- Lee Daniels' new Netflix thriller, The Deliverance, perfectly illustrates why I’ll never own a home with a basement. Seriously, has anything good ever come from a basement in a film?
In this chilling faith-based thriller, Daniels, known for his gripping storytelling, presents a tale where a single mother is trying to care for her children while contending with a demonic presence already residing in their new home. Andra Day, reuniting with her director from The United States vs. Billie Holiday, takes on the role of a distressed mother in a drama that Daniels hopes will frighten viewers into seeking divine intervention.
Inspired by true events, the film takes considerable liberties with its source material. Glenn Close stands out with her memorable performance, adorned in hoop earrings and an array of wigs, while Monique and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor provide a dose of grounded realism alongside Day's more detached portrayal of Ebony.
In my latest review, I delve into Daniels' intent to evoke fear, the unique portrayal of Glenn Close's character Alberta, and how the film's inconsistent continuity and lack of consequence contribute to its disjointed feel.

I thought the film was really wild, too. Lee Daniels takes some big swings!
I thought he did a great job. It's thoroughly entertaining
