I like the advice about staying calm to stay married. I can see this leading to a helluva fight if you roll into a camp late with tired kids and a cranky wife.

Another great video Ronny, thank you. We have had a couple of Camper trailers over the past 15 years, soft floor and now we have rear fold hard floor. We actually find the camper trailer brilliant for an over night stop. We just don't put the annexe / awning up for the one night. The great thing we find is we can be set up within 1 minute of parking up, beds are already made, ready to cook and have a drink :) cheers Tony

Oh forgot to mention we also have a couple of kids to, these days they are sleeping in a double swag, otherwise they just sleep in sleeping bags on the floor of the camper trailer.

Great video. I know the experience exactly! We have a semi off-road camper which suits long term stays. We hit the trails and go back to camp at night. I like the idea of setting up a rooftop camper or oztent for short term with a kitchen in the back of the wagon. Opens up a few options for overnighters and day trips too.

"Have a beer before you start setting up" is a number one mandatory camping rule.
It is seriously a saver of friendships and marriages, never skip this step.
Also most places that sell campers will also hire them out. It is a big commitment and even if you have cash coming out of your ears so money is no problem you still need too decide what type of trailer suits your needs. Even just finding out how your vehicle (and you the driver) goes towing a trailer is worth the effort of hiring one first.

Awesome tip about having a can before you set up.
Yes, many people don't realise the work it takes to set up and pack up
I always ask Camper Trailer people questions after their trip away, as they generally have a different opinion than they had prior to going away :)

When you buy camp trailer try & get the same axle & wheel size as the car that you are towing with, less spares to carry then & the trailer will follow your car tracts making towing easier, especially on the beach.

great looking kids, they will remember these great trips! I relish my regular trips with my family and have tried to do the same with mine. I grew up sleeping in a cabin tent even in the middle of the winter with snow and all. Despite most dragging trailers and generators I prefer my wall tent and wood burning stove. Only modern addition is a foldable solar panel for those family members who like their devices (mostly for pictures and videos). Today we did a beach trip and it was a great escape from the stressful city life. What do you do for bathing? We use a camp shower which minimizes the discomfort brought on by saltwater. Great job, keep up the great work!

Hey Ronnie I love your advice about renting first. I like to Overland but for overnight camping the pop up tent trailer really stinks. I rented a couple times last year and this year not at all. I am taking my boys 11-13 for a trip to Michigans UP Drummond island and we'll be tenting and wheeling. But for base camp Ops there is nothing better than a little camper, spot on bro'.

1 more tip I will add if going up north you might be fine with this or similar setups though if planning trip where you be in a a forest setting i do recommend that having a caravan with a support skeleton it might save your life having lived around the mundaring shire there a places where there are trees prone to throwing branches and alas with the support nothing but what i would class as tent type poling structure can be wiped out such limbs falliing on your popup tent camper..
I also don't recommend popup anything within anything classed as a caravan or camper trailer for safety reasons..
If I was going to design something to tow behind any cruiser I would use the chassis rails from the ute variant as a starting base and a full tray base that way you have you have something that fits the same wheels and profile as the cruiser..
I would also suggest where you instructional documents have a sealed water proof document and have 3 copies 2 on paperback and 1-2 pdf's stored on tablets/laptops/desktops..
also note anything you have additionally installed must have documented maintenance procedures as you never know when you may have to do a temp repair to get yourself to a mechanic..

I feel like it really varies on what type of trip you're going on and how many people are going. Like if it were only me and one other person in one 4wd is settle for a rooftop tent or a ground tent. With the rooftop you'd have to pack it up for the day trip portion. So like I said it does vary on what type of trip you take

Also do you think that being not used to camping out of the trailer may skew your impression? We found with our camper trailer the first few trips took awhile to setup and pack up, the last big trip we did with a number of 1 night stops we had setup/packup at around 15-20mins.

When I was a kid my parents used to take us camping with one of their friends from work. The husband of the family that came always had to have the fanciest shit, he used to upgrade his camper each year. All I learned from that was that they are an utter nightmare to deal with. Especially if you get to camp late and need to set up in the dark. Really find them more complicated than just pitching a tent.
They have their plus sides but I feel they have more cons. Really feel like they'd make you more tied down instead of being able to explore.
Just a note depending where you are the kitchen could be a really big mistake.
From what I learned it was always keep your food and sleeping area separate. Cook down wind and at least 15ft away from where you will be sleeping. hang all food from a tree at least 15 ft high. This really only applies to places with bears though. I've been to sites where they've had black bears, not big ones but still they tore open someone's SUV like a can of beans.

I have to disagree with one of his comments. Hard floor camper trailers are extremely fast to setup when compared to others ( soft floor especially ). They are ideally suited from "one night stays". For example, the new Cub Frontier forward fold camper trailer takes less than 2 minutes to setup, less awning & canvas extensions. How much faster & less hassle do you want?

Great video. What do you recommend for a family for 4 for quick set up and set down for quick over nighters AND Basecamp. Is there such a camper that’s not too pricey?

  • @-ZELTHELD-
    @-ZELTHELD- 7 лет назад +2

Good advice, but I cannot agree with your conclusion in base camping only, because then you need to let people know the alternative for 4 people !!! What solution is there to sleep every day somewhere else with fast setup and break down. Any good tent will need several pegs (my biggest of 6 stormtents has up to 65 pegs), you may need to set up kitchen in the tent as well, get power to the tent, etc. The only fast tent I know is a Quechua 4 person plastic instant throw tent. Of course you can put pop up tents onto your car for 4, say 2 for each 2 persons, but let's face it, in rain no real living and kitchen area for the full family. Either way you twist it, you will have a problem. If you practise a lot, you can find camper trailers that can set up fast.

    • @DaneF1

soundscollector 65 pegs seems a bit ridiculous

    • @jhardy33

Now I suppose the larger more heavier trailers would hinder your Offroad capabilities but what about a smaller or mid-sized Offroad trailer ? I wish Ronny Dahl would Opine in on this question? Seems to me since I dont have experience with towing one of these offroad trailers; but it seems to me that a mid sized one would Not hurt your offroad capabilities that much, and the smaller trailers would not hurt them much at all..IDK though and would be nice for someone with the experience to give their opinions...thnxx......

Weird! I don't know any aussies that use the word hood (unless it's something connected to a coat that covers your head). 'Butt' definitely gets used - I had never really noticed that it was an American term.
Our pronunciation is a mashup of bloody everywhere I reckon - we still say 'zed' and 'tomarto' though so I don't think we've strayed too far.

Hey Ronny this may be a rude question to ask but you can answer however you want.
I'm looking into a brand new 79 duel cab land cruiser, i was wondering how much you paid for yours, if it was second hand or brand new, and if you reckon its worth it to buy one of these vs something like a new ford ranger!
    Thankyou!

If you want more road manners and luxury (NVH, etc) get the ranger, if you want a tough vehicle that will do whatever you tell it to, get the 79 just make sure you get the lockers.

Thanks, they are really pricey for how little technology they have in the interior which is what annoys me the most!

been thinking about one of those small single axle US military trailers with a roof top tent on it. the military trailers are a little higher than most trailers and are built for off road and would be spot on with the hight of my truck, would just have to get a pintle hitch for the truck. here is an example just picture a roof top tent on it instead of the cover thats on there: tucson.craigslist.org/tro/6050043740.html

I wish so bad that companies in the US would make something like this and it not be super expensive.

trade you, you can have the cheap campers and we'll have the cheap full sized trucks. I really want a cummins ram, not paying $130k tho

The Cummins is a nice engine. I personally have a the Hemi because I wanted the Power Wagon capabilities. If Ram sends a Power Wagon that way, snatch one up.

Really? You don't want to rollout the support legs for one night? Mate its 5 minutes to set the tent up, thats frankly just a little lazy.

I wanna come to Australia and buy a trailer.... all of them are straight shit in the US or obscenely expensive. Why can’t people just make a quality product for a good price?
