Surface water on the frozen lake. The bane of every backcountry winter traveller. My son and I did a trip last February in Temagami and the surface water was the worst O have ever seen, freezing to the bottom of the toboggans and turning the snowshoes into concrete blocks. No doubt you guys worked hard and earned your appetites.
Once that happens. You are not going much farther. Look for camp. And chisel off the ice buildup off the bottom of your sled the next morning and hope you don't come across it again. And you are so right. I didn't mention the the shoe shoes that became concrete shoes. Thank you Alan so much for watching. I always appreciate it.
between you and Shug I have a desire to see the BWCA in the wintertime. Maybe before this one is over but it will probably have to be next winter Lord willing. Thanks for taking us along and prayers up for a prosperous safe year for Zach. Stay safe Marine!
Those steaks looked great and thank goodness you cooked them over a fire and not wrapped up in tin foil. Thanks for the Vids so I can live vicariously through them.
Great show Marine!!! A heckuva a lot of useful information. We don’t get that cold in Texas, but cold enough. I bought a Warbonnet hammock a few months ago and haven’t even got out once . But this has inspired me to get off my lazy butt and get out. Thanks!!!!!!
After that fall grouse hunting trip. In which I let my little brother use the Warbonnet Blackbird XLC. He bought one and then bought one for his wife for Christmas. Thank you for watching Terry. The wilderness is calling for you and your Warbonnet.
Ahhh man that was so beautiful Marine but not for me! hahaha. It was a pure glory to watch. I live on the Mediterranean coast because I love the hot summers and mild winters. If you remember I told you that you had inspired me to take up hammock camping at age 70. I took my new set-up out for a trial run the other night and for a 1st time it was great! I loved it, slept like a baby and woke up in full nature up in the mountains with the birds singing - heaven! It was -2c at 8am when I woke up and I was toasty. I believe I'm a convert and I have you to thank - your "Beginners Series" really hooked me. so thanks again, stay safe and keep up the good work. God Bless you.
I am so happy that you are getting out with that hammock in Gods creation. Thank you Paul so much for all of the watching. I really do appreciate it. I can't wait to hear about your next adventure. God bless.
Looked like another great camp out. The Dream Team was back together again. Have to go back in your videos and look at your snowshoes. After 20 years of abuse my Tubbs bit the bullet. Take care, stay safe and God Bless to you both, Al
Runner was having trouble with his snow shoes. Check out the Crescent Moon Gold. They are so easy to put on and take off. They work great. Little expensive. But well worth it. Next video, I am sure you will see Runner having a pair of those on his feet. It is always good to hear from you Al. God bless.
Great stuff as always, Marine! I truly appreciate the camera placement for the shots of you walking by. I smile when I think of how you have to walk back later and get the camera. Thanks for doing that for us over and over. I picked up three BWCA permits for 2022. Like you, I use a Wilderness Systems kayak and sleep in a hammock. New for me this year is an underquilt for my May and June trips. Watching your BWCA videos gets me fired up for spring and eager to head on up there!
As you know. Doing a trip in the BWCA is a lot of work to begin with. Now trying to film it takes a lot of time. Thank you Tom so much for noticing that. I have just have one permit so far. I will be getting a lest another two more. The Wilderness System Kayak are get for those kind of trips. What degree under quilt did you get?
40 degree underquilt (I went the cheap route for now). Hopefully that paired with a 40 degree sleeping bag will be ok for late May nights along the Gunflint Trail. I saw another one of your videos where you use a sleeping bag like a blanket when also using an underquilt. I have a mummy bag, so that probably won’t work. We’ll see. This is only year #2 of me coming up from the Twin Cities to BWCA, so my equipment will continue to evolve.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine Not really, considering going to the Northern Wisconsin hang in late Feb. Other than that I hope to do some snowmobiling. We haven’t had a lot of good snow yet in North Central WI. How about you?
Beautiful scenery. Whilst the steaks were cooking I couldn't help wondering if it would attract bear or other predators. I also wondered about your boots freezing overnight but I see you had them on the grill beside the fire to keep them thawed out. The trip looked interesting, a lot colder than we would get in the UK. Nice to see you both say Grace before your meal. Prayers for both you and Runner and for the safety of your Son Zach in China. Worrying times we live in. God bless and keep you safe.
Bears are hibernating. But the wolves would of like a little nipple. When the temperatures are below -5°c. I will use my Mukluks. They slide on with ease in the morning and warm up quickly. The reason Runner put his boots on the grill next to the fire. Is because when we came across the lake with water above the ice. The bottom of his boots built up a couple of centimeters of ice. I thought about putting my sled on the grill to get the ice off. But I didn't want to take a chance of melting it. So I use the shovel to scrap it off. Thank you Steven so much for watching. God bless
Thanks for sharing the adventure into the BWCA! Great to see you and Runner back out together again. Friendships are real treasures. Looks like you were rewarded for your labors with that beautiful snow, clinging to every branch, and those meals, MMMMmm! Best wishes as always, SW (Formerly Coughing owl)
Beautiful! I haven't been up there in a few years. I did one trip to Fourtown over New Years one year where it didn't get above zero, lows were in the minus 30s. Cold tent. It is surprising how comfortable you can be.
This was a great watch Marine! I really dug that camp! I reckon I’m more of a tent, double ensolite and 20 below bag kinda winter traveller. The Boy Scout favorite, timberline 2, would fit the bill great i reckon. My 20 below synthetic bag weighs a ton but you probably want the extra weight on your back to keep you workin harder and stayin warmer. Hey Marine, I was wondering if you had ever considered a firebox stove. They’re pretty sweet! They’re great when ur campin in those heavily picked over campsites. Great versatility and you can blaze it up with larger pieces for a small warmin fire. I love mine. Great yo see Runner out there on this one! Take care. NQU
I got my son Zac a Timberline tent ( which he still has ) when he was around 10 years old. The kids got me a Firebox Stove for my birthday 3 years ago. I have used it in a couple of my videos. It is my favorite stove. I had it with me but did not use it. I was going to use it the last morning for breakfast. But we decided to leave just as the light was piercing the darkness. Which was a great experience. You will see that stove being used a lot in upcoming videos. Thank you Notquiteultralight for watching.
Would be nice to see you and Runner again, truly great people. Which trail and camp ground did you use? Tell Runner to use the hand or foot warmers between a couple of layers of socks and it should help. Great video nice to see you both again and prayers go out to Zach for his safety.
It is always good to hear from you Russell. I am hoping that Tumbleweed will have Da Shack Hang this December. It would be good to see everybody again. God bless
i so miss the snow trips but as i am in 80deg weather here in Palm Desert i will enjoy your trip The spuds are great and i take dehydrated eggs in winter ( i have frozen eggs to many times lol )
I do love beacon and eggs for breakfast in the Great Outdoors. To me it is a must. I bet there are time you could fry an egg on a rock in that heat, in Palm Desert.
Maybe someday I will give it a try. But I sleep like a baby in my hammock. No matter what the temperatures are. Zac bought on that you can hang a hammock in. Hopefully he is back from China next year to give us a peek. Thank you for watching Jerry.
In cold temperatures. Hoods are so great. Any heat that escapes behind your neck. is trap inside the hood to give that extra warmth. And having a fur lining. Provides more warmth. But a drawback is they can block your vision when you turn your head.
I would say around forty pounds. ( 18kg ) If it gets any heavier. I will attach another sled behind my pulk. And pull two sleds. A lot easier that way. Thank you for watching Michael.

When you are at a designated campsite. It is hard to find wood for a long night fire. Because all of the wood is picked over. Plus, it is much cooler to set up camp where no none has ever.
