  • As scandals involving misbehaving monks rock the nation, 101 East examines if Thailand can save its moral soul.
Nehn Kham was once a hugely popular monk preaching in Thailand's poor northeast region. Today, he is an international fugitive with a $32m fortune that he amassed through fraud.
Buddhists around the world were shocked when footage emerged of the monk on a private plane, clutching a Louis Vuitton bag and fidgeting with high-end gadgets. His extravagance put him atop a long list of misbehaving monks making headlines in Thailand for fist fights, smuggling drugs, selling guns, hiding pornography and more.
In response, Thailand's military junta has set up a 24-hour hotline for the public to report rule-breaking monks. But the junta is also proposing new laws to criminalise breaking any Buddhist rule - a move some fear is an over-reaction that would threaten religious freedom.
101 East exclusively reveals where Thailand's infamous jet-setting monk has been hiding, and meets those on a mission to save the country's moral soul.

Corrupt people become that, when they are given too much education, too much money, too much power.
Likewise, we Europeans gave charity to Somalian nation, gave boats and tools for fishing. Afterwards, Kenyans asked Europe to stop giving them charity, after Somalians were creating civil wars in neighbouring countries. Also, Somalian fishermen become pirates. Charity gets abused in much the same way as power.

the idea of equality in Buddhism context refers to the same basis (human rebirth), opportunity everyone had to achieve enlightenment and the fundamental goal of everyone: want happiness and don't want suffering. in advance, the ultimate nature of every being is the same. Why monks subject to sets of law? it is because conventionally, every being is tainted by the negative affliction. So, in order to attain the quality of "equality" in this context, the vows help to control and free the mind from afflictions. Unless you can provide a complete version of buddha's sermon of your sentence that buddha said all humans are equal, then contextually the discussion would be different.

I'm an Indian and during my college days I studied with many Thais especially thai monks. Thai students had a separate building used as Kitchen for themselves which was overlooked by a monk. One thing I noticed is that most of them did not practice celebacy as they should because they had girlfriends. They lived a very open life. I also heard that most get into monastery because the government funds their education and they come from very poor background. Once they get the education from other countries especially from India they go back and leave the monastery and live a regular life. They take advantage of the loophole in the system.

If monks are “just men” and “just like other people” then they should be punished according to the law “just like other people”. Their religion should not protect them from criminal prosecution. So a paedophile who is a monk confesses and gets no jail time, but if he were “just a man” then he would go to jail. The monk should go to jail too.

The religious does not protect them from jails, there are no rules in Buddhist that the monks shouldn't go to jail. He didn’t wear makeup, he did put on a sort of black line directly underneath his eye, this was to prevent sand from coming into his eyes (it was common, they lived in the Sahara after all) he wore a thawb, it is common amongst men to this very day. And he never touched boys, Islam doesn’t support pedophilia in any matter. The whole marrying a 9 year old wasn’t true. His first wife was over 40 whilst he was in his twenties. And how dare you accuse him of performing inappropriate acts with young boys, our dear prophet never did or would do that. Please don’t disrespect a religion when you don’t know enough about them. Propaganda has demonized our religion. I urge you to look up any video about the prophet peace be upon him. Not a video from an anti-Islamic channel, but a real one, one that is narrated by a Muslim. May Allah forgive us all.

In this video Al Jazeera has not tried to disgrade Buddhism. It has tried give a value in the global community to keep Buddhism untainted. As Buddhists viewers should appreciate Al Jazeera for trying to conserve their fellow religions in their original qualities. Yes not just Buddhism. All the religions in the world has an original quality. Now it's time to preserve them in their diversity without letting innocent youth trap in extremism. Religion of a Christian is Christianity (though many branches are there) Religion of a Hindu is Hinduism (though many branches are there) Religion of a Muslim is Islam (though few branches are there) Religion of a Buddhist is Buddhism (though few branches are there) So original faith of any religion has no branches or even misunderstanding. Interpretation from person to person.. Culture to culture.. Generation to generation.. Time to tima has resulted this gap. Now it's time to understand the Religion of Mankind is Humanity. Apart from that all the religions on earth are our heritage. We must protect their values as one nation on earth.

People need to live in reality. Monks are humans. We do not put on this robe and become purified. We vow to follow these disciplines, but its superficial to think that they will be perfect from then on. We make mistakes along the way. We aspire to purity. A monk is still a monk if he break an rule until he removes his robe. If he repents to Buddha or A Monk or even himself sincerely, and feel a sense of shame , then he can remain a monk and strive onto purity

I live in Thailand, not Bangkok, Pattaya but rural N'E.Thailand . My wife is a devout Buddhist ,in fact she is at the Temple as I write. The Thais are not stupid , they know what Monks are good or bad. When you see a Temple in a poor condition its usually because the head monk is no good. its customary for a young Thai boys to be inaugerated into Buddhism by being a novice monk for a month or ever , up to them . Personally I haven't a religious bone in my body , but I do admire Buddhists. When disaster strike , like flooding their input is essential for those affected. My wife went out every day cooking and delivering food to those stranded. Convoys of lorries arrived from all over Thailand donated by different Temples. Sure all barrels can contain a rotten apple , doesn't mean they are all bad.

Many Thais do actually believe in some sort of spiritual being, which some may or may not call a god. While monks do not teach anything about god, Thais do tend to mix their learnings with their many superstitious beliefs. Buddha didn't believe in god but he was very superstitious. Can't say that's any better. Also, the Buddhist teachings are very outdated for the most part. Doesn't fit with modern society.

sofullofpiss In my opinion it is not a religion, as I see religion to include at leased some sort of influential spiritual being in the belief system. That is absent from Buddhism. Otherwise everything could be called religion. The core teachings in Buddhism are "The Three Universal Truths", "The Four Noble Truths" and "The Noble Eightfold Path" and all other teachings is based from that. All of that is based upon Buddha's own view on how to maximize the well-being of yourself and those around you, which include teaching of morality, personal development, wisdom, cause and effect, karma etc. The teachings extends mostly with more philosophy, but does include some superstition based upon Buddha's beliefs himself, as well as some cultural superstition taught by monks locally that you won't find in general-Buddhism. Most Buddhist cultures also happens to include much other superstitious beliefs, but that's outside of buddhist teachings and is not taught in temples, such as the belief in god, among many other beliefs. While there are some good teachings in Buddhism, which most certainly can be helpful, it is also filled with much outdated stuff and other things I just simply don't agree with. If you want to call this package religious beliefs, then go ahead, I just don't see where the religious part is. Superstitious, yes, but not religious.

Yes, but this case shows that if you become a monk, you will still be human. I mean, all aspects of life will affect you. I am a Christian and when I was young I thought of becoming a Franciscan. But I had a huge problem with being attached to women. It's not like I did, but I just couldn't stop thinking. When I came across Goenka's Vipassana, I became interested in Buddhism. I want to go to Thailand and become a monk for a few months, but I want to prepare myself first. Situations with "misbehaving monks" show me that I need to meditate more intensively and properly control my inner desires. I want to make sure I take advantage of this practice. They fell, but that only shows that the task is not so easy. Jesus said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." I believe that being a good monk and following all the rules is just that, and that is something I want to achieve for some time in my life. I think it's the same with any religion. To become a good believer, one must always be aware that some evil parts of the mind can attack and one must be prepared to face them.

Well I guess it depends which branch of buddhism you look at. As in many other religions, catholic christianism is slightly different than protestant christianism. In Japan, many buddhist monks even are married and have a job. I read some buddhist scripts, I like the concept - since its less an actual religion, but a guidance to live your live in harmony, which leads to more harmony to peoples lives all around you. It doesn't refer to follow rules strictly, but to do whats necessary in the situation to keep balance. In original scripts, even from Buddha himself, there isn't actually an "never ever do that or...", or "you must...". More like a "it's better not to do that since it helps keeping balance." also things like: "Think for yourself and question authority" since they could (for example) make a rule to kill others, which you do not want to follow. What many of the monks do, doesn't fit in "keeping balance and harmony", so it isn't a buddhist thing to do. But please don't limit buddhism to rules and common ethics. Monks are not holy men - they are human beeings searching for truth. Wise men. Buddha isn't a god - he was a founder, teacher and symbol.

I know of first hand knowledge that some do use their monk hood to abuse and fraud their community. It's disgusting & not only should they be defrocked but treated the same as a criminal! Monks & their wrong doings sound the same as Priests doing their wrong doings as well & the Catholic Church protects them too! Why should they be any different from any other criminal if they offend? Their exposure will hopefully educate

By linking the two it only leads to infringements of freedoms. If a buddhist monk breaks religious law - then defrock them... and if they also break civil laws - jail/fine them based on the civil laws broken. If they are running a prostitution/pedophile ring then jail them... just like you would if a normal citizen did the same thing.

    • @CloseLook29
      @CloseLook29 6 лет назад +1

Stephen's view is a well-informed perspective on this topic. For the good of all concerned I would like to add this input.
Those who are deeply concerned with this issue and are urging the Thai government to make laws to check this, should be cautious also. Any hasty law made on this matter, no matter how good the intention may be behind it, can and WILL BE misused by INTERSETED PARTIES to slowly slowly undermine and then help to destroy both Thailand's identity and Buddhism in Thailand. And once a bill is passed into law, it becomes established policy of the government, the nation, and almost impossible to repeal.
To give a historical context for my concern: After Albert Einstein gave his signature on the letter to President FDR to start the Manhattan Project, the atomic bomb was made, and it was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Though Einstein believed, at the time of giving his signature, that giving his signature was very important contribution to end the Second World War and therefore the right thing to do, making that decision became one of Einstein's deepest regret for the rest of his life.
Anyone in Thailand who wants to become engaged on this issue of the weaknesses of a small minority of the venerable Sangha of Thailand, he or she MUST read, AT LEAST ONCE, a copy of the monks' Patimokha Sutta (Pratimoksha Sutra in northern Buddhism). This information is credible authority in the eyes of the Thai Law also, as it is THE rule book for the venerable Buddhist Sangha laid down by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni himself, and active to this day in both Thailand and all other Buddhist nations.
From this information, the concerned activist, or groups of activists, will have clear evidence on this and related issues. They will gain an educated understanding of the issue. They will the know the true measure of the suspected monk's action or actions.
      By a concerned Tibetan monk.

Some countries the religious core beliefs are the law of the land as well..
If some does not want to live according to that law...
      Then the solution is simple..
leave and go to another country where the law of the land is not based on the traditional religious cultural core beliefs...
like a free for all, anything goes America ....lol...
If you dont want to simulate then go away...lol..
I will never understand why a Muslim would go to a Christian based country and then act like they are wrong for not converting their country and way of life because they should up...
Why not just move to a country that already shares your currant desired core beliefs...lol... Honestly, I think some people love to be unhappy and find things to complain about...
You life would be so much happier.. that trying to change others to what you want...
When you knew that was the cultural status qua there....

Apparently few bad monks in Thailand means that Mahayana Buddhism in China, Japan, and Korea and Theravada Buddhism in the entirety of South East Asia is completely corrupt and that all the teachings of the Buddha are fake? This is an organizational & social issue, not an issue with the teachings of the religion.

I am not aware of any scandals in China, Japan or Korea. However, among Zen practionsors in the U.S. they are mostly sexual in nature. Our temple organization has made it more than 100 years operating in the U.S. without a scandal. So yes it is possible to operate a temple or a complete organization without a scandal

Thai monk authority seem to have woven a well crafted safety net for their tainted monks by just defrocking them and not punishing them severely. And obviously it is because they know that it’s a widespread menace in the monk world and that they don’t want to give it any hype that could expose the reality of monks .

The more you are forced, tricked conditioned into a religion the more corrupt it becomes. The more someone chooses to seek out spirituality the more righteous they become.

Monks take a vow to uphold the monastic rules. If any are broken there are appropriate responses up to being forced to leave monasticism. There is a high standard in the community however no base requirements therefore any kind of person could find themselves as a monk. Actions of one says nothing of all. The Buddha said no man can purify another. To the misbehaving, their responsibility is their own

Like the forest monk says... We are only humans after all. Even the best can be corrupted when they are supposed to be revered. Buddhism, ask people to look inward, to criticize yourselves and your own believes. The struggle to find meaning in a meaningless existence is a challenge we all face, from the poor to the rich, the unknown to the famous. No one is immune from the human condition.

    • @harrymcnicholas9468
      @harrymcnicholas9468 7 лет назад

I think part of the problem is that in many countries monks are suppose to be someone revered. There is no difference between a monk and lay person. Monk is only one way to practice the Dharma. It is not the only way. You may choose it because you cannot stand the distractions of society. It is easy to become enlightened in a closed off temple deep in the mountains. Not so easy in downtown Bangkok among all the noise, air pollution and grime.
