    EDITOR'S NOTE:
    Hey Shadowsauce here o/
    Thank you for watching to the end, I hope you enjoyed it! You can ignore this if you don’t want to see me preach a bit during the credits.
    This is a pretty long highlight just like the first one, but I like to take my time with these STORY CUTs, hence also the very long wait. I only started a few months ago, taking time to pursue other interests, but I always wanted to make a highlight to Echoes of the Eye. Outer Wilds and Vinesauce mean a lot to me as a person, as they provided me with some much-needed escapism and joy during the last few years. This thought is what fueled me through this very long editing process but I hope the wait was worth it!
    For other editors out there, or people just wanting to compile videos of their favourite streamers, know that it may feel daunting at first, sifting through many hours of content, but my advice is to take it slow. There’ll always be other compilations out there, hell I mean there’s an official highlight of Outer Wilds on the main Vinesauce channel. So, take a step back to breathe with many breaks in between. This for me was the best remedy for making this compilation.
    As for the reason for the STORY cut in the first place, it’s fairly simple. I don’t like creating short edits. Even though it’s a highlight, I want the story and thus the experience to breathe a little, so that the viewer can maintain interest without being hit by a thousand quick cuts at once, which is a very valid way of doing it, I just don’t because I prefer this. You’ll notice there are extensive parts in this video, where I barely do any cutting or decide against adding in a meme since I don’t want to take away from the moment. It might seem weird then to make a STORY cut if the original playthrough exists, which I always recommend watching first. The way I see it, this is a different experience to watching Vinny’s playthrough of that game, rather than a smash-cut of the best moments. I did say I’d get a little preachy, but I think that covers everything.
    Overall, then, thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to watch all of this and the first video on the main game. I’m overwhelmed by how much support that video has received over the last few years. I’ll continue to make edits, in fact, I’m working on a FF7 Remake video right now as this is getting finalized.
    So, if you enjoyed this edit, maybe check out the others as well. Thank you for the continued support, I’ll see you guys around o/ .

    I love about Mobius Games is that they introduce a simple idea, like light activated devices and a lantern that can focus light, and explore every possible way that idea can be used to solve puzzles. These guys really are the best at visual storytelling, puzzles, and making the entire game a riddle to piece together.

      They mentioned in an interview that their process involves a lot of independent test products, an example being "a puzzle using quantum effects". A direct part of their design philosophy is understanding how players learn and set rules for themselves and intentionally trying to establish then expand on those concepts in-game. The "aha!" moments were planned 10/10.

    I think Vinny missed the point of their behaviour.
    They misinterpreted the vision. They saw that the Eye was connected to the end of the universe and so they thought they could stop it by trapping the eye's signal. More than this, they saw it as a betrayal by an object that by this point they worshipped as a god and destroyed their homeworld to seek out.
    But their fears weren't true. The universe would still end without the eye, but there would be no one able to start a new one as they could never find the eye.
    The prisoner single-handedly undoes their fear-inspired work, bringing the Nomai who in turn enable a Hearthian thousands of years later to enter the eye and begin a new universe.
    The work of these three independent species who inhabit the system thousands of years apart from each other brings the cycle of the eye forward one step in its eternal task. They work together on the most important task in the Universe without really ever being properly aware of each other at all, or what they're even doing.

      To be fair, I think a lot of us after our initial experience of the DLC didn't have a grasp of the full scope of the story. Really similar to the game, it takes a few people discussing it to fully understand the nuances of the whole Outer Wilds experience. Hence I'm really glad Dave joined in for the last part of the stream to answer some of Vinny's questions.

      Well the universe doesn't end if no conscious observer enters the eye. Just all the suns explode and then eternal nothingness. Since the stranger flies out of the danger zone, the simulation will run forever and the plan of the deer/owls would have worked. They just were selfish and afraid that their time would end way earlier. I even believe that they knew, that the universe would restart after the end of the current universe. They just had no place in it and that they didn't want so they prevented it...almost successfully. Ironically the memory of them enters the new universe. One reel shows a dead owldeerskull and then it gets overgrown by grass. So that means to me that there is new life after that. Anyways, great game, great story cut. Thank you for uploading❤

      @@shadowsauce3463 well, the simulations remained active for how long in the timeline again? XD
      when dealing with alien tech, anything could be possible, and up until we meet the prisoner and/or dive into the game's code, we have no idea what lies within. If it is a person, maybe it is a hibernation stasis chamber, locked to protect someone important like a king or pharaoh (if i am remembering my pharaoh lore correctly, that was half the point of pyramids: not just burial grounds, but monuments to the gods potentially capable of bringing the dead back to life. a sign of hope and respect on a meta level)?
      Humorous? Yes. Very if you are in the know. Impossible? It is a scifi game: so no. The final "let's sail into the sunset, friend" message kinda sets it in stone, though. XD (cant just come back from a "happily ever after" by finding the owlk alive alongside a now "dead" hatchling in reality: tonal whiplash level- Extreme.)

    • @cullenlatham2366
      @cullenlatham2366 Месяц назад

      @@Zach-cn4lb i know it gets confusing, but i was referring to a virtual body or fingerprint. Yes, every simulation ghost has a real world corpse to match, but the simulation's goal was eternal life and preserving consciousness, and that is what i was debating. We know the entities of the simulation were once living people, but we dont know how much consciousness remains. Any other owlk attacks on sight (save for the initial "confusion" of crashing the party and waiting to see who will take initiative), but the prisoner interacts in a way proving a greater intellect than just following their scripted code. A simulation ghost is only seen on owlks we cannot quite confirm a difference between digitized routine and a consciousness that can react and adapt to things too complicated to program. In effect, i am arguing the concept of consciousness being eternal in nature, and cant quite rule out the possibility that the olks had nothing to live for and deteriorated into soulless husks operating off the programming meant to maintain their avatars instead of a complex consciousness and "free will".
      But that leaves the question of how the prisoner fits into things if its species has otherwise lost sentience, and my best answer comes in the form of our rationale for the existence of hell: maintaining consciousness as a punishment, forever aware of the suffering they have to endure to repent for the sins of their life- the difference? a glimmer of hope (us, the hatchling, and what we represent in the greater rules of the universe) to sadistically continue the eternal torment without "breaking" the prisoner. In more plain terms, i see the prisoner in a hell where their wardens have lost all sense of self and act off routine and programming over any form of humanitarianism.

    • @Zach-cn4lb
      @Zach-cn4lb Месяц назад

      @@cullenlatham2366 I’d disagree. The other owlks pretty clearly are conscious. They’re watching slide shows of their home, listening to music, and when they catch you they don’t attack, they just blow out your light to send you home. They’re pretty clearly sentient and understanding of what’s going on

  • @cullenlatham2366
    @cullenlatham2366 3 месяца назад +18

    there are a few details off in the overall explanation, the most important of which is that the Owlks (the commonly accepted name for the stranger's inhabitants) were not trying to save the universe, nor were they successful towards that goal, intentional or not. The eye was not the cause of the death of the universe, but instead simply told them a truth they could not accept: the universe would eventually die, and their deaths would be the fertilizer for new life. The contraption they sent to orbit the eye had one purpose and one purpose alone: stop the signal from reaching anyone else. They cared not to "save the universe", they only wished to save themselves and ran from the truth of the matter as a result. It worked for a time, but as pointed out, in the end, the universe died naturally, and the owlks mostly perished when they lacked a physical form to stop the stranger's deterioration. As the stranger solar-sailed away from the impending supernova, the added external stress to the system broke the dam which flooded and destroyed 2 of the 3 virtual sanctuaries within the 22 minute constraints you are stuck in, and the third likely isnt far behind considering the electrical systems needed to power it started malfunctioning with the change in water levels. From there, we have to start debating if most of the owlks are even still alive if "matrix mode" shows their ghosts operating off routine more than anything else. The prisoner was left to wallow in the knowledge of their prison, and directly communicates with the player; if any owlk is still considered alive within the simulation, it is the prisoner, and the sequence is structured in such a way we cant see the prisoner's simulation "ghost".
    Also worth noting is that your tale for the prisoner is modified based off the information logged in the ship's computer, so as not to spoil new players who buy the game bundled and solve the stranger's mysteries first. If you have already solved all the mysteries of the base game, it acts as a great recap of everything up to that point in a way arguably much clearer than what the base game does to reveal all. Do none of the base game and the scene really only explains how you came to be part of outer wilds ventures and the state you found his physical home in (the stranger) on arrival.

    • @nts0n
      @nts0n 3 месяца назад +6

      I think what they saw in the vision was technically accurate: the eye DOES destroy the universe, but they misunderstood what the purpose of said destruction was. It wasn't just destroying the universe out of malice, but wiping the slate clean so something new could be created. They had no way of understanding this since the Eye began emitting the signal long before there was observable signs the universe was dying. They obviously couldn't see things on the same time scale the Eye did: they had hundreds of thousands of years more to live, but to an entity that has lasted several universes that wasn't much time at all. This is a hard thing to come to terms with, but in the end their decision to obscure it was indeed for selfish reasons.

    • @cullenlatham2366
      @cullenlatham2366 3 месяца назад +3

      @@nts0n Yeah, my word choice was based off the intent of the message. The eye does destroy, but it is not malicious about it. The act is less about destruction and more about creation. The destruction by eye is a side effect of creating the "space" needed for the next big bang. Heck, if we dissect the base game ending, we cant trigger the big bang until the heat death of the universe extinguishes all other life; by that logic, a case could be made that the eye instead perpetuates the life of those who physically find it until nothing is left for it to destroy, and that theory spirals in a multitude of ways including the survival of those who find it by joining the hivemind of all past life that the eye possibly represents. The new universe is modified based off of the experiences of the hatchling, so how complex would the new universe be if it had access to the memories of an entire species or the 3 generations of species that could have found it if not for the owlk's interference instead of a lone survivor? Heck, if time is infinite on the eye, and we can send the scout into the new universe, who's to say if a civilization living on the eye could not have found new life in the new universe through the same means as the scout? Admittedly, a lot of this is theory fodder, but if the game doesnt get players into such a theoretical mindset, did it really work as intended? XD

    I've been eagerly awaiting this since the original supercut 3 years ago, and it did not disappoint. Thank you so much for making this video, there's so much passion, so much effort put into it, so much love for the game.
    It's a shame how much stuff Vinny (and Dave) misinterpreted, but I think they've got it figured out after the fact.

    • @shadowsauce3463
      @shadowsauce3463  3 месяца назад +1

      Yep, there's a bunch more signifiers in this edit. There's the aspect ratio change when the Dam Breaks, the removal of the Loop Counter when he enters the Dream World (which was more for flavor and to heighten the fear), and then the green overlay for those visions as you mentioned.
      Glad you enjoyed that!

    The fact that Vinny did it the expected/easier way the first time. And then Dave tells him the "speedrun strat" which keeps failing caused a big disconnect between Vinny finishing Echoes and then reaching the eye again.

    • @shadowsauce3463
      @shadowsauce3463  3 месяца назад

      My two choices were just cutting out the stuff in between Echoes and the Eye OR including it in because there are some generally good moments in there (e.g. Vinny's discussion about the game and the Angler Fish deaths). Since I thought the former went against the spirit of the edit, I went with the latter.
      But yeah I agree, it would have just been easier to show Vinny the ending.

    I literally started making my own edit of this DLC playthrough yesterday! After seeing your edit of the vanilla game, I was picking up where you left off. So thanks for saving me the work, lol. I'm now very aware of how much effort these compilations - and especially this game - take, and you did a great job just like your first cut. I'm curious, around how many hours did this take to make?

    • @shadowsauce3463
      @shadowsauce3463  3 месяца назад +1

      A rough summary would be around 30-40 hours. These edits are slow and I like to take my time with them. But hey! Make your own edit of this too if you want. After all, I'm not Vinny so I can only encourage others to do it!

    The Strangers didn't stop the eye from destroying everything, the eye doesnt do anything unless someone enters it observes it, collapsing all the possibilities of the new universe beginning. What the Strangers saw was to them a representation of what the eye is under the lens of fear. they saw their home turned to dust which is partially true but only because a new universe would be born. The Stranger is also very VERY dead in the physical sense. no body is going to stay alive after hundreds of thousands of years that have passed since he was imprisoned. You only see his VR version as it can still continue on even when dead in the real world. you even see the Prisoner's footsteps trail off into the water where he jumped in, finally freeing himself and dying properly.

    The eye of the universe would never have ended the universe prematurely. The elk/owl people misinterpreted the vision of it restarting the universe as it ending them. But they never managed to stop any process of it, simply managed to hide it.

    • @shadowsauce3463
      @shadowsauce3463  3 месяца назад +1

      True that! It's sort of ironic in some ways. In their attempt to hide the Echoes, they ended up almost stopping the universe from restarting.
