Thanks to this video I was able to repair my Bullhead. the crown with the shaft fell out and couldn't be put back in. I disassembled the movement, cleaned and oiled it. The clock now runs at -3 seconds per day. I'm really proud to have done all this myself and will now do the same with my Pogue. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Well done! You will find that the 6139 movement is very similar, almost the same in fact so you should not have too many issues.

What did you find out that we did wrong when we pulled the combined crown & stem ?
Awesome vid. I have a 1976 6138 John Player Special in the formula one livery colors. Got it on eBay 15 years ago because the crystal kept popping out and the owner didn’t know how it where to get it fixed. My watchmaker sealed it up and put in the correct crystal. I love the watch and always get questions about it. Enjoy the Bill head!!

This was a white knuckle / high "pucker factor" video just to watch!! Real suspense and you did a magnificent job keeping calm. When you flipped it over I thought: "And now the EASY side??" Bravo!
You're not an amateur!. If there is anyone out there who can claim to have never made some silly mistake with this hobby, they're a liar!.

I have two old Seiko's based off the 7A38- 7070 I think that's the movement!

Bought mine about 2 weeks ago, only mine is in a bit a better shape.....😀 hat off for you diving into this mvt, pretty complex and a LOT of parts.....the central seconds hand of mine needs to be readjusted as it stops at 1 sec to 12 when stopping the chrono...can be the pipe of the hand as this is the famous D shape...will see what to do. Nice video! I picked up a Bullhead at a thrift shop in Australia for AU$3 last year!
Still works, just needs a service, new seals for the chrono buttons and a new crystal ad it’s heavily scratched.
As much as I would love to attempt doing this myself I think I’ll have to get a pro to do it judging by this video, plus I don’t have any experience.

Very different chronograph movement from Swiss chronographs modules! very interesting!
Very! But Seiko do have some good engineering. It’s all about the chronograph wheel as it has a vertical clutch built in which does simplify things.
Really interesting that Mike, can't wait for part 2, chronograph is something i need to try, they look a bit complicated but would love to sevice one, will sooner or later, thanks Mike great vid as usual.
Thanks. I do have a watch review coming next week that is a very affordable chrono which is why I chose to do it as for many of us it’s also a cheap way to get one and possibly take it apart.

I am going to watch this whilst getting my very rare Slava tank auto ready to receive its new movement, its a very special limited run of 1500 made and I found a chap in Germany who has a huge stock of the auto movements brand new, also ordered another two to put two other tanks back on the road :P 35 euros incl delivery I cannot complain :D
Seiko is really one of the greats so long as watchmaking is concerned. Pioneered quartz technology after the CEH was too slow to move forward with the Beta 1/2 and was one of the only bright spots of the immediate post-WWII Japan's economy. It tells of a nation ascending as an industrial power in a way only post-war Soviet watches can match (which I also just adore). I highly recommend everyone to get at least one to add to their collection, but I'll just settle with a few bare NH35s bought for cheap to practice on. Great work on this Bullhead so far! Will eagerly await Part II.
Yes I love Seiko , all in-house , I think they make every single component. Real shame the 6139 does not get the title of worlds first automatic chrono and I was only lost by a month or so.
They have been a good brand although I am not up to speed on the new models.
Impressive movement. I work on electronics myself; always with a manual or at least a schematic. I can not imagine how some people are capapble of assembling such a complex thing without the proper documentation. Can't wait to see the next video.
I do have a service manual but for the movement side I am familiar with it so no need but the the chrono hour complication I will need all the help I can get!

I kept having to remind myself to breath a few times because having a part hit terminal velocity is nerve wracking. When I got started in this I began to wonder if I had miniature black holes surrounding my bench because parts would simply disappear. I became intimately familiar with the floor of my shop on more occasions than I am willing to publically admit to.
I can't wait for the rebuild video of this one.
This is why I have a big magnet on my floor and my bench is on a black rubber mat. I don’t have many ping moments anymore but when they do happen I can usually find the part with the magnet!
When I watched this the first time my brain diagnosed the symptoms you described and I was fearing the worst, the chronograph wheel. Looking at the fabric wrapped around the chronograph wheel I sighed relief. I think that's what the problem was. Usually when its weak around the 58th second there's things to look out for. I think they call it weak but I think its going to be fine. Awesome!!! Youre going to have another grail. One more thing.. that pause just after you opened it showing us how nervous you were. Trust me, we all would feel the same.
Thanks. To be fair the movement side is exactly the same as a 6139 and I’ve done so many of these it does not phase me at all. It’s just the hour chrono part on the dial side. Only a few components but I’m guessing there is a method on the placement to get it right .

The dirt in that movement!...good news in a way, it's probably the reason why it stops and there won't be any faulty/damaged parts 👍

Mike, huge congratulations on getting the Seiko bull-head. I have the Citizen with silver dial, black subdials and same layout as your. My wife calls it hungry Panda (mouth open) and they are a real treat to wear. Enjoy!

Later on and that was a great video. Loved the new camera work. It looks like that movement may have never been serviced before. I've noticed loose screws in watches I've suspected to have had little or no service too.

Hi Mike once those date wheels came off that was it for me. This is the point I'd start to panic. I think I'd leave jobs like this to guys like you who can remember where everything goes. And those keyless works🤦♂️ my god!! I can't remember what I'd just gone into the kitchen for so God help me trying to do this. Looking forward to seeing the rebuild

Thanks. The keyless look complicated but it will only go back one way and in reality it’s only 5-6 parts. Seiko usually follow logic and it’s why I like them.
The greasing & oiling I think will be more of the challenge.
I've been looking forward to this ever since you showed the Bullhead in amongst a pile of watches you had to work on that'd be coming-up on the channel.

Great video Mike. I've got a 6138-0017 & it had the same issue with it stopping when the chronograph is running. When it was serviced the watchmaker found that the minute recorder wheel had come loose from its pinion & he pressed it back on. He also found that the main spring from an ETA 2892-2 is a very similar size to the one used in this movement so fitted one during the service as the original was in poor condition. The part number is GR25341X in case this is of interest to you. It only cost £12 to replace.

Wow, Mike, I wouldn't know where to start. It looks like a complex assembly job, and I wouldn't even attempt such a project. I look forward to the re assembly with a little trepidation, though I am sure you will do a great job as ever. On a side note, I received my T shirt earlier this week and it has created a few comments from my close friends. Also a few laughs along the way. They really have no idea what we go through and how much time is involved simply looking for springs and other small items which seem lost for ever, only to be found hours or even days later, Arrrgh.

A very brave & challenging undertaking Mike ,all i kept thinking was how complex it looked even if you are familiar with the base movement ,look forward to the rebuild . As for the lack of cleaning montage i may have to consult my lawyers 😉.
Haha the montage would be longer than the video! I think 2-3 rounds in the cleaning machine plus some time in the ultrasonic too
Hi Mike, Here's a suggestion on the video series, part 1 disassembly, part 2 cleaning progress, part 3 assembly. From your assessment of the dirty parts, you are right on needing a few go arounds in the cleaning machine. Was that rust on the hair spring or just dried gunck? Great job so far. Really anticipating the scope review.
Cleaning has already begun . I didn’t feel there was value in filming it as it’s a combination of ultrasonic and then cleaning machines.
I am thinking it will be many cycles.
The hairspring is just serious gunk .

I've no I deal as to what the Chronograph wheel actually
does and it's hard to imagine what the back end with that
spring arm could be doing. Maybe you could explain the
functionality in the next video?
So many loose screws are usually caused by exposure
to extreme and constant vibration. Maybe the original
owner operated a Jackhammer for a living?
That would also account for the worn bezel, if it was
continuously rubbing against a rough overall sleeve.
I used to be involved with the testing of certain products
for the MOD and vibration testing could literally unscrew a
threaded bolt until it fell out.

Haha. That’s a list. I think it’s more likely someone has been in the watch , either put it back together in a rush to sell or harvest / swap parts from. I’d like to think it’s loose from extreme ownership but in reality I don’t think that is the case.

I think it’s just been cobbled together from parts. Possibly sat with the caseback off for a few years
As a kid I used to take things apart (mostly lawnmowers and car engines) but nothing with this many parts and this level of precision. My hat is off to you sir. (Would love to see how you store/place the parts you take out)
Right at the end of the video I show the yellow circular tray I use for storage.
I just take photos of it before cleaning so I know which screws are for what.

Really well done. Seiko and other brands started using plastic in their movements for a few reasons. Cheaper and those parts don’t need to be lubricated like metal. If memory serves, I think my Omega Cosmic 2000 also has a few plastic pieces.
Problem is plastic can fail over the decades or if the watch hands stop owners try to wind harder which usually breaks the teeth of these gears. The same plastic gear is in many Seikos of the 70s.

Good video Mike, I saw the Bullhead photo come up on my recommended videos and watched it straight away. I have 3 6138 seiko that I purchased around 2006, luckily they all run and chrono functions work fine. I need to change the face and hands on my bullhead as they are too aged and faded, i have the items, just waiting for some spare time to jump in the back. I noticed your lighting was a bit flat and didn't show much depth in the watch works. Maybe a small bright light may add shadow and depth. Just a tip, as I'm sure you watch them back to relocate parts too. Keep up the great realistic work.
Thank you for watching. Good feedback too. I really struggle with lighting I either have too much or not enough ! I record everything on an iPhone 12 Pro so I have room to work under. This also presents problems as I want much closer shots in 2k but can’t seem to get the camera where I need it.
Very nice watch. The Bullhead button arrangement is a lot better for anyone planning to use the chronograph to time things.
Hi! just to let you know that by precaution, as you are an amateur like me, use rodico as much as you can to pick parts up. everytime you slip with your tweezers i lose 1 year of life. believe me, i get hurt as much as the part itself. older the movement the more precaution we get. it very hard to find parts sometimes for vintage watches so we should always take more precautions. even to pick screws up. if one flies off, you'll cry. so be safe. the watch deserves some extra attention. cheers
Wise words indeed thanks. I do go for the Rodico more and more but I also have a good feel from my tweezers but I forget on film that I have a stronger pair for when I need more grip.
Flying parts fortunately does not happen all that often now but I do keep a really big magnet near by which 95% of the time finds what I have lost.

Would you be polishing up the viewable parts from below and fitting an exhibition caseback? I reckon maybe some detailing to the rotor, gilding the inset lettering and making it shine would seriously set this up as being a work of art, in my opinion of course. I bought a complete Seiko diver case with sapphire crystal, screw down crown and a metal pepsi bezel insert that I am putting my modded 7019 into, that's got a display caseback and I have some gold and copper leaf here and want to really pimp up the viewable bits with some detailing.
Maybe it was like really really cold when they pot those screws in? And your room is warm?
May take a bit of study, but you’ll get it done.
I am interested to see if the mechanical chrono side of my VK63 meca-quartz is similar in layout as Seiko used one of its mechanical chrono works to power the VK63 but the power take off was replaced with the quartz power plant off of one of the analogue Seiko movements hybrid'ing it into one movement as opposed to Seiko's quartz chrono's which are regulated and controlled from the IC to individual stepper and coil's for each chrono sub dial.

We will see. The 8110 movement is a 3 layer sandwich as I have that movement here. I do want the watch but again since Once upon a time in Hollywood movie the prices have shot up
Mile, when I stopped the video at 44:34 I noticed something odd on the 11 o'clock position of that wheel. It looks one ot the teeth is rather triangular shaped and stained. I hope that is just an illusion by the camera..
Hard to say, I have inspected again and I can’t see an issue. Hopefully the rebuild video will have a section back on the scope so I will try to make a point of showing this wheel again.

No they don’t have that. Nor the Seiko 6139 chrono either. Ironically it’s better to keep these vertical clutch chronos running as it’s less west on parts. Theory is when the clutch is engaged to stop the second hand it’s putting strain on the chronograph wheel.
Well, fingerprints aside, someone removed the floating 30 minute recorder, so yes, buggered with by an amateur (not referring to you) of course. Lose screws, same reason, not from use.
Plastic parts do have a function, for example in the 861 Omega movement. This due to the self lubricating ability of plastics. The down side is the longevity of the early plastics causes shrinkage and cracking. For example the 70’s dual time zone watches. Great work as usual! Cheers.

I understand the self lubrication of plastic, I have an autolub movement in my collection!

@@MyRetroWatches don’t underestimate your skill level, been watching for awhile and you are good ;-). Slow and easy. Lots of pictures and of course you now have an assembly video. Just play it backwards!
Typical scenario:
Someone got into it, maybe a watchmaker, then decided, not worth it, and suggested the owner go out and by a quartz chronograph for the same price as repairing it would be. Then put it back together without caring so he could hand it back.
Bet you any money that is what happened. My dad purchased a Universal DATO COMPAX in 1946 when joined the airforce. After many years he took it to a watch repairer for a cleaning and service. Was told, toss it and get a newer one that does …. Dad did buy a new watch but did not throw the DATO out. I totally restored it, case, movement and dial in 1996 and gave it back to him.

I kept waiting for you to say something about the balance...it's running out quite a bit. Not sure from the video what axis, but it's definitely got something going on.
To be honest I didn’t really take much notice of the balance. Too busy with disassembly. I will have to look back at the footage. Hairspring looked okay on the scope.

I have a 1982 seiko quartz sport 100. It was the first 7A28 movement, so I’m told. It’s in good shape with only modest exterior wear. The issue is it hasn’t been serviced in many years. I’d like to get it running again to wear it for sentimental reasons. What would it cost to get it back up to speed? It is a historic watch and definitely had an impact on the watch industry. Please let me know your thoughts.

for me this watch has been kept in something that was vibrating very hard. like in a drawer of a boat or something like that. that could explain the loose screws. could even explain why the small subdial hand was gone. could even explain the heavy scratching of the bezel. fisherman boat?

I have never needed to time anything but chronos look good, bullheads do have a little weight but that's good character for a watch in my opinion. I wonder how much 4 of these new old stock are worth?
Michael bullheads in good condition go for proper money . I paid very little for this from a friend who took pity on me! That being said he also set me a monumental challenge!

Could ya tell me the name of the shirt that you’re wearing? I like the calendar disc look on the front. That is an absolute favorite watch, the dial being a root beer 🍺 color. I see that the day/date feature is at the 6 o’clock position. It looks like 👍 the day is displayed in either Japanese, or Chinese. That may take some time getting used to, but it’s interesting. Ho cada año suben y suben esto es debido a que los coleccionistas los acaparan y es ocvion comtra menos unidades hay en venta más sube su valor no obstante son una buena inversión y más si eres coleccionista es un ejemplo más de Seiko aunque en principio un dato curioso besvwue los primeros cronos eran solo para mercado japonés y uno costaba un pastón venía a valer lo mismo que un coche medio japonés otro dato es que el bullhear es de los que menos tiempo estuvo en producción solo hay dos colores marrón y negro y otra ref más también marrón en el que cambia el color de la saeta segundero crono por dorada los ejemplares azules es una modificación o sea no es sulla la esfera un purista buscará una pieza original aunque tenga patina y a ser posible son pulir esa es otra para pulir estos Seiko y otros tienes que tener mucha espereriencia por la cantidad de cantos que tiene la caja si te lo pile alguien que no conozca la normativa de cajas de Seiko no dejan un ángulo del reloj sin trabajar es muy fácil que te hagan una chapuza y se coman un angulo

This 6138 has broken parts and issued that I am trying to resolve and source. Could be another few months yet.
There are other videos from vintage time Australia on this movement if you can’t wait .
