  • I'm Melanie Williams, an Encaustic artist residing in the picturesque town of Bala, nestled in the heart of Wales and the Eryri National Park, previously known as Snowdonia. In my work, I use an array of tools, from the intense heat of blow torches and heat guns to delicate carving instruments whilst working with beeswax.
    My path as an artist has been one of self-discovery through endless experimentation. I layer encaustic medium and an array of pigments to produce a tapestry of intricate textures and vibrant colours. What fascinates me most is the versatility inherent in Encaustic painting, allowing me to adapt my techniques to best convey the image I seek to portray.
    However, my journey as an artist is deeply entwined with personal challenges. I face the daily battle of living with a rare and progressive disease known as Hypophosphatasia, or HPP. The warmth within my studio, serves as a sanctuary, offering respite from the constant pain I endure. Engaging in the creative process, in which time seems to stand still, provides me an escape and a profound source of peace.
    While my art has found its way into private collections across the globe and has graced the walls of local exhibitions and TV programs, I also extend my knowledge to others through occasional Encaustic workshops. My ability to host these workshops depends on my health, but I find great joy in guiding both beginners and those looking to hone their skills.
    Recently, I received news that my artwork will be featured in the upcoming December issue of the International Encaustic Artists magazine - Wax Fusion a platform that celebrates the fusion of wax and creativity in the world of art. I am hoping the video I am releasing along with this article will be a valuable resource for Encaustic painters seeking to gain an insight into my work. www.internatio...
    The reason I'm sharing my video free of charge goes beyond self-promotion. It's a heartfelt endeavour to give back and share the wealth of knowledge I've accumulated over the years. The sense of fulfilment I derive from this act is difficult to put into words.
    In conclusion, I am Melanie Williams, (Mel) an artist deeply connected to the natural world and passionate about Encaustic painting. My art not only captures the essence of the landscapes that inspire me but also serves as a source of healing and creativity. I look forward to continuing this artistic journey and sharing my love for this captivating art form with a wider audience.

    New to this, love your videos. Why did you choose the big torch to do your first fusing rather than the air gun? I currently have an air gun and a very small hand torch and I am looking into buying something bigger and the torch realm so I’m not having a refill so often.

      @@TheBelleBrighton my husband makes my frames. He makes a square of timber which is glued to the back of the painting. Then he screws through the backing board and mount to fix to the frame. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    Thank you for sharing. I love your work and I love seeing how other encaustic artists create. I am curious why you start with clear layers instead of straight away with colours? Is it personal preference or does it create a different type of effect?

    • @Melwilliamsart
      @Melwilliamsart  8 месяцев назад +1

      I begin with clear medium only because I feel it is a bit of a waste to add colour in the initial layers. Also by adding the layers it causes the paint to merge and flow in the way I like it to when hitting it with the blow torch - this is especially true for the sky. Thank you for enjoying my work. Best wishes Mel

    Good stuff. I too am in a lot of pain big time. I have a question how do you store the oil pigments? I keep mine in a bag some wrapped with cellophane or still in the tube? I know sometimes it’s hard to get out. Do I just put the in a box without anything on the tops? Also I love your pan on the hot plate. I know you live super far Have any idea where to find one. Thank you🌻

    • @Melwilliamsart
      @Melwilliamsart  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Lynn. Sorry to hear you are living with pain too.
      I keep the oil in the tubes and make sure the lids fit properly. The oils will set if you leave the lids off and be useless for making encaustic paint. The small pans I use are children’s play pans. Some are from IKEA if you have that store. The small ones are actually metal measuring cups. I’d love to see some of your work. All my best wishes. Mel

      Hi Angela. So glad you enjoyed watching the video. You will soon be hooked on encaustic painting - it gets in your blood! The original painting sold immediately but I can do something very similar. You can never recreate exactly with encaustic. Thank you so much.

    This was such a fascinating video to watch! Thank you for sharing your insight and process. Seeing your approach to landscape painting was incredibly helpful. I am curious, do you ever make your own black sticks by combining a combination of pigments instead of straight black from the tube? Again, this was terrific!

    • @Melwilliamsart
      @Melwilliamsart  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much. I am so glad the video was helpful. I tend to keep all the oddments of paint from the day. Mix it together and then add a bit of black oil paint or pigment. This means the paint isn’t pure black. I find the oil paint really gets into those nooks and crannies. It takes time to dry though. Best wishes. Mel ❤️
