At first listen, it seems like Howard is abusing Gilbert. In reality, Gilbert is absolutely skull-humping Stern. It's next level. It doesn't give Stern an inch. And knowing how manipulative and insecure Stern is, it drives him mad that he can't control or threaten Gilbert. These clips make you love Gilbert even more.
I've heard Howard and Robin break down and piss off every one, Artie, Fred, Sal, Ronnie, Jackie, KC, Tom C ect. Gilbert just completely owns them and never falls for any of the traps.
@@warshipsatin8764 He did this almost every appearance. Ask Gilbert mundane questions about his family, his hopes and dreams, or even his kids. And Gilbert always just laughed. THAT was the joke. Gilbert's subversiveness is what made him so good. And Howie was playing the straight man.
I just wanted to share my Gilbert eulogy with some people who might feel the same as I do: In case you were unaware, the world lost an amazing person this week. Someone who has brought more laughter to my life than anyone else. Gilbert Gottfried passed away this week at the far too young age of 67. I imagine right now you’re thinking “Gilbert?? The parrot from Aladdin??” Yes. That same person. If that is the only way you know of him, then words cannot express the emptiness inside your soul that you’re not even aware of. Like most of you, that bird was my strongest impression of him (though I had first seen him in Problem Child) & it stuck with me throughout my life. I can still recall the time my cousin Jake and I were discussing who would replace Jackie on the Howard Stern Show and Jake saying that Gilbert was on the short list. My first thought “The parrot from Aladdin??! Wtf?!” But Jake assured me that once I heard Gilbert on the show, I would understand. I can’t recall the first time I heard him on the Stern Show, but good god was Jake right. His impressions of old Hollywood (Johnny Carson, Paul Lind, Groucho Marx, etc) saying the most horrible and racist things you could ever imagine still make me laugh today. He wasn’t just offensive though, he was sharp as a tack. I still remember one episode where Howard called him very early. At the end of the interview he apologized for waking Gilbert up so early. Without missing a beat Gilbert replied: “Oh no, I get up and run 5-6 miles every morning.” in such a serious matter of fact way that I almost rolled my car. The guy could barely walk let alone run. People who often heard him on Stern made the assumption that he was racist. As I never knew him personally, I can’t say one way or the other. But as someone who has pushed the envelope of what is appropriate his entire life, I don’t think he was. You see, Gilbert understood he was annoying. He owns a mirror (a gift I’m sure) & has ears (those came free with birth) and understood what other people saw. I imagine his thought was “I’ll give ‘em something to really be annoyed by.” The reaction people had to all the offensive stuff he said, the anger, the discomfort, the awkwardness, were worth more than the applause of the largest crowd to him. He cheapness was legendary. And it was said he would do anything offered to him as far as work. The only thing he ever said he turned down was I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. He said the money wasn’t worth it. He did virtually everything from the Aflac duck to the voice of the red man seatbelt symbol in your car for a public safety commercial. The fact is though, Gilbert valued one thing more than money: being himself. The proof is that he came on the Howard stern show 122 times and many of those times he lost sponsorships due to what he said. He lost Miracle Whip, Pop Tarts, & many more. All because he said things these companies found offensive. If all he cared about was money, I doubt he would have come to that studio and made me laugh until I cried 122 times. I imagine he’d have cut his losses. But not Gilbert. He never quit. He was truly one of the greatest fighters for free speech I’ve ever known because he valued it more than money, success, or being liked. As he once said: “Free speech is important to me because as Jew, I don’t want to pay for it.” And a shout out to Disney for NEVER FIRING HIM! That’s right, the most family friendly brand on earth stuck by him through everything. He did parrot stuff up until they changed Aladdin. I urge anyone who reads this to google Gilbert Howard Stern and listen to any long clip. I Cannot promise it will change your life, but it will change your opinion of Gilbert. About a month after 9/11, there was a roast of someone in nyc. As the presenters came up and did their best to make the crowd laugh, it was clear nobody was in any sort of comedic mood. Many had lost loved ones and friends, and all of them had just seen their city changed forever. Up into this mood of doom stepped Gilbert. His very first joke was this: “I wanted to get a flight to LA, but they said I’d have to stop at the Empire State Building!” The crowds mood turned dark and they began to boo. Gilbert launched into a famous joke know as the Aristocrats. (If you’re so devoid of comedic history as to not know that joke, there’s a whole fucking movie about it with Gilbert.) The version he did was fantastic and literally brought the house down. There was not a dry eye in the house, & for the first time I almost a month, they were all tears of joy. As one comic once said: “When Gilbert digs himself into a hole, he doesn’t try to climb out. He keeps digging until he gets to China and comes out the other side.” What Gilbert had done that night was amazing. Someone had to make that joke. Somebody had to be that bad guy so people could move on in some fashion. That’s who Gilbert was. He said: “Let that person be me. I’m happy to do it.” I’m not saying that was his intention. I don’t believe he intended to go out and heal the world through comedy. But that’s why it was so amazing, he was just doing what he did every day. So that’s why I’m sad. I’ve lost a hero, a mentor, & brother in arms. And I’ve also lost the greatest source of laughter in my life. There will never be a day I don’t quote one of the things he said, they’ll never be a day when memories of his impressions don’t bring me joy, & I’ll never see a bird without imagining it’s voice to sound like his. Goodbye Gilbert. I miss ya.

Howard really was always a shallow, and vapid person. If I had a dime for every time he asked Gilbert did he have any siblings, I wouldn't have that much, but I'd still have too much money. Shallow and vapid people don't take in any information they're presented with, because they're too self consumed with themselves. Having said that, I appreciate Howard for having Gilbert on the show for as much as he did. I also resent Howard for suddenly banning Gilbert from his show, then giving a ham-handed "eulogy" for the great man when he left this earth far too soon.
throughout the years, it always seemed like howard never gave a shit about gilbert, or anyone else really. the only reason he even visited gilbert in the hospital was for the show material it provided
God Damn... this dude wins a contest by imitating Howard and all Stern can do is ogle the Jew broad from the station who comes with him... it's like 20 minutes into him being there were he's like... "oh you don't just look like me you do an impression too?"
