") is just as bad! If for everything where double standards happen, you should double down, then legalize abortion and heroin!
At least tell me WHY you think gambling should be unrestricted, or at least why you didn't think of soft restrictions (implement caps on expenditure instead of straight out prohibition, limit to X number of accounts per IP to cut some of the account rerolls, implement cooldowns on microtransactions...)

@DEEPANKAR VERMA while i would agree drifting is most fun part of mk, that's not his point. His point is that he doesn't like when someone quickly gives up on a thing they themselves wanted to do. I think the problem was why the argument didn't go well was because he used mk. For a real life example, let's say somebody says they want to learn Japanese, then you try to teach them or recommend a teacher and the person gives up after the first lesson, you would be annoyed. For me, and i think Conner, this example and mk example is the same feeling, though of course mk example i would be way less anoyed then in my example. In both example a person gives up, before even reaching a point he could have seen himself getting better. It doesn't matter for me that in one example it was a game in other was a language, it doesn't matter on what thing a person gives up, the thing that is annoying is that somebody would give up on their wants, so quickly.
Edit: I know i have this opinion due to my personality, if i want to do something, i want to give it my 100% i want to be invested in it, because giving less just feels like then doing the thing is pointless. Someone giving up quickly means they weren't giving 100%, they where not invested in doing what they said they wanted to do

As someone who's into racing games, I completely agree with Connor's take on competitive gaming. Every match/race, you learn something new and improve, and as you improve you are paired with better people, and have matches that are more challenging, and if you have a healthy mindset, you'll learn to appreciate your losses and the skill of you oponent. The wins also feel much better after a challenging match/race.

  • @saarthel8532

About gatcha regulation and seeing the appeal of them, I'm with Connor 100%.
About gaming philosophy, I'm with Joey and Garnt. I often have the same kind of debates with my friends about gaming. I hate challenge and competition. They tried to make me play LoL and I hated it. They said I had to learn the game while playing for at least 30hrs before being good enough to fully enjoy the experience and that's already more than how much time and effort I'd put in the game in the first place. When I have 30min to play a game, I prefer progressing through a quest in a rpg, exploring more of an open world, making a run in a rogue like than doing a game of LoL and knowing half way that I'm gonna loose anyway because the other team got more kills and it'll be a long and painly game all for nothing.
But to come back on the gaming mentality, I'd say I like playing a game when it's fun. Competitive games have a cycle of you have to progress to be able to maybe win, while the games I enjoy are more like "you are wining isn't great? Let me show you that other cool thing you can do. Whoa! That part was harder, but you did it with the new powerful trick I showed you. Wanna learn more?" Easy to learn, long to master.
Note to all the rpg/character progression/buying upgrades kind of mechanics, it's great because if you are good, you'll win and if you're bad, it's easy to get the xp to make it possible for you to win. It's like a secret difficulty selection. The only thing I have to complain is when excessive grinding becomes mandatory to win or to get something specific.

as an artist, I understand people "overcharging" or wanting a cut if you are profiting from their art. you're paying for the work that goes into it, not the quality. when I first started out, I was charging like $20 for art that would take HOURS, and because I have like no concept of time, I wasn't even really aware of it. I started doing speedpaints, which is where you record your entire drawing session and speed it up so it's really satisfying to watch, and I've had some that legit took 10 hours. if you make yourself known enough that people will buy your art, most people are willing to pay more for your art because they like your style or specific things you draw, etc, so unless you're JUST starting out, no artist should undercharge. screw it, no one should have to work UNDER minimum wage just because they're not the best at something. and I'm disabled so I literally can't get another job, so I was living off of commissions at one point so I really couldn't afford to undercharge.
and I guess this isn't necessary per se, but I feel like it's just morally correct to give a cut to your artist when you use their art for merch or something. like, how much work did you put in just to sell some t shirts or whatever, especially compared to an artist you paid to spend hours coming up with a design for you? yeah most artists will just say that once you've paid for it, it's your art so do whatever you want with it. but it just feels wrong to be getting 100% profit from something like merch and not give a cut to the artist when it's THEIR art that you are profiting off of, not just your brand otherwise it would just be your face on a t shirt or something. I mean, I would be too shy to straight up tell someone who is commissioning me that they're not allowed to sell my art without giving me a cut, so it's really nice when the client offers it first lol.
not saying any of the guys in trash taste undercharge artists or anything, but artists just do not get enough appreciation in general. people who don't do art don't fully realize just how much skill and time goes into it.

Point 3 is very opinionated though, and while in casinos you might earn back money, in gachas, you earn back 'joy'. It all depends on how much a person value the character to how much a person values money. Just like a billionaire might be willing to spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars on some painting, while a more average person wouldn't spend more than a thousands bucks on it. Not a good analogy, but some may have as much fun in gambling for a character as someone has going out drinking. Gacha also depends on the game as some are much worse than others. In Genshin for example, you get a guarantee at some point ($300-400 worth) to get the promoted character, while in other gachas like FGO, you could spend $10k and still get nothing out of bad luck (saw someone actually spend a grand to get a single copy once).
