My niece was fined $400 for inadvertently bringing an apple in from the United States through customs yet they're allowing toxic sludge to be dumped deliberately into our waterways. Makes perfect sense.
I used to work on a river in the USA with an extremely similar story. Paper mill dumping dioxins into the river for decades. Eventually EPA stepped in, the paper mill is gone and you can now swim in and eat the fish after 20 years of rehab. It can be done.
Dad's family worked the board mill, Whakatane. Nan had 13 stillbirths all their after births at our homestead, Poroporo. A poplar tree is where they rest, green gage plum tree faces those poplars. Where they lived was polluted
Ngā mihi, Mihingarangi. Thank you for continuing to tell these stories. We cannot allow the quest for 'progress' to disregard environmental considerations or to ignore the health & well-being of our communities.
Shane Jones: "Ignore the cons to everything, as we won't be alive to experience them. Just make as much money as you can before you die, its someone elses problem when we're dead"
Agreed mate....but unfortunately this country has a deep centuries old history, wronging one particular race. This needs to be accepted before we can move on
I am one of 9 siblings. My youngest sibling born in Kawerau was our first to die from cancer in her 40s. Our second youngest also deceased from cancer was only months old when we moved there in the 1950s. Still 5 older siblings in good health sort of for our 70s 80s.
Stunning areas in nz which should never be treated like this! Typical of big money company's that dont want to pay to treat waste etc. Just like Dow Corning and teflon
Brilliant journalism , These factories are closing ?So they were failures ,in every way .! Listen up Shane .your korero is recorded . Thankyou Mihi n Annabelle
Yes, factual awful. But when I left school in 77 and got a job in the nearby dairy company, Tasman jobs were more HIGHLY sought after, those working there could earn great wages, their unions were strong, their whanau prospered.Participants in the destruction, not passive victims, hard as that may be to accept. WELL done Ngati Rangitihi for fighting long and hard for your awa, your whenua, your mana. And tbh I very much doubt anything permitted nowadays will be as environmentally and socially cavalier. Government's of all colours recognise risk to a far higher degree. Thank you for this journalism.
Why do these people not get charged for this this is actually evil, think how many people and wild life have lost their lives to this disgrace. Thats the very reason why Maori will do a better job protecting our rivers forest foreshores.❤
When will Tasman Pulp + Paper Mill + those NZ Govt MP's be held financially accountable for the decision to wipe out the use of NZ lakes + lands in the future.
And people mock the Maori for advocating for protecting the water ways. Shame on the crown Luxon and his cronies unethical behaviours are accelerating the unification and awareness of how much the crown has impacted Maori There will be reparations You might fool some people some of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
Great work Mihingarangi this is recent history that needs to be told. Money is what drives the policy that has always been pushed through our government.
Be grateful for your blankets you got in return! Shane says, but Shane blankets carried dis ease and death and your telling Kawerau whanau what to think, you should know better.
And that is exactly why the Resource Management Act is so important, National is in the throws of axing the Act. Fast track policy will undoubtedly have it's failures and mistakes, which will impact the environment and NZers. Naturally, National used the Public Works Act to cause this environmental disaster. Government should spend the $ Billion and fix it.
27:29 Not singular mate. Building on the land you stole from soldier's fighting your wars. Is apart of this too. Imagine that was your family living in that.
With our King gone, our ppl must stay united, bcos together we are stronger and adhering to what he wants for our ppl, it doesnt mean to say we continue to let the Govt steam roll over us, we will find a way, just keep going forward. KOTAHITANGA❤❤❤
A lot of locals made thousands from that mill,I know many of them ,and I could guarantee many of these people know exactly what was going on, but they were all happy to work there because the money was so good, now that its fucked they are crying about it,

Lmao. Jones talking about an "idealogical narrative" is next level hypocrisy.
