Crit failure (sort of) on both ends of the die. That's really interesting. That and the cost of losing PSP on failure makes me think Psionics is supposed to be a risky sort of spell casting. Definitely not something for every player or table, but I think there's some players who would love it.
I like the partial success mechanic of rolling a 1. People seem to either love or hate psionics. I always thought they were out of place in "regular" D&D outside of Dark Sun.
@@oldgrognardsays Yeah, Dark Sun is the only setting I've heard of, outside of more Sci-fi based ones, that seems to integrate them from the ground up. Everywhere else I've seen them they're usually a weird tacked on secondary feature that doesn't jive with the whole.
This is where the Psionics system falls apart for me. I just… don’t like it, design-wise. I don’t like the (relative) high chance of failure as opposed to spell casting classes, and I double-plus especially don’t like bad things happening when players roll a nat 20. I get this is in line with the proficiency system, but I’m not crazy about that either; at least it doesn’t happen as often as a Psionicist using class abilities. In my game we just did away with power scores and treated the powers as spells and PSP’s as spell points. But I was never crazy about this either, it seemed too far the other way.
I never liked the high chance of failure either. I always thought it would have been better if they would have raised all of the power scores by 5 or so, especially running the house rule with 20 or higher power scores.
