- The Tale Of Two Watches! I have two identical Avia watches here for restoration. Or do I ?
Some interesting differenced between the two. In this video (Part 1) I will examine both watches and disassemble for cleaning.
I have decided to break this into two videos so you the viewer can see all the detail. There is a surprise in store at the end of part one so you will want to watch the whole episode to find out.
Part two, if watching as this one goes out will be in around a weeks time (still not started work on the rebuild)

Glad to see 👀 ya do another GREAT 👍 watch ⌚ video 📹. I like 👍 the gold colored, precision gears ⚙, which are inside of a lot of these watches ⌚. I see 👀 that these are identical, but do not 👎 have a day/date 📅 feature. Both watches also don't have bands. The sweep second hand ✋ is separate, and at the bottom of the dial, at the 6 o'clock position. I've had a few Westclox Scotty dollar 💵 pocket watches ⌚ with the same feature. I see 👀 that the gears ⚙ are silver colored in these, but both are still a symbol of high 👡 quality. Looks like 👍 the other parts of the movement besides the gears ⚙ is gold colored. I've also seen 👀 Avia shoes 👞, but both companies are entirely separate ones. ALL watches ⌚ like 👍 these, are true works of art. Just, ALWAYS remember to power down the mainspring before disassembly. Please keep 👌 me posted 📫 on ALL GREAT watches ⌚!! Your friend, Jeff.
Keep the cleaning montages please. Seeing how the parts are laid out for cleaning is just as interesting as the teardown & rebuild.
Thank you Simon. Montages are going nowhere now!
Your tutorial is the perfect place to start for an aspirant novice.
Thank you. Good luck
I like the cleaning montages and the great fiddle music at the 30:00 mark.
Avia purchased the remnants of Waltham in the 70s, I believe, and France Ébauches appears to have made those SGT movements for Waltham. So it stands to reason Waltham may have had a few laying about the shop when they went belly up, and Avia probably decided waste not want not. The P320 is a Peseux, which is of course now part of ETA.
Thank you for your insight sir. I am happy to learn a few things about these watches in the comments.
I love watching the watch restoration videos and would really like to see more. I especially enjoy seeing 1960’s and 1970’s watches being restored
“Watch till the end” ... I see what you did there ;) Bravo!
So it was you that made the winning bid for those avias!!!
I have had these well over 4-5 months now. One was bought on its own and the other in a job lot. I do see them come up on ebay here in the UK quite often.
A pair of beautiful watches
Nice work Mike ! I'm in watchmaking for 5 months now and you're one of the guys on you tube who me bring me there, so thank you !
Thank you very much. If my videos are inspiring people into the hobby then I am very satisfied.
Normally I'd say, Interesting, but in this case, Doubley Interesting.
The block lettered logo came in during the 50's as before them it was a scrollwork logo as seen on mine in my vids which has been dated as a '47 as the "bow tie" or BMW prop dial didn't make it into the 50s that mine has as they went with more clean dials like yours with the baroque numerals. I absolutely love the brand, really well made, even my Avia Mariner quartz is superbly made with a swiss quartz movement.
The golden movement is a French made FE 233(France Ébauche) which takes its roots from the cupillard 233 from the late 40s, it was mass-produce before The quartz-crisis, The other one is a Peseux 320, also French made , it’s heavily inspired by the fe it ran short because of the quartz crisis , love your vids!
Thank you. Other commenters have said one of these was linked to the Swiss Waltham ?
@@MyRetroWatchesSwiss Waltham did work with FE by housing there FE233 I found a blog that talks about it that I think you could be interested in: www.watchuseek.com/threads/waltham-swiss-or-french-take-your-pick.2559642/ , they’ve also used the FE140, this movement is a real treat and have a very interesting layout, also French made, you can find a few Swiss Waltham with FE movement on eBay
Glad to see the case knife works well for you. Looking g forward to see how these turn out
Thanks again for that, really appreciated it.
Great looking pieces.
I think they're both awesome.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos!
Thank you so much for the video! It’s inspiring me to rebuild my grandfather’s watch of a similar ilk
Go for it!
Love your videos... I can’t wait to see the next... cheers!
Excellent watch Mike👌👍
Thanks 👍
come on part 2 - can't wait !
Went live today sir.
@@MyRetroWatches Good man !
I love watching restorations like this before sleep, so relaxing
Great video Mike. I love the movements on those watches.
Excellent as always. Looking for the part 2.
Amazing how two watches look identical, but house what appears to be different movements, "great video Mike!, keep it up".
Thanks for watching! I think they are from different decades. there is a slight difference on the number 6 also.
Great work
Lovely pair these two watches. Keep going. Congrats for reaching 25k!
Bloody awesome. Subscribed
Love the design of the numbers on the faces!
Love your videos, and love the montages. Please keep doing them! All the best, Harlan
Ohhh liking where this one is going! Stay safe buddy
enjoyed this part one as always, thanks for sharing, looking forward to part 2
Glad you enjoyed it part two has just gone live today
Thanks for the video Mike, always well made and we appreciate them a lot. 👍
I appreciate that! It takes me 3x as long to edit the video than it does to film! I think I am getting better at editing now but its a very slow process.
Great Video!! Keep up the good work!!
..definitely back on track with Mike!! Is always good for me to see your very well done videos where I also go getting familiar with different movements.
Very nice looking watches and what to say of the movements --beautiful too. . . . looking forward to see reassembly and timegrapher episode soon!
Great video ! I followed your channel with interest and I learned something interesting every time and compare with my own experience as a hobbyist watchmaker.
Just love watching your videos, very interesting and relaxing. 👏👍😀
Thanks
Wow great video
Thanks heaps!!!
Thanks for the 2 for 1 start. can't wait to see the reassembly. Been enjoying your Videos for some time now. Thank-you so much.
Thanks for watching! appreciate this comment. Love the name BTW my full name is Michael Bolton (really!)
Just finished my 6309-6100 project with help from your vids. Thank you so much for all the detailed videos! These Swiss handwinding movements look so much more beautiful though, my next project will probably be something similar to this!
Well done on your 6309, they are still great workhorse movements. may not have the nice finish as some of these Swiss movements but the 70s Seikos are bulletproof and so reliable.
Love your vids no matter how long they may be including the cleaning montoge
Really enjoyed part one - so, many thanks. Looking forward to see how these turn out as I'm a bit of a fan of Avia watches - they reflect that a sort of mid-market quality of the 60s when it was all about the utilitarian timekeeping, and not so much the 'name' on the dial.
Thank you . Happy to read in the comment this video is being well received. It seems in the 60s there were so many watch companies making similar looking watches. Great for us hobbyists.
Keep up the good work! I’m learning a lot of interesting things about watch repairs from your channel!
Awesome, thank you!
Well done Mike, two at a time!!!. Beautiful watches though. Adrian
Wonderful vintage watches Michael, looking forward to seeing them both up and running.
Thanks
Beautiful dial and proportions. Looking forward to see the final result!
Thank you very much!
Never tire of the cleaning montage & congrats on the 25k+ 👍
Yes! Thank you!
Nice work, I watch it with atmiration.
I started work a month ago on a suspiciously similar movement which must have been a forerunner to the older of these two movements. The model is a Cupillard 233-60 which became the FE233-60 and there is hardly anything on the internet, at least video wise, so I had to reassemble it from the parts/oiling charts.
SGT 233-68-71 is a Swiss Waltham movement.
Another awesome vid
Glad you enjoyed it
Enjoy your channel and actually like these watches, Was never one for those High End types, and winning one of these would be right up my alley as to the type I like, A Nice Looking watch, not over-stated and does what it was made to do, and does it well. Cheers Stay Healthy Stay Safe
Two classy and beautiful looking watches, I hope you can bring them back to life...👍
I will try my best. Gut feeling is they will live again.
I like your videos because you do a good job and you are still learning so am I and I can relate to that keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍
Love your channel
Thank you. Always appreciated.
Kind of a surprise to open both of them and find that they completely different movements. The whiter dial, my guess would some sort of enamel. Great video as always. Got to see your aliexpress winder working in the background of the cleaning montage.👍
Excellent ... can’t wait for part two. PS Keep cleaning.
Thanks will do!
Another enjoyable video, please keep the cleaning montage. I like the choice of music too. looking forgard to part 2
Thanks, will do!
Good one mike I have two identical watches like that. Name is enicar. Look just like yours from 60,s
Enicar are very nice indeed!
Congrats on 25k.
Nice choice of music.
thanks for that. Good to know.
Great video Mike, I can hardly wait for that jiffy bag to land on my doormat !
Congrats for reaching 26K now ;) Lovely watches ;)
thanks for your support. With a bit of luck I will be both going again!
I was shouting out "your missing a screw" cringing as you was tugging at that setting leaver spring lol. Nice to see a double bubble of watch restore action. Cheers.
haha. because of the way I film I cant be eyes on completely and do miss stuff. equally I thought it was the same as the other movement.
Very classy dress watches, you gotta love those simple movements....⌚👍
Thanks. At first glance they look the same, clearly there is a few differences. A popular model no doubt .
I just joined the FB group. Thanks for that
Welcome aboard!
I like the cleaning montages well enough. But if you filmed them a bit differently each time, to show a different aspect of cleaning, that would help those us us who use your videos as tips and tutorials. For example a montage, but of you hand cleaning stubborn gunk, or of you inspecting jewels and gears, or of your drying procedures. That sort of thing, too boring to spend time on, but new and different and useful. Thanks for your fun and informative videos, I never miss one.
I will give it some thought. the montage as it is is usually near on an hour of footage that I shrink down to 3 minutes. I have done cleaning videos before so perhaps I will try to do an updated one in the future.
You have got me interested in watches, with these great videos! I wonder if you have been responsible for launching more people in this watch repair world. I wouldn't be surprised. Thank you for sharing this.
I have no time to watch the video right now, but I0ve given the like already because I know the quality of your work Mike. Best regards.
Thank you sir!
Oh! Cupillard 233-68, (aka FE 233-68), I'm working on one of these at the moment. :)
Didn't realise you were a fellow Lefty, Michael. This is why we get on haha!
Haha yes. All the best people are left handed.
👍
Music ok so was a nice washing
Thank you! I try to pick new music each time but I have to be careful with copyright.
No expert by any means but the bigger balance I think might give a more accurate output on that movement as opposed to the smaller balanced one. Enjoyed watching. Thanks Mike.
Société des Garde-Temps SA (SGT) was a federation of Swiss watch manufacturers active in the 1970s.
SGT abreveation for Seargant in the military. Mick 👍🇬🇧
These are obvious Swiss Geneva pieces... I need holders after 25 years. Mainly be on the clocks but the watch man is coming back again.. thanks mike. I know you call yourself novice at time. Good tools insight and focus.. putting in a jewell the other day mainplate balance. So tiny.. it's in now.
Cornavin watch type on the silver one...?
What do you use for a matte for working on mate?
I have this exact same watch it was given to me by my then girlfriend for my 21st birthday in 1970 the original crown on these watches was very small and it had an MBostA on it I had it replaced with a larger crown when I had it first serviced it has been serviced again since and is still running well and I still where it sometimes wear it.
Which dial do you have the flat colour one or the starbust type? I am assuming right now that my two are from different decades and as we can age yours to late 60s / 1970 then it gives me something to go at.
I have done similar watches before and yes the small crowns whilst look nice make hard work of the winding function.
@@MyRetroWatches Mine is the starburst style glad to help
Nice job twice, the one dial graphics are shrunk in relation to the other (like setting the photo copier to 95%) best notable if looking at the 6.
Hi Mike, Great video, as always! Love the cleaning segment. Looking forward to the next one. Where’s the music from?
I get my music from RUclips Audio Library. They have a huge selection of royality free music. This way I dont get any content claims .
Avia by the way if memory serves me right are now HQ'd in Redhill in Surrey so still about I believe.
Thanks Ian.
Where did you get the wall mounted watch winder? very cool.
AliExpress £20
They are also on eBay
Sgt 200 movement £8
Peseux Caliber Number 320 Movement Type Mechanical, manual-wind Vibrations Per Hour 18000 bph, 4Hz Jewels 17 Power Reserve 47 hours ...
Thanks for this Mark appreciate this information and in your other comment on the SGT movement.
Love your vids!!! I found a very old Ernest Borel automatic that still runs well. Unfortunately it does not have a winding stem or crown. How would I go about sourcing the missing items?
You need to find the movement number first often near or under the balance. You can then look on ebay or Cousinsuk.com to find a stem. Crowns you can pick up easily once you know the stem thread diameter.
The "P" stands for Peseux.
I think, this is Lorsa 238...I mean first one, and second pure Peseux :-) Movement in watches of ex. Yugoslavia Darwil and Arreta :-) I have all two models ...
Thank you for your insight.
Hi there, do you know where I can get a new glass for an old Avia watch, I am wanting to wear my grandads old Avia watch for my wedding but the glass is damaged.
Great informative video
Take it to a watch repairer. Most towns have one. You first have to remove the old . See what sort it is, measure and then order a replacement.
A competent shop can perform this task easily enough
17.3 mm is the old Imperial measurement of 11/16 inch.
I should know this too... I work in engineering.
Like the watchwinder. DIY or did you buy it somewhere?
AliExpress for £20 !
@@MyRetroWatches Hahaha cool!
I've got one of these in very good condition and keeping good time. it also has an expandable gold plated bracelet. What's it worth today?
Value is hard to say . I’d say £50-70
that is proper man watches
The first one is a very nice version of the Cullipard 233-68 - most of the ones I've encountered weren't nearly as well finished.
www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&&2uswk&Cupillard_233_68
The second is a variant of the Peseux 320
www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&&2uswk&Peseux_320
I'll be interested to see which of the two keeps better time. My money is on the Peseux.
Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to part two.
Thanks for the links. Hopefully we will find out soon.
I have the one on the left and mine also has the top of the number 6 chopped off by the minute circle. Finding it hard to get the back off. Someone may have superglued it.
I hope not. They do get stuck sometimes if you have a good quality case knife like the Bergeon one it makes all the difference
I would like to ask you if it is worth to buy a Timegrapher even if i cannot service a watch propperly.
Many thanks.
If you have automatic or manual wind watches in a collection then it’s good to have one to check their health and if they need a service. There are apps that can do this on mobile , I don’t rate them but only because I could not use them when working on a watch. To check one for the sake of checking is okay.
@@MyRetroWatches , many thanks for the advice. I really appreciate your ansewer.
Those apps unfortunately are not very precise.
I would definitely buy a timegrapher.
Best regards.
During the time lapse cleaning I was waiting for the watches to fly off the winder!
Next time! fortunately at normal speed its quite slow. Its a new bit of kit for me that I bought off AliExpress for £20.00 and to be honest is really good for that price. The Bergeon one is something like £600
@@MyRetroWatches I love "fine" tools and machines, but sometimes a tool that will do the job is all we need.
i have a channel about watches to.
