The Reality of Knife Attacks

  • The Reality of Knife Attacks is not what you see in Hollywood movies. If anyone tells you what they teach defending against a knife is guaranteed to work is lying.
Warning: This video contains graphic language.
Knife attacks are fast, chaotic, and brutal. Most self- defence systems teach memorized set of self defence techniques that do not address the reality of how a real knife attack presents itself.
In this clip, world-renowned self-defence expert Richard Dimitri discusses perhaps the most difficult knife attack to defend against with Chris Roberts, Founder of SAFE Violence Prevention & Self Defence.
The cheapest, easiest-to-gain and most common weapon used in violence is the knife (and other forms of edged weapons). Just as treacherous as a gun at close range, the knife is by far one of the deadliest tools used in violent confrontations - and we can easily find one in just about every kitchen.
Knife attacks are frightening. Because each situation has so many variables, there can never be any guarantee of the outcome for any self-defence system. But you can increase your chances of success and survival, even with all those variables at play.
Check out our newly released video, Rich & Roberts Knife Defence Drills by visiting, selfdefenceonl...

The raw way he's explaining everything is fantastic. He comes off as threatening when he shows what it's like and that really brings the point across that a knife fight is scary as hell.

The man speaks the truth. I used to be of the "school of thought" of meeting/following the force, c-grip and pass, until I faced a Shock Knife and realized that my emotional behavior and "school of thought" changed immensely. I faced an opponent that did not "feed" me a technique, but instead tried (and succeeded) in shocking (stabbing/slashing) me to death. I changed my approach to knife fighting that moment and seeked out the advice of experts like this. Thank God too. If you are still old school, follow this mans advice!

the reality... if someone really knows how to use a knife, the knife will be between your ribs and collapsing your lung from the back before you notice there was a threat. if someone pulls out a knife to show off the knife, if you run they probably wont chase you as they threatened you in an attempt to scare you off. if this is the case, easy just run away and you both win.

You keyboard Einsteins never cease to amaze me. I love when talking self defense there's always that one genius in the group "What if someone sneaks up on you and stabs you in the back?"... Really? Why even waste time and energy asking that ignorant question when you very well know that there is no technique to defend against that? Oh the intelligence... This type of knife defense is for when someone confronts/attacks you from the front with a knife and you see them coming. (And it's a bloody shame I even had to type that last sentence...)

All I saw in most videos is "Instructors" showing how to "Block" a sharp ass blade, though they did it in slow arm thrusts. This video shows just how ugly a pissed off person with a knife can be. There isn't any special uber defense tactics to not stop your arm, leg, face, neck, stomach or any other region of your body from being skinned/cut/stabbed or gutted open. Don't ever underestimate a deranged/pissed off individual with a bladed weapon intending to cause you harm/death. A armed individual with a knife is not going to be stupid enough to keep their arm out, they will retract and attack over and over and over till you look like a you became a thanksgiving turkey or worse.
Wanna see how fast you can be cut, give your friend a washable marker, wear a worn out t-shirt, tell him to attack you with the marker and try the so called "Defense tactics" and watch just how much mark lines your body will be full of.

I saw few very extreme knife attacks in person with death outcome and I had experience with few in my life, I saw many actually, but I will write most interesting one.
1.Most violent one I saw in person was 5 years ago. In front of one restaurant, three guys start arguing with two guys, one guy of that two pull out the knife and stab very fast more than 5 times the biggest guy in the middle. Guy who was stabbed was very street experienced obviuosly, he pulled out the gun and shoot him death on the middle of the parking. Whole situation happened in less than 30 second littelraly, so fast, I barley saw it and I was 10 meters from place. Guy with knife was so fast and so wild, no chances for defending, if you are ordinary. Guy with gun had luck too because other two start defending him, he had few seconds to pull out gun and shoot, definetly guys with experience on both side, this wasnt some ghetto, gangster or street bullshit, it was Mafia jobs. Guy who defended from knife was in perfect body position to protect stomach every stab were in arm, leg and hip area, single leg standing, so hard, you need to be pro for that, and to aim in head easily after attack. All five of them are from professional criminal organizations and that was on Balkan, so probably they have war experience too.
    2. Many years ago, I was teen. In front of fast food, guy pull out the knife and stab other one in neck, who actually excpected a fists fight, KNIFE WAS IN SLEEVE of attacker, nobody saw that, victim dead. This is very important to know, sometimes even when you dont see danger, danger exist, this situation helped me alot later.
    My personal situations.
    1. Location in front of club, night and dark. Second one most extreme which I saw, was life saving that time. Guy who attacked me, had knife in SLEEVE and it was very dark, I didn see imidietly, most dangers thing you can experience is when you dont see knife at all. Just because very strong memory of that second event, I glance on the guy hand in last moment and I saw just the top of the blade sticking out, just one second decided to start run instead of go in harmless "fists" fight. He ended with broken bottle of wine in his head, after many meters of chasing, I found empty bottle and on my luck threw it full power directly in his head from 2,3 meters distance. Attacker was unconsciousness after that and he ended in jail.
    2. Location, my friends bar. I was at one table at enterence, and 7,8 of my friends on bar chairs. attacker entered bar with fucking macheta, He stabbed four of them. I sneak behind him very slowly and punched him so hard with the chair in head, he was groggy after punch, and others knocked him out. Luckliy no one died, but some injuries was life threathing.
3.Location street. My two friends had problem with some guys, I was with them, after arguing one of other guys pull out fucking RAMBO KNIFE. They listened my advice and we started to run together in opposite direction, maybe we looked like cowards that time, because it was 3 of us and 2 of them, but remember its better to be coward sometimes.
To be clear, I am 37 years old, 230 pounds guy, with many years of street experience, all my stories was in young age, whole life in weight training and soccer, 400 pounds on deadlift or squat is joke for me, I can go in fight with anybody, but My advice when somebody pull out the knife, best thing I know to do is hard sprint, even whole mile if needed, if somebody pull out the gun sprint even harder and pray that he is not totally crazy idiot, or somebody with intention to kill you, I dont look in this bullshit defending videos on yt.

Hell the best case scenario, you'll still go to the ER, you'll likely be in horrible pain and constantly on edge from all the adrenaline, and then the police will probably arrest you for sending the loser to the morgue, where you'll have to get a (hopefully competent) lawyer who can prove you did in fact defend yourself, and then you'll have to live with the constant asking yourself "what if...what if...", it'll probably haunt your nightmares the the rest of your life. Moral of the story, you aren't running with your tail between your legs, you're not trying to get your balls cut off!

I nearly got stabbed once and this guy was already drunk so it simply ended with him having a broken arm and me having some minor slashes on the arm, imagine how it could have ended if he wouldn't have been drunk. What those techniques should teach you is the situation in which you can't run away. Long story short, simply run if you can.

a year and a half ago I was stabbed in the stomach by a homeless guy trying to steal things from my customers cars at my repair shop. I have 8 years of martial arts training, and was calm and confident enough to approach him in a controlled manner and try to figure out a peaceful way of handling the situation, when he suddenly produced a pocket knife and sucker stabbed me in the side. I never even saw the knife. Thankfully he ran off immediately and I was left standing there wondering "WTF just happened?"
on the surface it would seem that all my training had been a waste, but I truly believe that if I had not been confident to handle this guy in a fist fight, I would have engaged him in a more aggressive manner and been stabbed multiple times. Being calm and confident and God's good providence really saved my life.

    My real knife story:
I have successfully survived a knife attack by neutralizing the attacker. This is to talk bullshido.
The reality is: 9 guys surrounded me and the boss held a knife against me, and told me he is going to stab me now....
Image my imminent shock on my face. ( they were also kinda drunk, the boss had a bottle of whisky in the other hand. )
What I did? I talked myself out of it. I started joking( come on man, dont bother me with this, where are you going to party tonight? Have you seen those hot chick at the corner...)
After a 5 minute conversation, I made an excuse to the next bus which was coming...
If anybody wants a a STRONG counter against knife.. RUN or if you cant, TALK YOURSELF OUT.

    This video is fucking precise.
I'm from London & the knife attacks here are very common.
You get attacked by a guy with a knife? Then you must turn into a track runner.
Bit of advice if you're carrying a knife always try to carry the longest somewhere 10 inches & more I personally carry a 15 inch knife , only on the week nights & around certain areas where there's knife crimes. Infact 2 summers ago around 8pm I was walking through a back alley in a dodgy estate on my way to work this guy came out of a corner purposely bumped into me & when I apologised to him he thought I was an easy target so he pulled out of his inner coat pocket a 4 inch swiss blade as I saw him put his hand inside his coat I quickly pulled out my 15 inch.
You should of seen the look on the cunts face he was terrified I did not use it but I warned him stay back or get stabbed to death. He walked away knowing he was going to die.
Moral of the story the larger the knife the more intimidating you are to your opponent which then they become discouraged.

Nice to see someone being truthful about this stuff. I had an instructor years ago who got a lot of criticism for telling us that if you can't run away and have to fight against a knife, you should accept that you are going to get cut and offer up the least dangerous target. Essentially he promoted the idea of using the outside forearm or other such areas as sacrificial targets so you can stop any further attacks. The problem is the psychological barrier of allowing yourself to be harmed in that way.
The same thinking was behind a lot of baton defenses, allowing a fleshy part to be struck so you can close the distance and blitz the opponent. I've actually used this second bit of training in real life and it worked very well, but I've never had to use the knife defense idea and I don't ever want to try it out.

Real life knife attacks are much more brutal and scary than the average person realizes. That's why cops don' waste time shooting any bastard who appears to have a knife in their hand and takes the smallest step forward. There is no room for error, if you're facing someone who is in a blind rage and determined to close distance. I've had a gun pulled on me, and I've also been shot. But when someone pulled out a really huge hunting knife out on me, and quickly advanced towards me, I never forgot that feeling. You can feel the intensity and the rage, from someone who means business. Using a knife is much like a gun, in that you should never pull it out, unless you intend to use it. That's how idiots get their sh** taken away and used on them, because they didn't mean business. If someone means business, they will be on you like flies on sh** in a quick second. That's how you know someone means business...they don't think twice about using it and they go absolutely ballistic with it. People shouldn't confuse the pretenders with such folks.

The reality of knife attacks is that if someone wants to kill you and thinks it through then he will stab you point blank before you know there is a fight. The same goes for getting shot. If they want you dead with premeditation then you die. If someone pulls a knife on you in a club or on the street they usually want something from you and want to threaten you. If its a drug or alcohol induced murderous rage then they will most likely telegraph their movements to some degree. Your best defense is to kick out their knee before they get close. If they get close with the intent to kill then there is no technique that can help. Reality is though, most people with knives want to threaten you. Then the techniques will work. However, If they want you dead then you are probably screwed anyways. Good luck.

Knife attacks pretty much cannot be countered at even 20 feet unless you have a gun already drawn.
I would say the best possible chance at such a close range, is to try to tackle and overpower the attacker, to get on top of them and hope for the best.
Maybe they drop their weapon in the fall, maybe they stab you once and can't pull their knife back to stab again because it's pressed between you and them, especially if they stab you from the front rather than the side.
That's a better chance than you will have in a standing position. Plus, they can no longer put their body weight or large swinging motions into the stab, and it gives you a better chance of pinning their arm against the ground to keep from continuing to stab you.
It may be difficult to avoid getting stabbed, but you have to try your hardest to make sure they don't have the chance to stab and slash repeatedly, which is easier said than done. It's a bad situation you have to try to keep from getting worse. You might have to take a stab or two, but they might also be non fatal and it's better than the alternative of doing nothing.
The main issue with being stabbed though is obviously the pain. That kind of pain makes it very difficult to do any kind of logical thinking in the heat of the moment. Your body just wants to tense up and grasp the wound in agony, but that's not what's going to save you.

knife attacks can in fact be countered if you have training in things like Filipino knife fighting, Escrima, apache knife fighting, Krav Maga, special forces training etc. what these videos teach you is about how the average person attacks but in all the arts i mentioned they teach you how to deal with any type of attacker

    • @stonie8113
      @stonie8113 10 лет назад +3

houseofaction I agree with you being that I studied a little escrima myself, but a lot of times not even those arts prepare you for someone who is swinging a knife at you wildly or has you pinned with one arm and stabbing you with the other. In SOME cases an untrained attacker is more dangerous than a trained one.

houseofaction if you're instructor has a video of some sort i would definitely like to see that because a lot of times especially dealing with attack like the gentleman demonstrated in the video those are hard extremely difficult to counter and sometimes you just have to pray that they give you an opening for an disarmament or escape.

    • @houseofaction
      @houseofaction 10 лет назад

Jaron White i will give it to you that Those attacks are difficult to counter for an average Knife fighter. but you must realize that the average adult male can only move their hands so fast. the average adult male can do 7 to 10 slices in a second to the average person this seems incredibly fast and yes it is quick but your average trained Knife fighter can slash slice or cut a person something like 15 to 20 times in a second. those two speeds are incredibly different. once a person starts doing free style drills and moves onto aggressive free style drills it is just a matter of time before the person begins to be able to apply the speed advantage to countering. if you were to go to the Philippines and watch the police train in knife fighting they demonstrate these same exact aggressive knife attacks. and then show the much more experienced Knife fighters countering each and every technique.speed does matter and it doesn't matter how aggressive you are. if your opponent is 3 times faster than you.

His student is probably thinking "Hey fucko, you owe me a new t-shirt after this is done".

agreed. My sensei always said to stick to the basics on the street. The fancy stuff is okay in the dojo or in competitions/demonstrations, but on the street, you gotta stop dancing and start fighting.

Chris speaks the truth, I have been attacked twice by people with knifes, got cut twice, but they people got hurt very badly and will think twice about pulling a knife ever again, you have to practice this stuff and not all being nice and compliant.

I've always taught vulnerable folks that the best self defense technique is a well timed, well reasoned argument. It's pretty hard to stab someone if they've already convinced you that it's probably not in your best interest to do so. Hope that helps. Ciao.

Since no system is "foolproof" then neither is his...no system has all the answers we must collaborate to find answers to save lives from needless or unwarranted harm. I had a stroke 2 years ago and can't physically instruct much, I try to help some here and there. I will try to get a student to work with me and get a video on this often perplexing demonstration and possible means (there are more than he showed) to defend that type of attack. I survived several bladed attackers..it was hell!

I have defended against several occasions against knife attacks...it is true it is a blur, but there is one thing most attackers don't know and that is they focus on their weapon so much that it leaves many holes in their defense. It is scary, but training under pressure can acclimate your mind to instantly go into action! I did see the attack coming (initially) after that it is all touch and go! I just don't want to spread false hope, but we must maintain hope it drives us to survive bad day

First knife video that has a point so far that i've seen. As he said, you can forget all the fancy do this and that shit around. Worst possible situation is the guy with rage coming towards you or being 1m or closer to you. All you can do Is hope that you can make something that you can run away 10-15 seconds and scream for help, since possible you've been stabbed, maybe multiple times. And you just hope that those 10-15sec you can run away and scream before you lose your ability to do something

This is possibly one of maybe 5-6 truthful video out there regarding what will actually happen when attacked by a knife, maybe there are others, yet to see them. The speed aggression angles violence of attacker is never displayed and the way attackers are portrayed at being easily deterred or subdued by one or two strikes by defender is just rubbish. This guy talking about the sound debilitating you is spot on

This guy is seriously enjoying the spotlight. Like those teachers in high school that are fucking THRILLED that they have you for an hour and you can do nothing but sit there and listen.

Yes, I recently just started taking Modern Arnis. I'm enjoying it Big time. The great thing about Modern Arnis is that it is applicable to real life confrontation scenarios.

I have been asked by people what I support on youtube and on the net. I have to tell them that as a man who has been attacked with knives, bats and sticks, I would not waste hard earned money on 99% of the crap out today! This guy makes the most sense of anyone I have ever seen, other than myself. LOL
