The 2022 Pokemon Card Illustration Contest is starting soon - giving artists the chance to have their illustrations become a Pokemon Promo card. But what are some important things you should know? From what place should your drawing come from? Which Pokemon will you draw and how will you bring them to life? And will you be lucky enough to find your Pokemon card in a Booster Pack or Booster Box?
Luckily, Kouki Saitou has some extremely helpful tips for up and coming artists! As part of the 2018 Illustrator Grand Prix, Kouki Saitou explained part of his drawing process and demonstrated to fans how to draw Eevee - one of the most well known Pokemon next to Pikachu and Charizard!
This video is based on a fan translation of a Creatures Inc article. The interpretation and explanations in this video are based on the original article by Kouki Saitou and Creatures Inc.

I’m glad there’s fans out there who appreciate the artwork , and how much the artist puts into their work , not like scalpers who only care about the value
I was expecting a video walking through a factory, this was actually even better going through the artist process.
Seriously an insightful video and lots of love for Saitou-san! Been wondering how Pokémon card illustrating process works, so this video has definitely been mind candy 🍬 seeing the coloring process was also so satisfying 😆. Loving this content JLuv!
Appreciate it Krystal - loving the work you're putting out at the moment too :D
@@okJLUVI had an AR pawmot and it's Ilus is kouki saitou
I love the production value of the video! Your translation work and how you put it together is really well done and shows how much you care to represent the artist in the right light. Keep up the hard work but don't overdo yourself!
Haha I'll try not to ;P and thanks mate - couldn't have done it without Saitou-san though!
It's always good when you make videos like this. You learn so much especially when you do not know Japanese. But there you do a great job by translating for us and giving us what many other content creators cannot.
Just trying to share stuff I find super interesting with you peeps :D thank you mate.
Tokiya, Hitoshi Ariga, Naoki Saito, Souchirou Gunjima 💖💖💖💖💖
Truly a master of his art. Thank you for sharing Jluv.
Crazy how i specifically searched for a video like this and you upload it the same day! Love this channel
Haha that is a little spooky, but I'm glad ;P
That was a really interesting video. I've always been curious about Pokémon card illustrations so this was a really good behind the scenes look!
Super cool! I might try using some of these drawing techniques myself! Thanks as always!
Excellent video, informative and efficient, no useless add-ons
Really great and insightful vid, thanks for putting this together!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it ;D
Really educational vid about the Pokemon illustration process from start to finish. Appreciate you taking quotes from Kouki Saitou on his thought process. Makes me appreciate the artwork a lot more even with the commons and uncommons! So many channels focus on the money aspect of Pokemon cards, so it's a breath of fresh air to watch one focusing on the design process.
Glad you liked it McKranzful, that really means a lot!
wow, that was another amazing video, never realised there was so much going on for an artwork that a lot of us pokemon collectors sometimes take for granted! Criminally underrated, this video should be blowing up :D
I don't deserve you Reval!
thanks for videos like this, love the translations, i have pretty much stopped collecting english, so videos like this really help with some extra fun info
Anytime - thank you heaps for watching. This was really refreshing to make personally :D
Amazing video! You broke everything down wonderfully, the translations were a great addition, and your bonus commentary on it all was the cherry on top.
Thank you Tyler, that means a lot! I'm looking forward to creating more videos like these :D
Awesome video! Thanks a lot, never seen anyone make a video on this.. surprisingly. Interesting.👍🏻
Dude, this was a fantastic video & one of the coolest and most original Pokemon videos I have seen in a while.
Hey mate, thank you so much, really! Glad to hear you enjoyed it :D
This was a great video, I can tell you put a ton of time into this Jluv! Thank you so much!
Yep - a lot of love went into this one, so I'm glad to hear you liked it :D
Thank you so much for putting this video together.. as a newbie to the pokemon world and someone who loves creating, this video has literally painting a new dimension and appreciation to pokemon cards. 😊🦋🙏
so glad you enjoyed it Ozlem!! thank you for the feedback ;D
Extremely insightful video here, I always find the art of Pokémon cards to be very overlooked when most people talk about the medium which is a shame. Pokémon card art is a major inspiration for me and it’s what got me into art and drawing in the first place lmao
absolute top top tier video Jluv, loved watching it
Thanks Harvir, glad you enjoyed it :D
Thank you for taking the time to make this video J! I really enjoyed every part of it, the structure, the presentation of new information, the flow of the video, the translations, the editing, the footage used. It was all brilliant! A phenomenal insight into the wonderful world of Pokémon. The new mic sounded good too 😁
Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it mate! And yes, I was happy to be able to put the new bad boy to the test!
Never ever seen this!!! Super cool!
love this !!! please do more like this it makes your content really stand out
I'm gonna fire these back up again ;D
Even as someone with zero artistic talent, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks for quality content again!
Appreciate it Brandon! Glad it resonated with you :D
Very informative. Not just open packs. It is so cool to have bilingual like you to explain Pokémon cards. One of the best compared to other Pokémon card channel. You will be successful!!! Keep going.
Thank you so much ziwei, I'm really glad you enjoyed this one! A lot of love went into it :D appreciate your support!!
Truly one of your best videos so far Jluv! It was really interesting, and I love the fact that you translated the interview of your favourite Pokemon artist! I remember that Komiya-San too wrote about his process (about a Celebi card), it would be awesome if you will cover it too in the future! Much love from Italy as always
Haha you know me mate, I could go on and on with a video like this! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D thank you as always!
Fantastic video. Love the effort, research and finesse you put into this. Great piece of work.
Thanks mate, glad it resonated with you! Has been a bit of a passion project for me over the last few weeks haha.
Great video! That's exactly what I needed right now. I'm working on some Pokemon card design and I was stuck just between Pokemon and the background step. Thanks, @okJLUV!
Oh wow that's actually amazing to hear - makes it all worth it. Good luck with finishing the piece!!
Genuinely exceptional video, dude! As an artist myself, it’s nice to get an in depth look into an another artists perspective. This is the inspirational stuff that makes me want to draw more.
Timeless, S tier video.

Thanks legend - glad it did you proud!!
okJLUV - this is the content I love from you! Thank you!
Appreciate it Mike :D
Absolutely love this video. Thanks big Jluv!
Anytime legend :D thanks for watching!
This video is amazing and really uselfull ty so much
Great video as always ! Thanks for sharing with us how those beautiful cards are made. I feel like non ultra rare cards do not enough recognition from people just because the drawing is not a full art card. But there is so many beautiful common cards out there. More people should start collecting cards from their favorite artists
100% agree - the deeper you look at them, the more you appreciate the detail.
Thanks for this JLUV! Being an illustrator myself, this was extremely insightful!
Wow! Thanks so much for showing us this!
No worries - thanks for watching :D
Awesome video! That’s why im subbed!
Thank you as always :D :D
Amazing video dude. Thank you!
Thank you mate!!
This would be such an awesome job
Amazing video, congrats! I know that this kind of content is hard and it takes a long time to make, but you should definitely do more videos like this. I love it ;)
Thank you mate, it was a very fun video to make though :D I'll do my best!
Amazing! Thank you for this ❤️
Anytime :D
Excellent video, your content is alway quality
Appreciate it D4RK ;D
Very nice video nobody really talks about this topic 💪🏻
This is the type of content I love! Inject it hahah. Cheers Jluv
Anytime Patrick!!
awesome stuff keep it up
Thanks for this video very informative! I think a lot of us forget what goes into a card’s art, skip over the commons, i commons and rares and just look for the secret rares.
No worries mate, most of us do, but once you start to really look at them you can appreciate so much more beauty!
Very cool video!
What an amazing video
Man! Wow! Thanks for the translation! So interesting 😍
Anytime iz!! :D
I would love to one day illustrate a pokemon card!! Just gotta get my art up a little more! Great content as always, really appreciate the effort it takes to edit and translate videos like this! お疲れ様です!
Life is a journey, I'm sure you'll get there one day Chelsea!! 頑張れ!
Amazing video thank you :) !
Appreciate that Emmett!
This may be your best video yet! Unsurprisingly, the process is very similar to other card games but it is always interesting to see the artist perspective. I don't think many of us (myself included) realize how much time is dedicated to creating just one card, from the illustration to card effects.
Also, Creatures are 1/3rd owners of The Pokemon Company, along with Nintendo and Game Freak! Given how popular the TCG is, it's crazy to me how many people don't realize how involved Creatures are in the franchise. A lot of English collectors for some reason have this idea that WOTC created the TCG when it was Creatures.
Appreciate it mate, Kouki Saitou is far and away my favourite artist so I had to give this as much love as I could. And yep, still kinda crazy people still credit purely WOTC but what can you do haha.
This video is gold man.
Ey thank you my man, I'm glad you think so :D :D
Good stuff! I was the winner of the Tangrowth for the Art Academy contest. Can't wait to see the submission for the contest this year!
Oh wow! Absolutely love the contrast you pulled off between Tangrowth and the background, an awesome card. And same here!!
holy shit this was a great video! thank you for your effort!!
Thanks mate, that means the world!!
This was great!
Thanks mate ;D
Really interesting video
Amazing content.
Just got here after the Pokémon annual awards!
I just saw that! Thank you so much for coming down :D
I’m like 2 minutes in and can say this is underrated. I love stuff like this oh my lord
great video man
Thank you legend, glad to hear you liked it :D
Holy fugma that was good
Thank you for this, really well made and I got to learn about something I would have never had the chance to learn, since I don’t speak Japanese haha
Thanks strawberry :D
Dude this is fresh content ; )
Hehe thank you mate!
You're doing legend tings again I see!

Top shelf entertainment
Such a great video! I'm hoping to draw inspiration from my favorite TCG artist, Kanako Eo, for the contest! She illustrated my favorite card ever, the Legendary Treasures Shaymin EX, as well as many other favorites including Pokekyun Sylveon and the Copycat card! And thank you for highlighting the process of the card making! I had never heard of the process before and had no idea where to start, and I think I've been properly informed thanks to your video!
Thank you so much LittleParade! I'm glad the video is gonna help you in some way, best of luck with your entry! BTW Kanako Eo is fantastic, I love the Copycat that she illustrated, so many Gen 2 vibes with it!
That is incredible.
It's pretty crazy ey! Thank you for watching :D
I’m so gutted I can’t join the art challenge outside of the states but I’m definitely going to apply this to my own art anyway 🙌 on a side note how cool would it be to get a special set of cards with the draft version artwork 🤩
Ah I'm sorry to hear Taye ;( but I'm happy to hear it's able to help you out a bit with your works! Thank you heaps for watching. And yeah, that actually would be amazing!
Big knowledge for a midnight video
Now you can dream about it ;D
So interesting, great video man!
hope if is it possible to work in the chain of production
you know how it works the translation? they print the card still in japan or they have companies in other parts of the world?
Thank you! There are printing facilities across the world; Japan, Korea, the US and UK to name a few. They print in their respective countries, and some countries (like Japan) print cards for other Asian regions.
Thank you for this video. I might try to ember for 2024. 🎨 🖼 ✏️
Nice vid
Wouldn't it be a super good subset with the rough sketch as an art pokemon card. I think it would be highly collectable. Just think timestamp: 6:13 as a finished card
Totally agree, have you seen the 25th Anniversary Artist Deck Chansey card? It's kinda similar!
@@okJLUV Yes its cool. Videotip: vid about special art cards!? 👍😎
Cool!
thanks Kanye!
Love the video but sadly it brings a tragic memory in my childhood...Roughly around when the Pokemon aired on our 📺 and before Pokemon TCG was available in stores. Like most kids, I feel in love with the series getting up early just to make sure I didn't miss a second of the show before school. At that time I was inspired, filled with passion to draw all 151 Pokemon and so I began to do so. I took out a red notebook like if it was a Pokedex with enough pages cos you know I "gotta draw them all" as suppose to "gotta catch them all" :P And everyday I would dedicate my time and effort to make sure my drawing was spot on or close in resembling to the pokemon and mind you (I still remember clearly) it was not so bad for a kid. I have probably filled my notebook about halfway each page dedicating to a pokemon and at this point I wanted to showcase to my class and friends. But unbeknownst to myself of what will transpire later that day would have me in ruins cos as you would have guess it...it was stolen from me. My blood , sweat and tears was poured into those pages and never to be seen again. No one ever owned up to it sadly nor I would ever feel passionate to draw again cos it would leave me feel angry or empty right after I complete a drawing. And by the time pokemon TCG reach to our hands it didn't resonate with me as to many others kids and sadly I would have trust issue soon after as the back of my mind I had a hutch that one my friends might have but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and put it behind me. .... Anyways thx for reading btw 2 decades later love Pokemon just don't draw unfortunately yet if I was able to participate I would. Peace ✌️ Y'all
:( this was such a sad story, terrible to hear how the passion was robbed from you. i hope you've found solace + peace with Pokemon since mate
Thank you.
Thank you mate, appreciate you watching!
10/10
You flatter me Krak!
Yes.
Anyone looking to win the Pokémon TCG art challenge: This video is for you! 💯
Definitely hope it can help some up and coming artists, thanks to Saitou-san!
Hah! Yeah! I’m actually working on a few designs I plan to submit myself. This video was perfect timing.
Do u Know what pencil do he uses?
I will ask!
@@okJLUV ok
Bruh thanks for the video, incredibly informative and interesting. Also where the heck did you learn Japanese and can you teach me.pls?!?!?!?!?
Yooooooo
going to sleep with this one, love you work but i will wait for the next
are other point, the expansion theme, is very important takes count the theme are meaning of the set, for sample the contest of this year is "dyali live" for sample galarian rapidash are can stay in glimglow forest meanly are walk to take care of nature, cramorant to fish arracuda or try to eat anythingk
in english version is difficult to see the temes because are mixed, but for sample the new expansion, of the mew, can see is like a "futuristic" city, these elements can see around in all cards
the special of jewery more cards are cutie, are soft, like a photo on are show the more cutte possible, other expanion are takes count the steampunk elements etc or other are see a lot of flowers
is very important pay atention to theme are meaning for can done the card, because the illustration of card are can feel are tell a history
That is very true! I love how each expansion has a new theme that all cards share. Genesect V Special Art is so closely linked to the city theme, with Mew as well, they're all linked in the same city and era + setting. It's a beautiful extra touch.
But... where's the ligma? The sugma? The chokema? Smh you've changed.
Those days are gone (until maybe like next week iunno)
Title: How is a pokemon card made
Video: Shows no process of making the physical card
response: damn bro that's crazy
Hello
Heya!!
smh pumping cp6 EXs
noooooo
Title is misleading .. it should be how a Pokemon artwork for a card is made. The actual process of making a pokemon card is different
I prefer not to speak, If I speak i am in big trouble
I would like to take credit in helping you make this video, even though I did nothing
You did nothing (except tell me to just DO IT)
And then all that work artists go through goes in the dumpster when they give them shit attacks. Rip
and then Lost Box brings them back to life >;D
