Ironbridge Revisited - Chocolate box town

Ironbridge, a riverside village nestled in the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, England, is situated on the banks of the River Severn. It’s the birthplace of The Iron Bridge, a remarkable 100-foot cast iron bridge constructed in 1779.
Throughout the 19th century, Ironbridge welcomed many renowned visitors, including Benjamin Disraeli. However, by the mid-20th century, the settlements and industries within the gorge began to decline. Ironbridge’s fortunes changed in 1986 when it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing the wider Ironbridge Gorge area. Since then, it has become a prominent tourist destination within Shropshire.
Today, most industries in Ironbridge have shifted towards tourism. Notably, the Merrythought teddy bear company, established in 1930, continues to manufacture its beloved creations in Ironbridge and even has a small museum dedicated to its history. The heart of Ironbridge is a vibrant hub, featuring a post office, pharmacy, various pubs, cafes, and numerous small independent shops.
Ironbridge’s history took a dramatic turn on November 23, 1981, when it was struck by an F1/T2 tornado as part of a record-breaking nationwide tornado outbreak.
Throughout the year, Ironbridge hosts several annual events, including the Coracle Regatta in August, held on the River Severn. This regatta holds special significance as it commemorates the legacy of the coracle-making family of Rogers, who resided in Ironbridge for several generations.
