My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. We stopped ordering alcoholic beverages at restaurants. Only a drink every couple of weeks at home. Amazing money saver and better for health. Also cut out fruit juice and soda. Only water and tea.
back in the day, A GROUP OF US WOULD GO OUT to eat 2-3 times a week.
we never ordered drinks. we got the stink eye and lousy service from many waiters.
after the meal. we always called over the manager to applaud or excoriate the wait staff.
I get nice prepared food at the supermarket, super cheap, a box wine, call nit a nice night at home

Went to US recently, it blows my mind how expensive the food is and its probably the worse food out of any 1st world country.

@@user-db4ke3if6t Crazy you say that, my husband is from an Amish community, he is german Mennonite but his sect or denomination they just don’t have a TV in the house or don’t borrow or use credit and a few other practices. But they always cooked from scratch and bought from their amish store or farmed themselves. He has 7 other siblings and his mother is in her 60s and looks they look beyond beautiful, they’re all almost angelic looking.
I stopped buying restaurant food. It’s just not worth my money anymore.

Definitely would never shop at Target for food. The best bets are a traditional grocery store only shopping for on sale items or a "no sales but good prices" store like Aldi and Trader Joe's.

I switch back and forth between Netflix and Hulu...Have had Hulu for a couple of years now and almost never use it. I really should cancel it. It's on auto pay and I'm almost afraid to look and see how much it's gone up in that time. Now I'm just thinking I'll hold onto it until the next season of Only Murders In The Building...which is all a watched last year...and THEN cancel it.
I cancelled mine 3/1/2020. Made a difference financially and with my productivity.
I mostly watch utube anyway, so I find my subscriptions of less and less value and have eliminated most of them. Cancelled cable a decade ago.

I’ve completely stopped getting pizza from chains. Low quality greasy junk that costs $20 for a large pizza now. Take your $20 to a local family owned pizza place. The pizza will be much better and honestly the same price as the fast food type pizza. There’s like 10 family owned pizza shops within 3 miles of my house too

My hometown has excellent delicious authentic Italian restaurants, so if I want pizza that's where I'd go. Although if it's just for me, I buy a Jack's Pizza at Walmart.

How about pure bred dogs that cost thousands? My family has always had good luck and happy years with dogs that came from a shelter for much less money.
My brother and his now wife bought a shih tzu before they got married. When they moved and lived abroad they left the puppy to me. My gosh how I expensive taking care of a pet. I like pets especially puppies but now that I started budgeting I know now how much I could have saved without taking care of a pet 😅 but I love him. Clingy but he’s all fine. He’s well taken care of.

Agree somewhat, disagree otherwise. ANY dog will cost you a ton of money. I remember seeing a video that put ownership cost at like $1200 a year. It's not EVERY year, but emergencies come up and they are very expensive even if you average it out. I remember our vet telling me it would cost $800/yr for vaccinations for our shelter cat. Hell, cats used to be basically free! Anyway, averaged out over the life of a pet, the price of a pure bred might not come to all that much per year. MIGHT, I mean, because some breeders charge absolutely crazy amounts, and I'm not really addressing the lunatic opportunists among them.

The thing I stopped buying is fast food. It use to be okay when I could go get a quick burger for $1.00-$2.00 but now it cost close to $5-$6 and a meal is over $10.

You really blew it with your comment on thrift stores, George. As a person who was required to wear quality clothes for work, I thrift. A clean white shirt, washed and ironed $2., a designer $2,000. designer cashmere sports jacket, never worn, $5. plus $45. for tailoring. I have 6 of them from different top rung designers. 1) you have to know good clothes and 2) you need to look at a piece of clothing in natural light, making sure you check common wear spots (cuffs, elbows, collars and seats on pants. Why spend twelve K when you can get the same for $300, all inclusive? Be frugal!
Recently lost weight. I went thrifting because the colors that were in stores weren't for me. I got the same name brands for a quarter of the price.

Absolutely! Years ago, I finished college and got my first job at a law firm. I prayed, and went shopping at Salvation Army. Found 3 Suits and several separates by Pendleton and Jones New York for under $100. Total. A few months later, a colleague told me, "I wish I could dress as well as you, but I can't afford to."

I think I budget £100 a month for clothes. But that allows for new shoes, walking shoes can be £80+, a big coat can take that up.
Being pregnant I needed to buy new bras and bigger clothes etc. we split this money between me and my partner and I'd say we end up spending easy £6-800 a year on clothes. Do try to buy quality clothing but things like socks etc need replacing from time to time.
Depends what you do, I have work shoes that are $300. Work boots another $300. Coat, $300. But if you have an office job in say Florida, then there's not much variety of clothes you need.
I'm probably right there with you. I only need to replace socks and underwear every few years, because I've got plenty of them, and shoes every few even though I walk miles per day in my job. I've got more than I need of everything else for the rest of my life because I don't keep up with fashion and don't care who knows it. Yet all my stuff looks fine, because I wash it in cold water and I never use the dry-cleaners(that can wear out your stuff years and years earlier) except for my comforter.
I color my own hair. Light blonde 9N Loreal Age Perfect. 15 bucks. I always get complements and the product doesn't dry out my hair.
I rarely buy candy and sodas. They’re not good for me and it’s an expense I don’t need. Bringing my own food to work saves me from using the vending machine and is better for me too!

We stopped hiring a cleaning crew and a landscaper/gardener. We are doing it ourselves. Yes, it’s more work but we save $1000 a month

I used to treat myself to go food once a week. It use to cost $13.50, then it went to $21.50, and on top of that, they want a tip for to go food.
British guy here... Budgeting food is one of the simplest ways to cut spending. I bulk buy soup cans for my lunches and partner them with a slice of bread for lunch, simple, quick, nutritious and can be delicious. Otherwise a simple ham and cheese sandwich will do, no extras! My lunch total is about $10 a week, once converted from British Pounds to Dollars. Evening meals I bulk make, roast a whole chicken, can last 4-5 days, or buy 4 Chicken breasts, butterfly and season them, bake or fry them and partner them with some loose hand-picked veg from the grocery store, again simple, inexpensive, nutritious and delicious. Omelettes are another favourite, bulk buy eggs, even add veg again to them, add ham and cheese for flavour, amazing! Happy Budgeting everyone!
It kills me to see my team going out to get lunch every day while I sit with my sandwich from home. Not because I'm missing out, but because if I am going to the length of saving on lunch as the boss then...

Great video. We are all seeking for financial independence and a better way of life. This is not difficult to achieve with savvy investing, a frugal lifestyle, and cautious budgeting. I'm glad I learned early on to work hard for financial independence.

Family restaurants have low revenue margin believe it or not.. it’s also very physically demanding. The problem is as you mentioned, the overhead cost (i.e. utility, rent, wagws for front and back of the house, delivery for produce, the ingredients, third party delivery service, CC merchant fees, high tax and license..etc) is very high. When anything goes up in price we are affected . A lot of restaurants are closing because it’s not worth it.

I spent more than two decades working in the music industry (I started with Capital Records when I was 18 in 1983). The internet changed EVERYTHING when it comes to concerts. Prior to the mid-90s, concerts were designed to boost album sales and that's it. They were either a break-even or possibly even a loss for record companies. I used to see bands like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Kiss, Adam Ant, Winger, etc. for about $8-$10 per ticket. After the internet, Napster, Apple, Spotify, et al, concerts were no longer designed to boost album sales, instead they became profit centers. You can't make a profit at $10 per ticket, so you have to bump that up to $150-$500 per ticket.
I stopped buying expensive cell phone service. Not only did it get way too costly, but I didn't want to commit to a long-term contract. Now I use Mint Mobile at $15 month and it works perfectly. I don't know why some people are still paying hundreds of dollars for being locked into a cell phone contract when there's a cheaper alternative that works just as well.

I agree. Their ads are getting longer and longer and I know it’s happening on purpose to drive people nuts and just go “screw this” and get the paid subscription.
Yup, I stopped watching YT much less. I noticed ads on TV Sets are much worse and longer. I started downloading stuff and skip YT all together.
There's various adblockers that will put a stop to such silliness.

I didn't so much stop buying things as I changed the way I get them. I quit buying premade cold brewed coffee, and started making it myself cause the price went up like 60% from 5.50 to 8.50/bottle. Now I make my own at home for about 10 bucks a week.

The only time I get an AirBnB now is when we're going to the beach, which is yearly, otherwise it's hotels everywhere else.
We priced out making cold brew and buying pre made. Was about the same. We always get the pre-made stuff at Cub..it's always on sale.... about $4.99/bottle most brands, except Starbucks. Check at Cub!

@@happyhomeandsavings Amazon has all kinds of plastic and glass set-ups for making it. You get an included steel filter, fill with coffee, plop it into a custom jar, leave it in the fridge or out overnight or longer depending how strong you want it. They're not expensive.
The craziest thing to me with clothes is the price at thrift stores specifically. In just the past few years, I've seen clothing prices at my local thrift store skyrocket. I remember going there and getting me a decent jacket and a nice pair of blue jeans for about $5 each. Now, most jackets or pairs of pants are $12-$18. And sometimes even stuff like worn-out t-shirts will be priced at $7-$10. The thrift store prices have gone up to the point that buying clothes from a place like Ross or TJ Maxx only costs a couple dollars more now.
So that's just absolutely insane to me.
Goodwill is Greedwill. They just have junk now. They put everything online that is half decent
I just bought an outfit I needed specifically for a job at Goodwill last week. Pants were $7 and the shirt was $2. Seemed like a good deal to me.
My wife has cut my hair for the last 20 years. Zero cost!
We have a local beauty school. The students are supervised and the haircuts are reasonably priced. I tried cutting my own hair and it didn't work for me.

I have been a thrifter for 20 yrs; business and casual clothes at great deals
We have a food salvage store near us. We get things that are close to or just past the “best by date”. And I checked some prices online for what we got today at that store. I’ve saved 50-90% !! Woohoo
I do the same at Grocery Outlet. I taste a little of the canned food before dumping it into a pot or whatever, and if it tastes fine, I trust it. It is after all literally BOILED before canning in sterilized containers. Food often lasts far far longer than the "best by" date. People have eaten cans decades old with no ill effect, so if mine are a few months or even a few years out of date, I'm not sweating it in the least.
We Are in Unchartered Financial Waters! every day we encounter challenges that have become the new standard. Although we previously perceived it as a crisis, we now acknowledge it as the new normal and must adapt accordingly. Given the current economic difficulties that the country is experiencing in 2024, how can we enhance our earnings during this period of adjustment? I cannot let my $680,000 savings vanish after putting in so much effort to accumulate them.
Keeping some gold is usually a wise decision. You would be better off keeping away from equities for a bit or, even better, seeking advice from an expert given the current market conditions and everything that is at risk with the current economy.

Started making my own jerky about 5 years ago. people though i was crazy, but loved the end product. Now, I make beef and pork jerky. Usually 5 Lbs at a time, and they usually buy the meat for me. I knew i had a good thing when my son stopped buying it at the stores, and asked me to make some for him.
I no longer buy Heinz baked beans.... ridiculous prices 😂
Even Bush's beans is getting more expensive. 20 years ago it was like $1/can, now it is $2.50/can CDN.

I do pay for Amazon Prime. I utilize prime video often, and I do not pay for other streaming services. Though the ads are frustrating, it's a better value to pick an old 80's flick for a movie night rather than dropping $75 at the theater for one film. That cost would cover 7 months of my prime membership.

Learn to do it yourself. Jerky making has several steps, especially if you want it flavorful, but each of those steps is easily learned.
Very much cheaper than buying. And i get to control quality.
My favorite savings so far is throwing my son's birthday parties in the backyard. I'm not sure why but the children's parties are insane. We are already paying for the house and the yard let's use it. My son is 4 he does not care where the party is so long as he gets to play with his friends, has cake/cookies, and gets to fling tissue paper out of gift bags like a whirlwind. We spend maybe $50 on the whole thing every year (location, decorations, food, and entertainment) and get compliments all year about how fun and relaxing last year's party was. I think that's mainly because the parents are not in an overstimulated nightmare arcade/discovery zone, etc. or on constant alert making sure their kid isn't the one trapped in the bounce house that was assembled by a disinterested teenager.
We even go wild with the themes; star wars day, Bluey, Thomas the train, cars, etc. (we almost always get the decorations for free from local acquaintances or dirt cheap at consignment sales from someone that already did that theme, and the public library has every novelty cake pan you can imagine available for free).
Also we adore the "Friday night pizza for dinner" ritual and after finding a local chain with delicious pizza we discovered if you do the 30 second questionnaire you can get a free vat of their amazingly delicious ranch for free ($10+ retail, it's amazing and I am allergic to tomatoes so ranch is a staple in this house), so we haven't bought salad dressing in the last 2 years!!
I do refuse to buy facial tissues, paper napkins or paper towels. We have a lovely washer and dryer why would I repeatedly buy the same things when I'm already doing the laundry, just use fabric napkins (again dirt cheap at estate or thrift sales), hankies (soft flannel toddler (i.e. to small for an actual standard pillow) pillowcase cut and stitched or the cloth baby wipes we used before), and actual fabric towels better absorbency and they never tear off the roll with random places (we actually just reuse the microfiber cloths we used in our son's cloth diapers but even new towels are way cheaper than re buying paper) 🤨.
Kroger and Walmart both sell a packet of pizza dough mix for $1. It is ready in 5 minutes and you pat it into the pan with your hands. We top it with shredded mozzarella, a smear of spaghetti sauce, leftover tidbits of cooked sausage, hamburger, frozen pineapple, etc. 20 minutes later it is cooked. It is a fun, family activity. Of course we could make crust from scratch but too lazy.

Haircuts. Got tired of forking out the money, so I forked out for a really decent clippers and do it myself.
Say “no way” to expensive areas. The Nashville/Boston/San Francisco areas are ridiculous for housing prices - but living in the Midwest enables me to have a huge house for a reasonable price. My pedicure 3 days ago was $25. When housing prices are reasonable, so are services (like salon, lawn care, etc.). Avoiding expensive concerts got easier because I’d have to drive 2-5 hours to get there.

I have always been frugal. I don’t buy any of these things anymore with the exception of some streaming, most of which, I have canceled. I feel a sense of peace. The last clothing I bought was at a buy by the kilo used clothing store in Europe. And… much cheaper than all fizzies, Soda Stream.

Wow! The bowling one surprised me. I just went a couple weeks ago and for 3 people for a hour plus shoe rentals for everyone it was $18.
I went recently in Vermont and it cost me and my son $60 for one hour and two pairs of shoes. Did not have $60 worth of fun... My son is 7 and he hated it because he wasn't good at it. Haha

My wife and I were just talking about this the other day. When we were first married in 1985, we would often order a medium one topping from Domino's for $7.44 (we ordered it so often, I will never forget the amount). I just checked the Domino's website and you can get any two medium pizzas (with 2 toppings) for $6.99 each delivered. Seriously, almost 40 years later and it's the same price?
Yeah pizza was always something I saw as super overpriced growing up, but 20 years later they've not changed at all and are quickly seeming more reasonable vs other options!

The problem with recent price increases is not, necessarily, even the price increases for most of the items listed here. The real issue is the price increase for usual necessities that lower income households must buy to even function, especially if said households don't receive any kind of assistance for them. (This is why food banks are being overwhelmed.) Some examples:
1. Almost all products for babies.
2. Basic pantry staples (on a cost per ounce standpoint) such as pasta, rice, etc.
3. Meat prices. (Even the basic one, normal, non-organic, ground beef.)
4. Fruits and vegetables. (Especially over the winter, due to imports due to the transport issues related to the Panama Canal.)
5. Basic health, cleaning, self-care products. (Examples: Over the counter medications, vinegar / bleach, and shampoo / soap.)
The pandemic began "supply chain issues", and the transport industry never recovered. When you combine this with all "service" based items (such as the video's salon visits, or ... child care... ), the bottom line costs for a household have increased substantially over the median rate of wages in lower paid professions.
The reason items such as this video's make the lists people make, and such... videos are made for content, is because the "middle class" is now beginning to actually feel the effects of the widening income, and net worth, gap that has been growing for decades (when looked at over the entire period). And, when the "middle class" ceases spending on "luxury items", downgrades "quality", begins "thrifting", it pushes the "lower classes" into... where, exactly?

For me, Costco is the answer for everything, especially when things are on sale, I have patience and freezer.
In England Costco prices have risen so much they're practically the same as the grocery stores. I used to get my Pepsi half price by buying in bulk but it is cheaper per bottle at Tesco now.
I go there to eat. Their pizza and hot dogs are a steal.
My way of saving money was to leave the usa 12 years ago. Life has been so much better for me in Oman and Singapore and Turkiye and Thailand and Portugal.
I currently live in Thailand and my total budget is 1500 usd per month which includes my expensive global medical insurance for every country except the usa. If I add usa to my medical, my price would increase by about 5k per year.
I pay 550 usd per month for a 2 bedroom house with my own small private swimming pool and the rent includes pool service and awesome unlimited wifi. My Utils total about 100 usd per month.
If I decide to stop splurging and move to a 1 bedroom condo and stop eating out so much, I could probably get my total expenses down to 1k usd per month.
Amen to the salon prices being crazy. I went to a hair school for a couple years and after listening to the instructors I learned a lot about cutring hair. Have been cutting my own hair for 2 years. When I want a new style I watch RUclips videos.
And paying to have someone colored it is ridiculous. It's not hard to do and costs about $10/month.
I go to a local discount bumps n’ dents grocery store! Mostly all this same products as my local grocery store, but things are dented or cereal boxes have rips in them, but the food is perfectly great. I can fill a grocery cart for $100 rather than $300-$400!!

Yes beef jerky has always been too much and 90% of the time it's meh at best for quality. Buy a round roast and make you're own, cheaper. Especially if you have the space to get a freezer and buy beef in bulk direct from a farmer. Way better quality too.
I just checked what we are paying for streaming services per month and we are at $38/month. Some are paid annually, some monthly, but those are the total annual costs divided by 12. This is for a family of four.
I don't buy Almond Milk anymore. Weird one? Yes maybe. But when I broke down the cost vs. the cost of making it myself I realized buyng it was FIVE TIMES the cost of making it myself...1/5 the protein (almond) content...and it's EASY to make...and mine contains ONLY almonds and water...No xanthan gum...no sugar...no weird ingredients.

Keep in mind that I'm was comparing my costs to Elmhurst Unsweetened Almond milk. which is 18 almonds (5 grams of protein) per 8oz almond milk. It's identical to the version I make.
Most almond milks are only 3.5 almonds (1 gram protein) per 8oz.
I did not compare my cost to the more diluted versions because it wouldn't be "apples to apples".

Frozen pizzas with 1 topping are $6 and most taste like cardboard. I can get a large pepperoni pizza from a local chain for $6-7. My local hotspot offers gigantic pizza bagels with up to 5 toppings for $5. Not sure how they make a profit, but not my problem. If I want pizza I'll have someone else do the cooking.

Best advice ever for the pizza! I make it a thing with my daughter and my husband like, let's get pizza and go pick it up ourselves, let's go out get some fresh air and if possible take the dogs in the back with us :p because why not?
We work full time, run around to make dinner, take the dogs to play,trying to keep a tiny human alive, keep ourselves hydrated, healthy, etc that some Thursdays or Fridays... I just don't want to cook. I recommend going with family businesses instead of chains when possible, so you also contribute to that family's economy when you don't want to cook at home

It was always exciting going for the drive to pick up the pizza on Friday evening as a kid. Dad is going to pick up the pizza now, both kids run to the car to join. Fight over shotgun to have the privilege of holding the warm pizza box on your lap on the way back.
The old time food that was eaten during the depression is the way to go to save some money. They even canned their food from the garden. I make my own kefir for instance.

I’m in the top single digit percentile income bracket in the US…no way in hell am I spending more than $150 for a seat to a concert and it better not be nose bleed. I only buy beef jerky for my emergency kit and buy it in bulk when it’s on sale from Sam’s. I keep bottled water but only for my emergency kit. I do rotate it. I don’t eat out. Sodas kept only for migraines. Can’t get coffee down when I have one & doctor said caffeine helps the medicine. I buy my groceries through the apps. If I go over-budget, I prune my list before I go pick it up. Use digital coupons…especially when you can use them 5x.

My husband works for GP. Sam's and Costco brand paper towels and toilet paper are both GP products. Toilet paper is the highest quality northern toilet paper and paper towels are the highest quality Brawny. Save some money and buy the store brand when shopping Sam's and Costco for these paper products.
