This is really good research that you have done, good video thanks for sharing. In 1978 the USGP 500 at Carlsbad had Herbert Shmitz on a factory maico 450 magnum go 1st in moto #1 and 2nd in moto #2 and Heikki Mikkola 2&1 which gave him the overall win, I've tried to research this race and have run into nothing but a dead end ,but I'll never forget watching it on abc,s wide world of sports in 78 it was an absolute barn burner, maybe you could dig it up somewhere, by the way thanks for the link to twin shock in Germany, I ordered that awesome ignition cover, it cost me a 157.00$ and it will be here Tuesday the 3rd. I have 3 maicos and a BMW 1100 road bike, one of the most rare maicos a 1990 320. Thanks again and if you can see if you can find that race 🏁
1978 USGP 500 Carlsbad, Heikki Mikkola and Herbert Schmitzwere tied, but Mikkola won because of elapsed time by one minute. So Herbert Schmitz got 2nd place. What are you looking to find, the race itself? Or an article on it? There is a US 500CC Motorcross Grand Pix "Mikkola shows why he's world champion, Lackey breaks and Bell is first american" article about this race in the September 1978 issue of Cycle World.
Thank You very much for this video, and all of your past videos ! I’m happy to see you well. I once had a few Maicos, last year of the ‘square barrel’ 250, the 81 twin shock 490 (that I really miss), and an 82 490, that one was still stock but not running.

Unreal story! I’ve never heard about most of this… I’m I huge Maico fan, I’ve owned and raced a 1976 AW 250, a highly modified AW450, a 1979 400 and my favorite the 1982 Mega II 490. I can’t imagine a 760cc, I thought the 490 was a beast!
@@Keith-rk4td My dad had some super rats. I actually have a video where I ran into a few people who were Hodaka collectors and I rode with them. One of the bikes the clutch blew out and blew a hole through the cases.
If a Detroit deisel 2 stroke works with large bore and stroke than why did everyone think it impossible. No forced induction ? Is that why the bike was normally aspirated
@@waynegarfield6607 I dont know all the mechanics around it but even 500cc 2 stroke si difficult to achive. Suzuki gave up and yamaha had issues even. First the diesel engine runs on diesel.and is a very large engine. It has a glow plug and it caps at 750 rpm. So to make a smaller versiom thats usable on a bike with thr normal 2 stroke fluid mechanics are likely around where the difficulty becomes. He was able to gear this bike like a street bike where 1st was like 3rd. Im sure theres some more in depth.details about small engine 2 strokes and the difficulty as they grow larger in displacement but I have not looked in detail. Maybe sometime Ill take a closer look.
@@waynegarfield6607 I will say you have friction and the ability to move that slug as they get bigger. Theres also being able to start the bike out on the trail.
@@waynegarfield6607 I would also say that likely the strokes end up being longer. This bike had (bore x strokr) 109mm x 83mm. The early lanz bulldogs had 150 x 210mm and these vary later modles had 8.8 inch x 10.x inch. The stroke is longer than the bore and rpms low.
actualy they are overrated and this is how legends are born. Maico manufctured good bikes for the 1960s and 1970s and peaked with the 1981 490, but even regional competition was usualy won by other brands.
