He himself was not in the right mental headspace either and while what he did was obviously not the best of things, he was just trying to survive and make sure Feyra did not mentally break under the pressure. She needed an escape (she nearly became depressed at one point which is why *mild spoiler* Rhys needed to send her music in her cell at one point)
