- Help students bridge a common comprehension gap relating to the reactivity series with this video demonstration and article.
In this video, students see how an increase in temperature can speed up the reaction of a metal with water and the production of hydrogen gas. They can draw a mental connection between this and the reactions of magnesium with acids to produce hydrogen gas and a salt, and the reaction of lithium with water to produce hydrogen gas and a hydroxide.

I'm finishing a PhD and this is the first time I've seen the magnesium steam reaction.
Same here. Chemistry is so beatiful... And so annoying. I mean, after almost 10 years of studying chemistry, i need to think for a while to explain a relatively simple reaction!
Always happy to see another demo from you. I’ve never thought of showing the reactivity series with an indicator so there’s something I’ve learnt today. I’ll be doing the reactivity series with my students in a couple of weeks so this is perfect timing. Thanks for the inspiration, much appreciated!
Thanks, Declan, for demonstrating a really simple set up. I shall be showing it later this week.
Declan, thanks for showing this reaction. Magnesium silicide synthesis, and its reaction with water, would also be an interesting experiment to demonstrate if done safely.
it's funny you should say that ... keep an eye on the channel in the next couple of weeks ;)
@@declan.fleming For sure! We never miss your video. As sand is plentiful where we are, we may also give this a try.

Important ✌
I have magnesium powder
But can I use a steel tube instead

Hi lads
hi
That guys creepy Though
For you maybe, but not for his students.
@@martinbennett2228 what the hell was this commentary

@@martinbennett2228 it just seemed cringy lol, but I got what you wanted to say
the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more
