      I love Japanese but I understand that kanji isn't easy but honestly learning no language will be all easy some things might be easy other things not so much so it's weird to though to say you dislike Japanese or Chinese because of the writing system since most times if you really want to learn it and try you will ☺

      Nice video. I've been an off and on learner of Japanese and used to write down everything I could for practice. It's something I definitely got out of in more recent times, but watching your video has got me thinking I should get back to it. I like how you use jisho.org for stroke orders. Good idea!
      For studying these days, I've used a few different resources, mostly apps on my phone. Jisho.org is something I go to if I need to look up a word. I used Duolingo when they released the Japanese lessons. It didn't really go far enough, though, seeing as it's kind of an incomplete release. LingoDeer is a better app in most respects. It introduces kanji early on, but gives you the option to have as much or as little kanji as you desire. Plus, the word notes and learning tips really help with understanding grammar and nuances of the language. Tae Kim's Learning Japanese app is a good study guide as well as Kanji Study and Yomikata Z. Other than that, I try to look up stories and text (easy ones right now) to help with reading and listening if it's read out loud.

      Lin / Basically do the same and in addition, I take full advantage of free online learning tools such as Duolingo and Memrise. Though not perfect yet, the concept of Gamification works great in foreign language learning in my humble opinion. Would love to know what you think about somewhat unconventional 21st-century ways of learning, miss.:p
      When memorising new vocabulary, typing new words or phrases with your PC and smartphone virtual keyboard seem to help a lot just like taking notes with your own hand.
      P.S: Congratulations to 18k subscribers! Hooray! Way to go! :D

    I just started my Japanese learning journey about a month ago. I'm using Heisig's method to dive into Kanji so I can't pronounce all of the ones I'm learning yet. Whenever I write them I try to picture the meaning of the Kanji in my head. For convenience, I bought a bunch of exercise books with big squares (that early primary school students here usually use for Math or Chinese) and write them over and over. I love it because it's so therapeutic!

    • @chopstikku887
      @chopstikku887 6 лет назад +4

      YES Heisig is an amazing tool for kanji and use Kanji Koohii online too which accompanies it! But make sure not to neglect grammar or other parts of the language. I was too fascinated by kanji that I didn't study any other Japanese and I fell behind haha :)

    • @sarahabdulrazak
      @sarahabdulrazak 6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the reminder! I am currently doing some grammar courses from Genki, Memrise, Lingodeer and reading up several other resources as I go. I haven't checked out Kanji Koohii yet, but Memrise has some kanji courses as well so I'm pairing that with Heisig's stories. I'm also using a small chunk of my time to watch very simple kiddie shows in Japanese (I love the Hello Kitty and Cinamoroll series). It kinda sucks that even paying full attention to simple kids' shows in Japanese is taxing at this point, but I'm gonna soldier through it!

    • @wingsgamingfans5850
      @wingsgamingfans5850 5 лет назад +1

      If you are learning heisig. 6months should be the maximum time.
      And not just recognition but also production.
      To master the production skill, randomly make flashcards of primitives and write as many kanji that uses that primitive.
      English to kanji and kanji to English flashcards are not enough.
      If you are given a primitive, you should at least able to dictate all the kanji that it associates.

    I am really impressed with your videos. Kanji is even hard for Japanese people. Recently, since we are too rely on the function of the smartphone, we are not good at writing Kanji. I’ve been learning English for a long time. There are far too many words that I have to acquire. So I am also struggling with it. Then I found that the good method to acquire words that is to find the word of synonyms or antonyms. In this case, 減↔︎増、薄↔︎濃、like I did, it is more effortless to associate with the meaning of the word.

    Totally agreed ... writing (I prefer typing on either laptop/iPad) helps memorizing A WHOLE LOT ...
    新しい言語を学ぶのが大好きです! (Just learnt the 'gerund' form of a verb in Japanese a few days ago.... )
    [I love learning a new language.]
    Just a bit of my tip about writing 漢字(かんじ ,kanji, Chinese characters) ...
    I like to write with my left hand (I am not left-handed) with stroke sequence other than the formal way.
    It helps you memorize them too (due to the 'dual-processing' of the formal way and the 'odd way') to write.
    Forza / 頑張って/加油 / 'add oil'
    (heard that 'add oil' was accepted as the translation of 'hang in there' (加油) a few weeks ago)

    I used to study Japanese by writing comics for my language exchange partner. I tried to learn words and phrases that were funny to me, include new things I learned in the stories, and try to find the words in Japanese to express what I wanted. I'd often end up with something arcaic or unusual, and then my friend would teach me the more natural way to say it. I thought it was important to give context to things so I would remember them. In some ways that worked, because I still remember most of it even though I rarely have a chance to use it, but in other ways I did not get very far. Perhaps including something methodical like writing out examples would have been okay. I only ever did that very early on when learning hiragana and common kanji. I would sometimes try to translate songs or childrens stories, but I would always end up half inventing my own story through misunderstanding lol. Or my friend would not be able to explain what a line in a song meant, because it was abstract even in Japanese.

    I have a book as well, in which I write all my Kanji and some compounds I feel comfortable to use or which are generally important but after writing it down I insert the Kanji into an App called Anki on my tablet and so it's very easy to write it and rewrite it without using up too much paper. furthermore the app tells you which Kanji you should refocus on if you haven't seen it for a while ... it's a very time and labor intensive thing to do but I can keep track of all the Kanji I learned and if I feel like one lesson was from a very long time ago I can simply study it again :)

I'd like to see how you study other aspects of the language, like vocab and grammar. Also -- when it comes to kanji, do you memorize all the onyomi and kunyomi readings (even for kanji with like 20 of them), or do you prefer the idea of learning kanji by learning vocab that include that kanji, especially the most common words?
    Keep up the great work! I'm super happy I finally checked out your channel after following you on tumblr for a while now, it's super inspiring!

    I really enjoyed watching this video :) Your handwriting is gorgeous! Keep up the great work! I also really like your formatting and I could take a few things in terms of cutting down my studies from watching you write. I feel as if I am the opposite of most Japanese learners; I don't really like using textbooks, yet I do like structure when I learn anything. I learn best by doing things, and while I did reference grammar sites and videos in the beginning, I learn Japanese mostly from reading from natural material (games, anime, short novels, etc). So, just comes to show that everyone is different, but we are all trying to get to the same goal. I am currently going back and learning kanji with kanji compounds as I am learning new vocab (I started using a monolingual dictionary last summer), so I am still getting used to things, and trying to settle on a set format for my notes. Because my formats change as I learn new things, it can be tedious, but this video has made me really want to slow down and and think of how I will approach things. Thanks so much for sharing your process! And best of luck with your studies!

    Stroke order memorization isn't necessary if you know how the kanji are written and the radicals are written

    Maybe that's a stupid question, but - do you write left-to-right, but fill the notebook right-to-left? Is it a standard/obligatory way of doing it (when not writing vertically)? 'Cause I've seen another "Japanese notes" video of yours and you were flipping the notebooks left-to-right.

    Hello, Linda. I'm enjoying your videos and they're helping motivate me to get studying again. I used to love learning languages and dabbled in many but only really continued with three. I think I'd forgotten how much "grunge work" is involved in learning a language and I'm just going to have to buckle down and do it again. By the way, I was wondering if you are familiar with the Japanese kanji tests for Japanese, the 漢字検定? The books are great to study kanji with. www.kanken.or.jp/

    ? thanks 😊

    I don’t understand why some hate Kanji. I found it rather easy considering that most are ideographic and pictographic. I mean for example 大い (heavy) already looks like someone carrying two buckets of water hanging from a stick, which is carried around on the shoulder.

    Hey Lindie ^^ I was wondering how long you've been learning Japanese for and how long it took you to get to this stage. Also, could you do this kind of video but for korean? But one where we can see you writing? I find it hard to find handwritten korean material. I want to get my writing and reading better and I know that korean in the text books and hand written is quite different, so could you please show videos of you writing? (Is this a weird request? hahah) I absolutely love your videos and love you. You bring a sense of peace that I really enjoy. Love from Portugal

    a different language everyday or random selection each day, or a language a week etc?
    like what is a draft timetable you would use for a week or two lets say?
    i'm finding it hard to balance out Japanese, Korean, French and Mandarin xD
