  • Exploring Transylvania (German: Siebenbürgen or Transsilvanien) has been a memorable experience. The region's untouched nature is perfect for hiking. The forests are teeming with wildlife, and I was fascinated to learn that Romania is home to the largest population of bears in Europe (6000+ brown bears). Knowing that bears and wolves roam these woods added an exciting edge to my hikes. The German influence, brought by the Transylvanian Saxons, is evident everywhere. Walking through the medieval streets feels like stepping back in time. The fortified churches and beautiful architecture are breathtaking.
    Historical Background
The historical charm of Transylvania is also captivating. The immigration of German settlers to Transylvania began in the 12th century during the reign of the Hungarian King Géza II (1141-1162). These settlers, later known as the Transylvanian Saxons, were invited to colonize and economically develop the area. They brought with them their knowledge and skills in agriculture, crafts, and trade, which led to the flourishing and establishment of many towns and villages in Transylvania. To protect themselves from invasions and raids by various hordes, the settlers constructed fortified churches, which became a distinctive feature of the region. They served as places of worship and as defensive strongholds, contributing to the unique cultural and architectural heritage of Transylvania.
