Thors Cave - Manifold Valley

Just outside the village of Wetton in the Staffordshire Peak District, you’ll find the awe-inspiring Thor’s Cave, a natural cavern nestled within a steep limestone crag. Its enormous arched entrance is easily visible and quite accessible from the footpath below.
Archaeological evidence suggests that Thor’s Cave has been inhabited by humans since the latter Stone Age, approximately 11,000 years ago. Evidence of human occupation continues into the Iron Age and Roman periods. Past excavations have unearthed stone tools, pottery, amber beads, and bronze items, as well as the burial sites of at least seven individuals.
Thor’s Cave attracts visitors, and the breathtaking views of the valley are a major draw. However, visitors should exercise extreme caution while exploring the cave due to the steep, unguarded drops from the entrances and the slippery surfaces.
For those interested in ancient history, a visit to Long Low, situated a mile southeast of Wetton, is highly recommended. Long Low is a unique Neolithic burial site consisting of two large round cairns connected together. It stands as the sole instance of its kind in England. Excavations conducted in the 19th century revealed a limestone burial chamber with a paved floor within, along with the remains of at least thirteen individuals and numerous arrowheads.
